Expression of collagen and elastic fibers in duct-ligated submandibular glands of mice

Atrophy of salivary glands may occur by ductal obstruction caused by calculus, infection or neoplastic processes, or as consequence of systemic diseases and aging. In the present work, we have used histochemical methods to study the expression of elastic and collagen fibers during experimental atrophy of the submandibular gland of mice. Glandular atrophy was accompanied by a rapid increase in collagen deposition in both septal and intralobular regions. The expression of elastic fibers was not significantly altered during atrophy; a discrete increase of elastic fibers was noted only around ductal structures. The results showed that experimental ductal obstruction is a useful in vivo model to study molecular events that take part in the remodeling of the extracellular matrix during atrophy of salivary glands.     

Incompatibility of contrast agents with intravascular medications. Work in progress

In vitro and in vivo precipitation of iodinated contrast agents when ioxaglate and papaverine are given together has been reported. To verify these reports and to investigate other medications not previously tested, the authors analyzed mixtures of contrast agents and medications in vitro with a light spectrophotometer and observed them for visible precipitates for up to 120 minutes. Previously reported incompatibilities between ionic or low-osmolality contrast media and medications were verified, and several new incompatibilities were discovered. No incompatibilities were found when the drugs tested were mixed with the new nonionic contrast media.     

Chlamydial etiology of acute lower respiratory tract infections in children in the Sudan

The role of Chlamydia pneumoniae in 110 Sudanese children with signs of acute lower respiratory tract infections (ALRI) was investigated. Four (3.6%) had evidence of C. pneumoniae infection, of whom 3 were culture-positive, while 1 had an antibody response suggesting a recent infection. IgG antibodies at a titer of ≥1:32 to C. pneumoniae, Chlamydia psittaci and Chlamydia trachomatis were detected in 27 (24.5%), 27 (24.5%) and 7 (6.4%) of the 110 ALRI cases, respectively. C. pneumoniae, C. trachomatis or C. psittaci were not detected in nasopharyngeal secretions from any of 110 patients when fluorescence-labeled specific monoclonal antibodies were used. In a seroepidemiological survey, 318 healthy Sudanese persons aged between 1 month and 67 years were studied for C. pneumoniae antibodies.     

Sweet's syndrome—therapy with cyclosporin

We report the case of a 39-year-old female patient suffering from Sweet's syndrome after an upper respiratory tract infection. Cyclosporin A at a dose of 10 mg/kg per day was given as initial treatment. Skin lesions and general malaise resolved within 9 days. The cyclosporin dose was decreased within 21 days, without recurrence of the eruption. Cyclosporin is a potent inhibitor of T lymphocytes, but affects granulocyte and monocyte functions as well. Success of treatment in our case shows that cyclosporin represents an alternative to steroid treatment in patients with Sweet's syndrome.     

Evaluation of a quantitative plasma PCR plate assay for detecting cytomegalovirus infection in marrow transplant recipients.

A plasma PCR test, using a nonradioactive PCR plate assay, was evaluated for detection of human cytomegalovirus reactivation. This assay was compared to Southern blotting and found to perform well. As a noncompetitive method of quantitation, it was similar to a competitive method for detecting the number of genome copies per milliliter of plasma in marrow transplant recipients. This is a technically simplified assay with potential for adaptation to automation.     

The human lymphocyte as a model of beta-adrenoceptor regulation in aging and disease

Extensive experimental evidence suggests that human lymphocytes may model the behavior of other tissues as far as beta-adrenoceptor characteristics are concerned. In fact, although lymphocytes bear only beta2-adrenoceptor subtype, they may mirror other tissues in various physiological and pathological conditions. In the present paper examples are given demonstrating receptor regulations after drug or surgical stimulus. Age-related changes have also been taken into account. Treatment with beta1-selective beta-blockers without or with intrinsic sympathomimetic activity induces, respectively, up- or down-regulation of beta-adrenoceptors of lymphocytes in agreement with other tissues, as suggested by clinical findings. Data on the influence of thyroidectomy are also in agreement with clinical observations and animal experimental findings on other tissues. Preliminary results on old subjects also suggest a possible role of the human lymphocyte in modelling other tissues or organs in relation to aging processes. The clinical application could be of paramount importance due to the impossibility to directly monitor the receptor status in most of human tissues.
