Undiagnosed pheochromocytoma in a patient with lindau disease

Lindau disease is characterized by angioblastic lesions of the cerebellum and spinal cord. It may, rarely, be associated with pheochromocytoma. We describe the management of a patient with Lindau disease who was scheduled to undergo craniotomy for removal of a cerebellar hemangioblastoma and who developed severe hypertension following induction of anesthesia. Subsequent work up revealed a previously undiagnosed pheochromocytoma. The importance of recognizing a possible association between these two conditions is discussed.     

The Safety and Efficacy of Using Drainage in Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair

PurposeThis study aimed to evaluate the effects of not using a drain or placing a drain in the glenohumeral (GH) or subacromial (SA) joint spaces on fluid retention and pain in the early postoperative period and late clinical outcomes.MethodsPatients who underwent arthroscopic rotator cuff repair between 2018 and 2020 were included in the study. Before the operation, demographic data, range of motion (ROM), visual analog scale (VAS) scores, Constant–Murley scores has documented. Deltoid muscle diameter (DMD) were measured. The total amount of irrigation used during the surgery and the operation duration were recorded, and the active amount of fluid coming from the drain in patients with a drain was recorded. The first postoperative DMD measure was made in the operating room and accepted as day 0. DMD measurements repeated postoperative first and second day. VAS assessments were performed on the postoperative first and second days. At the outpatient clinic, these measurements were repeated on the first and second weeks after discharge. Functional evaluations were made with ROM and Constant–Murley scores at the final follow-up examination.ResultsThere was no difference in the amount of drainage between the two groups in which a drain was used. When the three groups were compared among themselves regarding preoperative and postoperative VAS scores, Constant–Murley scores, and DMD, no significant difference was found.ConclusionsWe do not recommend the routine use of drains after arthroscopic rotator cuff surgery in terms of cost-effectiveness.Level of evidenceLevel II: Prospective Cohort Study.     

Second-generation peptidomimetic inhibitors of protein farnesyltransferase demonstrating improved cellular potency and significant in vivo efficacy.

The synthesis and evaluation of analogues of previously reported farnesyltransferase inhibitors, pyridyl benzyl ether 3 and pyridylbenzylamine 4, are described. Substitution of 3 at the 5-position of the core aryl ring resulted in inhibitors of equal or less potency against the enzyme and decreased efficacy in a cellular assay against Ras processing by the enzyme. Substitution of 4 at the benzyl nitrogen yielded 26, which showed improved efficacy and potency and yet presented a poor pharmacokinetic profile. Further modification afforded 30, which demonstrated a dramatically improved pharmacokinetic profile. Compounds 26 and 29 demonstrated significant in vivo efficacy in nude mice inoculated with MiaPaCa-2, a human pancreatic tumor-derived cell line.     

Bilateral pure gonadoblastoma in a 46 XY individual--a case report

We report here a rare case of bilateral pure gonadoblastoma which accounts for only 0.2% of all ovarian tumours seen at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia from 1980 to 1987. This tumour occurred in an 18 year old Chinese "female" who presented with primary amenorrhoea. Examination showed a phenotypic female with poorly developed external gentalia. Exploratory laparotomy revealed a hypoplastic uterus, rudimentary fallopian tubes and streak gonads. Histological examination of the gonads showed a mixed tumour comprising large germ cells and smaller sex cord derivatives arranged in characteristic nests or islands containing hyaline material.     

Mentha: A genus rich in vital nutra‐pharmaceuticals—A review

The genus Mentha comprises several aromatic species, which are cultivated world‐over due to their distinct aroma and commercial value. In addition to traditional food flavoring uses, Mentha are well recognized for their folk medicinal uses, especially to treat cold, fever, and digestive and cardiovascular disorders. A number of biological activities such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, biopesticidal, antitumor, anticancer, antiviral, antiallergic, antiinflammatory, antihypertensive, and urease inhibitory activity have been ascribed to Mentha. The traditional pharmacological attributes of Mentha herbs can be linked to the occurrence of bioactive phytochemicals such as terpenoids, alcohols, rosmarinic acid, and antioxidant phenolics among others. A rich source of bioactives, different species of Mentha, can be explored as a promising candidate for the development of nutra‐pharmaceuticals. This review covers the nutritional, phytochemical, and traditional medicinal aspects and multiple biological activities of some commonly available species of Mentha so as to explore their potential applications for nutra‐pharmaceutical and cosmo‐nutraceutical industry. Detailed chemical profile and pharmaceutical attributes of various Mentha essential oils are also covered. Moreover, based on computational analysis, quantitative chemical component–antioxidant activity relationship model is reviewed to predict and correlate structure–activity relationship of potential bioactives in selected Mentha essential oils leading to discovery and developmenmt of novel natural drugs.
