Hydatid cysts of central nervous system are rare and comprise only 2% to 3% of all hydatid cysts reported. Orbital localization is very uncommon and has been reported less than 1 % of all hydatid diseases. The primary treatment of hydatid disease is surgical. The most important complication of the surgical treatment is secondary hydatidosis due to spillage of the cyst contents. Because of the difficulties of the orbital localization, total extirpation of the cysts without rupture is almost impossible. Preventing spontaneous rupture of the cysts during surgery and postoperative antihelmintic treatment should be taken into consideration in these cases.This study includes four cases who underwent surgery for orbital hydatid cysts. Radiological characteristics, operative technique and postoperative medical therapy are discussed.  相似文献

Objective: To investigate whether pentoxifylline could play a role in attenuation of the hazardous effects of ischemia/reperfusion on corporeal tissue in a rat model of veno-occlusive priapism (VOP). Materials and methods: Placebo and pentoxifylline were given to eight groups of rats prior to priapism being induced by a vacuum constrictive device for durations of 6 and 12 h, respectively. Half of the groups of rats that underwent the same duration of priapism (ischemic) were subjected to 1 h of detumescence after band removal (reperfusion). One group underwent no manipulation and no drug administration and served as a baseline determination (control). Corporeal homogenates were examined for lipid peroxidation (LP) derived malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulation via thiobarbituric acid assay. Results: MDA concentration differed significantly between VOP rats and controls (P < 0.001) but did not differ significantly between ischemic-only groups and reperfused groups (P > 0.05). In the pentoxifyllinepretreated groups, although MDA accumulation tended to be slightly lower than in the placebo groups, the difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05) either in the 6- or 12-h duration priapic groups. Conclusions: LP, an indicator of radical oxygen metabolite (ROM) induced injury, occurs in rat corporeal tissue during and after abolishment of VOP. Single-dose pentoxifylline pretreatment failed to exert a protective effect on corporeal tissue in a rat model of VOP in terms of attenuation of LP.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the possible effects of ellagic acid in brain and sciatic nerve tissues of diabetic rats. Also, the impact of ellagic acid on catalase and paraoxonase (PON-1) activities, total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO) were examined. The rats were randomly divided into four groups, with eight rats each: Normal controls (not diabetic), only ellagic acid treated (ellagic acid controls, not diabetic), Diabetic controls (streptozotocin, diabetic), ellagic acid-treated diabetic (streptozotocin?+?ellagic acid). After a 4?week experiment, rats were sacrificed, and biomarkers for oxidative stress in the brain and sciatic nerve tissues of the rats were measured. There was significant depletion in the PON-1, catalase, and TAS levels in the brain and sciatic nerve tissues compared to the control groups (for both parameters, p?<?0.05). The values of catalase, PON-1 and TAS reversed back to normal levels in ellagic acid-treated diabetic rats compared to untreated diabetic rats (for both parameters, p?<?0.05). The levels of MDA, TOS, NO and, OSI in the brain and sciatic nerve tissues were higher in untreated diabetic rats compared to control group (for both parameters p?<?0.05). However, MDA, TOS, OSI, and NO levels were found to be significantly reduced in the ellagic acid-treated diabetic group compared to the untreated diabetic group in these tissues (for both parameters, p?<?0.05). In conclusion, the results of the present study suggested that ellagic acid exhibits neuroprotective effects against oxidative damage in diabetic rats.  相似文献

A unique case of bilateral severe carpal tunnel syndrome due to familial Mediterranean fever is reported. The syndrome was diagnosed by clinical examination and electrophysiological studies. Bilateral transverse carpal ligaments were released and the biopsy specimens revealed systemic type A amyloidosis. Up to our knowledge, the co-existence of bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome and familial Mediterranean fever has not been reported previously in the literature.  相似文献

