Genetic variants of alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT)

Abstract: This paper reviews the genetic variants of alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT) which have been sequenced with special emphasis on the s.c. deficiency variants. These result in AAT low plasma levels via three main mechanisms: 1) intracellular storage; 2) intracellular degradation; 3) lack of synthesis. Intracellular storage occurs with the classical Z variant and with a few variants called M-like, because of their isoelectric focusing (IF) pattern. The storage phenomen causes liver damage and can be demonstrated at both light and electron microscopic level with the help of immuno-histochemistry. We report a new deficiency variant of AAT (M-Cagliari) characterized by very low plasma levels, massive storage of AAT and liver cirrhosis. By using immunohistochemical techniques and DNA analysis we could demonstrate that M-Cagliari has antigenic and genetic properties other than the Z AAT.     

Die Beurteilung der Molarenvorwanderung mit Hilfe des “verlängerten Lots” nach Nawrath

Zusammenfassung Eine vonNawrath beschriebene Methode zur Bestimmung der sagittalen Lage von Seitenzähnen wird auf ihre Reliabilität untersucht und mit anderen Beurteilungsmöglichkeiten verglichen. Wir kommen zu folgendem Urteil über das verlängerte Lot nachNawrath: Es handelt sich um eine Methode, die sich gedanklich von den therapeutischen Erfordernissen herleitet und sich gut ergänzend in die Methoden der Modellvermessung einfügt. Das Verfahren liefert gut reproduzierbare Ergebnisse. Es kann als zusätzlich angewandte Methode die Sicherheit der Aussage erhöhen.

Summary A method, named Das verlängerte Lot byNawrath is described which defines the position of the first molar. The reliability of this procedure, has been investigated, and it has been compared with different methods of evaluating the mesial migration of lateral teeth. In this method the subsequent treatment is taken into consideration. Using this method of measurement one can determine accurately whether or not migration of the lateral teeth has occurred.

Résumé Cet article décrit une méthode appelée parNawrath Das verlängerte Lot, qui permet de déterminer la position de la première molaire. On a examiné cette méthode en ce qui concerne sa reliabilité et on l'a comparée avec d'autres possibilités d'évaluer la migration des dents latérales. Cette méthode tient compte des exigences thérapeutiques et s'avère être un complément aux mensurations de moulages. Les résultats sont faciles à reproduire. C'est un procédé supplémentaire pour différencier les migrations dentaires absolues.

Die Rolle der Kieferorthopädie bei der Rehabilitation von Patienten mit Lippen-Kiefer-Gaumen-Spalten

Relations between verbal behavior of the orthodontist and communicative cooperation of the patient in regular orthodontic visits.

A study of interrelationships between orthodontist and patient communication characteristics on the basis of audiotape recordings is reported. The subjects were 66 patients from an orthodontic outpatient clinic who were treated by seven orthodontists. Strong relationships (partial correlations) were found between clinicians encouraging behavior (listener signals and symmetrical answering) and patient communicative cooperation (speech volume, detailed answering, questions, initiatives); whereas orthodontists guiding behavior showed lower correlations, only the clinicians' direct questions were significantly related to patient participation. For communication content, relations to patient activity depended on how strongly orthodontists discussed social or therapy topics. Discussion characteristics of both parties were not related to the patient's age, sex, and duration of therapy. However, patient communication differed with the personality of the dentist. Results are discussed with reference to literature, orthodontic consulting practice, and future research.

Zusammenfassung Ein von Geburt an über 6 Jahre beobachteter Fall von Exomphalos-Makroglossie-Gigantismus-Syndrom wird vorgestellt. Dabei wird der Gebißentwicklung und dem Kieferwachstum besondere Beachtung geschenkt.
