STUDY DESIGN: A correlative design using stepwise regression analysis. OBJECTIVE: To explore the variation in spinal isometric strength that can be accounted for by anticipation of pain, sensory perception of pain, functional disability belief, and the fear-avoidance belief in chronic low back pain patients. SUMMARY OF THE BACKGROUND DATA: Several biobehavioral factors contribute to the persistence of pain behavior in chronic patients. Recent studies suggest a need to explore the relation between reduced physical performance and the sensory and cognitive perception of pain. METHODS: Sixty-three patients with chronic low back pain 20 to 56 years of age participated in this study. Visual Analogs Scales, the Fear-Avoidance Belief questionnaire, and the Disability Belief questionnaire were used to measure the sensory and cognitive dimensions of pain. Spinal isometric strength was measured by the Medx lumbar extension machine. RESULTS: Analysis of variance and the stepwise regression analysis demonstrated that anticipation of pain and the fear-avoidance belief about physical activity significantly predicted variation in the spinal isometric strength deficit P < 0. 001. True pain experienced during the testing and answers to the Disability Belief questionnaire were not related. CONCLUSION: The results of this study strongly support the hypothesis that spinal physical capacity in chronicity is not explained solely by the sensory perception of pain. The anticipation of pain and the fear-avoidance belief about physical activities were the strongest predictors of the variation in physical performance. 相似文献

Serum copper and zinc concentrations were measured in 560 apparently healthy Kuwaitis (238 males and 322 females) aged 15-80 years to assess micromineral effect on the indices of lipid metabolism. Following the recommended guidelines of the European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) and the National Cholesterol Education Program Expert Panel (NCEPEP), the incidence of dyslipidemia was assessed from enzymatic assay data of triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) concentrations. Males had significantly lower TC (P=0.029) and HDL-C (P<0.0001) levels than females, while TG were significantly (P=0.023) lower in females. The prevalence of hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, elevated LDL-C, and low HDL-C levels were 35, 30, 22, and 13%, respectively. Copper did not correlate with zinc (r = -0.067, P = 0.135) but was positively associated with TC (r=0.196, P<0.0001), LDL-C (r=0.134, P = 0.003), TG (r = 0.092, P=0.039), and age (r=0.281, P<0.0001). It is concluded that unlike in animal studies, copper excess in humans is associated with hyperlipidemia and therefore will predispose to atherosclerosis. 相似文献
Introduction: In recent years, extensive research has introduced novel ways of reinforcing orthodontic anchorage using a variety of devices temporarily anchored in bone (miniscrews). Currently, there are numerous manufacturers with different miniscrew designs on the market.
Aims: The aim of this paper is to discuss the key design features of different miniscrew systems on the market. Furthermore, to present clinical selection criteria of miniscrews in different settings taking into account the determinant factors.
Methods: Review of the literature was carried out using the following search methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL). The search was focused on studies published until January 2018.
Results: We studied each individual miniscrew from all the identified manufacturers in details. All the features were then summarised and presented as a clinical guideline for the selection of miniscrews.
Conclusions: In this article, we reviewed the development of miniscrews and outlined the general design features of miniscrews as well as specific design features of the current miniscrews in the market. Extensive research of the current products was carried out to help clinicians better understand the difference between the various designs of miniscrews that can be used. 相似文献
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: To evaluate the service purchased from contracted orthodontic laboratories used by HSE (SWA) regional orthodontic unit, St. James's Hospital, Dublin and identify deficiencies in the current service. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A data collection questionnaire was designed and distributed to the departmental orthodontists for a period of three months (October-December 2004). Gold standards, drawn up based on the authors' ideal requirements and published guidelines, were supplied to grade the work returned. RESULTS: During the study period 363 items of laboratory work were requested. 20% of the laboratory work arrived late and most of the delayed work was delayed for more than 24 hours. Most laboratory delays occurred with functional appliances, retainers and study models. Prior to fit, 20% of the appliances required adjustments for more than 30 seconds. 65% of laboratory work returned to the department met all of the gold standards. 10% of appliances were considered unsatisfactory. Functional appliances were most often ill fitting accounting for almost half of the unsatisfactory laboratory work. CONCLUSIONS: The majority of the laboratory work returned to the department met our gold standards and arrived on time. Forty six percent of the appliances required adjustments. Functional appliances required the most adjustments; one in five of all functional appliances ordered were considered unsatisfactory. 相似文献