In neurosurgery, ceftriaxone is a widely used, third generation cephalosporin for the treatment of CNS infections and perioperational prophylaxis. Recent studies have demonstrated that ceftriaxone induces reversible precipitates in the gallbladder. This complication is referred to as "biliary pseudolithiasis", and it has symptoms similar to the raised intracranial pressure (ICP) symptoms of the perioperative period. Symptomatic biliary pseudolithiasis should be kept in mind in all pediatric neurosurgery cases under ceftriaxone therapy in order to prevent unnecessary postoperative investigations and surgery.  相似文献

Latent autoimmune diabetes mellitus in adults (LADA) is characterized by clinical presentation as type 2 diabetes mellitus after 25 years of age, initial control achieved with oral hypoglycemic agents for at least 6 months, presence of autoantibodies and some immunogenetic features of type 1 diabetes mellitus. An 8.3 year-old girl was referred to our pediatric endocrinology department because of incidental glucosuria. She did not complain of polyuria, polydipsia, or weight loss. Her body mass index (BMI) was at the 80th percentile. Fasting glucose was 126 mg/dl, and OGTT glucose level at 120 min was 307 mg/dl. Although C-peptide levels were normal, her first phase insulin response (FIR) was lower than the 1st percentile. Anti-insulin antibody (AIA), islet cell antibody (ICA), and anti-glutamic acid decarboxylase (antiGAD) were negative. According to the clinical and laboratory findings, she was diagnosed as having type 2 diabetes mellitus. She was started with oral anti-diabetic treatment for a period of 1 year. Insulin had to be initiated for worsening of HbA1c levels. In the fourth year of follow-up, she was admitted to our hospital with diabetic ketoacidosis although she was on an intensive insulin regimen. At this time, C-peptide levels were low, antiGAD and AIA were positive with HLA DR3/DQ2 haplotype. In addition, her thyroid peroxidase antibody and endomysium antibody were found to be high at follow-up. Small intestinal biopsy revealed celiac disease. This patient may represent the first case of latent autoimmune diabetes mellitus in children (LADC) with autoimmune thyroiditis and celiac disease.  相似文献

Spinal cord dissemination over 10 years after surgical removal of the fourth ventricle ependymoma without local recurrence is extremely rare. A 49-year-old male underwent a macroscopically gross total removal of the fourth ventricle ependymoma and postoperative radiotherapy to the posterior fossa. Twelve years after the initial operation, the patient complained from uncontrolled fever attacks, low back pain and numbness of the legs. Spinal Magnetic Resonance Imaging revealed intradural extramedullary mass lesions located at the thoracic 2-3 and lumbar 5 vertebrae levels. Cerebrospinal fluid examination showed no tumour cells. He underwent total excision of these spinal lesions. Although the majority of the recurrences take place within a few years after surgery, we experienced a case with multiple spinal disseminations 12 years after the resection of the fourth ventricle ependymoma and administration of the radiation therapy to the posterior fossa. Up to our knowledge, this case represents the second unusual late recurrence reported in the literature. We conclude that low grade ependymomas should be followed neurologically and radiologically for more than 10 years after the initial treatment.  相似文献

We found no data in the literature related to oxidative stress index (OSI), total oxidative status (TOS) and prolidase activity in patients with diabetic neuropathy (DN). In this study, we aimed to evaluate the oxidative status of DN patients via measurement of TOS and serum total antioxidant status (TAS) and estimation of OSI using new automated methods. Thirty-eight healthy participants, 40 diabetic patients without neuropathy, and 39 patients with DN were included. Electrophysiological and neurological examinations were performed. The activity of prolidase and levels of TOS and TAS were determined in the serum of patients. The level of TAS was lower, while the levels of TOS and OSI, and activity of prolidase were higher in both DN and diabetic control groups compared with the healthy subjects (p < 0.05). Prolidase activity was found to be higher in the DN group than in the diabetic control group (p = 0.001). In conclusion, the presence of high TOS and OSI levels together with low levels of TAS in diabetic patients with or without neuropathy may support a role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus. In addition, increased serum prolidase activity in DN may be interpreted as evidence of increased collagen turnover.  相似文献
