Trichoscopy features of trichotillomania

Trichotillomania is a form of traction alopecia resulting from repetitive and compulsive hair pulling and plucking. Trichotillomania and patchy alopecia areata may have similar clinical and dermoscopic features in some cases. On trichoscopic examination, the presence of black dots, coiled or hook hair, shafts of varying lengths with fraying or split ends (trichoptilosis), and an absence of exclamation mark hairs and yellow dots are suggestive of trichotillomania.     

Quantity of Eimeria spp. oocyst elimination in sheep

In the present paper, the results obtained are shown after a study by means of multivariant statistical analysis, of the quantity of Eimeria spp. oocyst elimination in sheep, bearing in mind the variations observed in the different areas, in the different age-groups, from month to month, and from year to year. Climatic factors, development of immunity, lambing seasons, and poor hygienic conditions seem to be the factors responsible for the statistically significant differences found when analysing the aforementioned main effects.

Postangioplasty renal artery thrombosis treated intraluminally with thrombolysis. A case report]

The authors present the clinical case of a 31 year female with systemic vascular hypertension secondary to a 65 percent unilateral fibromuscular renal artery stenosis. The centellographic study demonstrated hypoperfusion on the right kidney and serious functional damage; the patient was subject to intraluminal renal angioplasty resulting in right renal arterial thrombosis, which was treated successfully with intra-arterial and intravenous streptokinase infusion. Following the thrombotic therapy, recanalization of the thrombosed artery and normal renal excretion of the contrast substance was observed.     

Transient right-to-left shunting through a patent foramen ovale secondary to unilateral diaphragmatic paralysis.

A 57 year old patient presented with unilateral diaphragmatic paralysis and severe hypoxaemia secondary to transient right-to-left interatrial shunting through a patent foramen ovale. The final diagnosis was made because of the initial detection of a shunt while the patient was breathing 100% oxygen.

The ORBIS International Flying Eye Hospital is dedicated to restoring sight to the blind through medical education programs in developing countries. The modification of a DC-10 aircraft to house a teaching hospital for ophthalmic surgery involved a variety of engineering challenges to satisfy standards for both hospital and aircraft safety. The Technical Services Department maintains all medical equipment on the aircraft, encountering situations not found in traditional clinical engineering departments. Technical education is also an important part of the ORBIS biomedical engineering program. Future plans include expansion of existing technical training efforts, as well as using technology to improve the medical education program as a whole.
