Traumatic brain injury (TBI) was shown to lead to the development of cerebral microbleeds (CMBs), which are associated with long term cognitive decline and gait disturbances in patients. The elderly is one of the most vulnerable parts of the population to suffer TBI. Importantly, ageing is known to exacerbate microvascular fragility and to promote the formation of CMBs. In this overview, the effect of ageing is discussed on the development and characteristics of TBI-related CMBs, with special emphasis on CMBs associated with mild TBI. Four cases of TBI-related CMBs are described to illustrate the concept that ageing exacerbates the deleterious microvascular effects of TBI and that similar brain trauma may induce more CMBs in old patients than in young ones. Recommendations are made for future prospective studies to establish the mechanistic effects of ageing on the formation of CMBs after TBI, and to determine long-term consequences of CMBs on clinically relevant outcome measures including cognitive performance, gait and balance function.

In an auditory oddball task emotionally negative (aversive) sounds (e.g. rubbing together of polystyrene) and everyday sounds (e.g. ringing of a bicycle bell) were presented as task-irrelevant (novel) sounds. Both the aversive and the everyday sounds elicited the orientation-related P3a component of the event-related potentials (ERPs). In the 154–250 ms range the ERPs for the aversive sounds were more negative than the ERP of the everyday sounds. For the aversive sounds, this negativity was followed by a frontal positive wave (372–456 ms). The aversive sounds elicited larger late positive shift than the everyday sounds. The early negativity is considered as an initial effect in a broad neural network including limbic structures, while the later is related to the cognitive assessment of the stimuli and to memory-related processes.  相似文献

We investigated the role of attention in feature binding in the auditory and the visual modality. One auditory and one visual experiment used the mismatch negativity (MMN and vMMN, respectively) event-related potential to index the memory representations created from stimulus sequences, which were either task-relevant and, therefore, attended or task-irrelevant and ignored. In the latter case, the primary task was a continuous demanding within-modality task. The test sequences were composed of two frequently occurring stimuli, which differed from each other in two stimulus features (standard stimuli) and two infrequently occurring stimuli (deviants), which combined one feature from one standard stimulus with the other feature of the other standard stimulus. Deviant stimuli elicited MMN responses of similar parameters across the different attentional conditions. These results suggest that the memory representations involved in the MMN deviance detection response encoded the frequently occurring feature combinations whether or not the test sequences were attended. A possible alternative to the memory-based interpretation of the visual results, the elicitation of the McCollough color-contingent aftereffect, was ruled out by the results of our third experiment. The current results are compared with those supporting the attentive feature integration theory. We conclude that (1) with comparable stimulus paradigms, similar results have been obtained in the two modalities, (2) there exist preattentive processes of feature binding, however, (3) conjoining features within rich arrays of objects under time pressure and/or longterm retention of the feature-conjoined memory representations may require attentive processes.  相似文献

In a discrimination task event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded in human participants to simultaneously presented visual and auditory stimuli with relevant and irrelevant auditory and visual features. Stimuli consisted of combinations of a sine-wave tone (either target or non-target frequency) and a rectangle of particular (target or non-target) orientation. In two conditions either the auditory or the visual discrimination was easier. Stimuli with just one target feature elicited attention-related ERP components (selection negativity and N2b in the visual, and N2b in the auditory modality) only if that feature could be easily discriminated. This finding shows the hierarchical organization of attentional processing of auditory and visual features. Target stimuli in both conditions elicited visual and auditory attention-related components. This finding, together with the similarity of ERPs to stimuli without target features suggest, that these components cannot be considered as on-line correlates of elementary discrimination processes.  相似文献

Electroencephalographic measures combined with cognitive tasks are widely used for the assessment of cognitive and pathophysiological changes in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Instead of the analysis of EEG data obtained during the performance of the task, in this study data recorded in the immediate after-task period were analyzed. It was expected that this period would correspond to the electrophysiological consequences of the cognitive effort. Data of 14 patients with AD (MMS score: 16-24) were compared to that of 10 healthy control subjects. Reverse counting of a fix duration was used as a cognitive task. Changes of relative frequency spectra, and those of inter-and intrahemispheric coherence were analyzed. Relative theta power was significantly higher in AD patients compared to the controls both before and after the task. The performance of the task resulted in an increase of the relative alpha2 band in the AD group, whereas it slightly decreased in the control group. The most prominent coherence differences between AD and controls were found in the alpha1 band, especially for long-range coherence values. Coherence in this frequency band increased in the control group following the task, not seen in the AD group. We conclude that EEG parameters calculated from epochs following the completion of a cognitive task clearly differentiates patients with AD from normal controls. The electrophysiological changes found in AD may correspond to the decrease of functional connectivity of cortical areas and to the malfunctioning of the networks engaged in the cognitive task investigated.  相似文献

During the CNV recorded in a simple auditory working memory task, task-specific decrease of the relative delta band and a transient increase of the absolute theta band were seen, accompanied by an increase of the absolute alpha1 and alpha2 bands in the posterior region. The decreased delta power probably corresponds to increased task-evoked arousal, whereas the transient theta power increase corresponds to working memory demand and possibly to the orienting response. The increased alpha1 and alpha2 power may be a manifestation of a top-down mechanism revealing control over the execution of a response. The area-specific, task-related, and frequency-dependent changes of EEG complexity measures indicate frontally increasing complexity during the early part of the CNV in the beta frequency bands, which underscores the importance of this region in the mechanisms of anticipatory behavior.  相似文献

The effects of irrelevant stimuli complexity on event-related potentials were investigated in 3 conditions using both auditory and visual oddball tasks. In Conditions 1 and 2, simple standard and target stimuli were presented in series with complex, identical (Condition 1) or variable (Condition 2), task-irrelevant stimuli. In Condition 3, complex standards and targets were presented with simple, identical, task-irrelevant stimuli. In Conditions 1 and 2, but not Condition 3, the irrelevant stimuli elicited the P3a component in both auditory and visual modalities and the N2b component in the visual modality. While we found that variable, irrelevant stimuli evoked larger P3a in the auditory modality compared with identical irrelevant stimuli, we observed the opposite effect in the visual modality. These results suggest that stimuli rareness and irrelevance are not sufficient for eliciting P3a. This component is only elicited by irrelevant stimuli that are at least as complex as the task-related stimuli.  相似文献

This review paper on visual mismatch negativity (MMN), an event-related brain potential component, provides arguments in favor of its theoretical importance in visual cognitive sciences. We propose that (a) previous visual MMN findings can be regarded as ample evidence for the existence of unintentional prediction about the next state of a visual object in the immediate future on the basis of its temporal context ('unintentional temporal-context-based prediction in vision'); (b) such predictive processes may be qualitatively similar to those revealed by behavioral phenomena, such as representational momentum, flash-lag effect, and perceptual sequence learning; (c) such predictive processes may provide advantages for our adaptation to the visual environment at the computational, neural, and behavioral levels, and (d) in concert with such behavioral phenomena, visual MMN could be a unique and powerful tool for tapping into the predictive power of the human visual system.  相似文献
