Within Mexico's floristic abundance, plants with curative properties are outstanding due to their popularity in handling several illnesses, a fact that becomes specially important for the social groups of the tropical regions. In this paper the results of an ethnobotanical study carried out in 57 rural populations from the Mexican states of Oaxaca, Veracruz and Puebla are presented; questionnaire and interview methods were applied, with special attention to the use of plants for medical purposes. The most relevant results were: the taxonomic determination of 237 vegetal species from which 399 curative products are obtained, in order to combat 57 illnesses, the most frequent of which are those related to the digestive system, the skin, the reproductive system and those of supernatural origin, which can only be treated by the use of plants in special ceremonies known as 'limpias', due to their peculiar condition.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori, the main cause of gastritis and peptic ulcer, has been associated with idiopathic chronic urticaria (ICU), an immunological skin disorder of unknown origin. Eosinophilic cationic protein (ECP) is a cytotoxic molecule secreted by the activated eosinophils involved in the pathogenesis of ICU. We assessed serum/gastric juice ECP levels and gastric mucosal eosinophil infiltration in ICU patients infected or not with H. pylori and evaluated the modification after bacterium eradication. METHODS: 33 patients with ICU and 25 dyspeptic controls underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy for histological evaluation and assessment of H. pylori infection. One-week triple therapy was given to H. pylori-positive patients. Serum and gastric juice ECP levels, eosinophil infiltration from gastric mucosal sections and urticaria symptoms were evaluated in all patients at enrollment and 8 weeks after eradication. RESULTS: 19 of 33 (57%) ICU patients and 16 of 25 (64%) controls were found to be infected with H. pylori. Serum ECP was significantly higher in ICU patients compared to controls, regardless of infectious status. Gastric juice ECP and gastric eosinophil infiltration were significantly higher in infected ICU patients when compared both to uninfected ICU patients and controls. H. pylori eradication determined a significant decrease in gastric juice ECP and gastric eosinophil infiltration only in ICU patients. Moreover, a total or partial remission of urticaria symptoms was observed only in ICU patients in whom the bacterium was eradicated. CONCLUSIONS: Although H. pylori infection affects gastric juice ECP and eosinophil infiltration of ICU patients, the role of the bacterium in the pathogenesis of this skin disorder still remains uncertain.  相似文献

Recent advances in the study of evoked responses settled a definition of transient and steady-state visual evoked responses (VER) and discovered the existence of Temporal Frequency Regions in humans. This paper reports data from visual responses evoked by low and high frequency stimuli. White flashes were performed in albino Sprague Dawley rats from 7 to 90 days of age. Frequency analysis technique offered the possibility to evaluate the amplitude parameters and their variations dependent on intensity of luminance and on development. The responses suggested the existence of two temporal frequency regions in the rat: a first one at about 8 Hz, related to high frequencies of EEG, a second one at frequencies ranging from 12 to 24 Hz, related to luminance sensitivity. The development of the second region is correspondent to the complete development of transient VER parameters.  相似文献

Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, relapsing skin disorder which is strictly determined by the epidermal barrier function. In previous studies, there is conclusive evidence that normal‐looking, nonlesional skin presents meaningful barrier function defect and a sub‐clinical eczematous skin reaction. Aim: The authors intended to visualize nonlesional AD skin with the use of high frequency ultrasonography to show that the normal‐looking, nonlesional skin may present significant abnormalities in USG examination. Methods: We have performed analysis with the use of high‐frequency 20 MHz skin sonography in the cases of 15 AD patients of the Department of Dermatology, Medical University, Poznań, Poland. The clinical score has been evaluated on the basis of W‐AZS index and EASI. The results were presented in the form of ultrasonographic images. Results: High frequency ultrasonography revealed an echopoor band within nonlesional skin of six (40%) examined AD patients and in all cases within skin lesions. Conclusion: Our results indicate the significant role of skin ultrasonography in the complete clinical evaluation of patients with AD, which may serve as an element in selection of the most appropriate topical treatment. An echopoor band beneath the echo entry within nonlesional skin of some AD patients may reflect subclinical eczematous reaction and the readiness for the development of typical skin lesions. For this purpose, we suggest to name an intact skin in AD as seemingly healthy skin.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: Increased homocysteine contributes to the pathophysiology of several chronic inflammatory diseases. Whether homocysteine could participate in mucosal inflammation in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has not been explored yet. Our aims were to study the levels of plasma and mucosal homocysteine in IBD patients and to assess whether homocysteine can trigger an inflammatory reaction on human intestinal microvascular endothelial cells (HIMECs). METHODS: Homocysteine was measured in the plasma, mucosal biopsy, and lamina propria mononuclear cell (LPMC) supernatants from normal and IBD subjects. HIMEC were cultured in presence of homocysteine, TNF-alpha, or folic acid, alone or in combination. Expression of vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1) and intercellular cell adhesion molecule 1 was measured by flow cytometry and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) production by ELISA. Phosphorylation of p38 and p42/44 was assessed by immunoblot in HIMEC extracts. T-cell- and monocyte-HIMEC adhesion assays were used to evaluate the impact of homocysteine on leukocyte adhesion to intestinal endothelial cells. RESULTS: Patients with IBD displayed significantly higher homocysteine plasma and mucosal levels than control subjects. IBD-derived LPMC released higher homocysteine than control-derived LPMC. Treatment of HIMEC with homocysteine, and synergistically with the combination of TNF-alpha and homocysteine, triggered HIMEC inflammation, resulting in VCAM-1 up-regulation, MCP-1 production, and p38 phosphorylation. These events lead to an increased capacity of HIMEC to adhere T- and monocyte cells and were blocked by folic acid treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Homocysteine is increased in both the mucosa and plasma of patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis and contributes to the inflammatory state of the mucosal IBD endothelium. Therefore, homocysteine could play a proinflammatory role in IBD, which can be efficiently targeted by folic acid supplementation.  相似文献

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is one of the most common gastrointestinal diseases. An increasing number of people undergo different treatment options. Unfortunately, H. pylori therapy may be troublesome for drug side effects and inefficacious for resistance to antibiotics. METHODOLOGY: One hundred and ninety-three (193) H. pylori-positive patients were randomly assigned to one of the following 7-day treatments: Group A (N = 64): amoxicillin, clarithromycin and rabeprazole; Group B (N = 64): tinidazole, clarithromycin and ranitidine bismuth citrate; Group C (N = 65): tinidazole, clarithromycin and rabeprazole Eradication was assessed by 13C-Urea Breath Test 6-8 weeks after the end of the therapy. Not-eradicated patients underwent a second cycle with tinidazole, tetracycline, bismuth and rabeprazole. All patients were asked to complete a validated questionnaire regarding presence and intensity of drug side effects. RESULTS: One hundred and eighty-eight out of the 193 H. pylori-positive patients (96%) completed therapy. No significant difference in eradication rates was observed among the three groups both in intention to treat analysis and in per protocol analysis. No significant difference in incidence of side effects occurred among groups after the first-line regimens: 48% in group A, 44% in group B and 46% in group C. Twenty-two out of the 193 enrolled subjects (11%) were not eradicated after the first-line therapy. Among them, 86% were successfully eradicated by the tinidazole, tetracycline, bismuth and rabeprazole therapy. Moreover, during quadruple therapy, a higher prevalence and intensity of side effects than in each one of the groups submitted to the first-line triple therapy was observed. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that triple rabeprazole-based eradicating regimens are effective and safe. Incidence of side effects seems low and similar in different three-drug regimens used. Quadruple therapy, which appear highly efficacious as a second line therapy, is associated with a significantly higher incidence of side effects when compared to first-line treatment.  相似文献

Aim

To investigate the usefulness of humerus measurement for sex determination in a sample of medieval skeletons from the Eastern Adriatic Coast. Additional aim was to compare the results with contemporary female population.

Methods

Five humerus measurements (maximum length, epicondylar width, maximum vertical diameter of the head, maximum and minimum diameter of the humerus at midshaft) for 80 male and 35 female medieval and 19 female contemporary humeri were recorded. Only sufficiently preserved skeletons and those with no obvious pathological or traumatic changes that could affect the measurements were included. For ten samples, analysis of DNA was performed in order to determine sex using amelogenin.

Results

The initial comparison of men and women indicated significant differences in all five measures (P < 0.001). Discriminant function for sex determination indicated that as much as 85% of cases could be properly categorized, with better results in men (86%) than women (80%). Furthermore, the comparison of the medieval and contemporary women did not show significant difference in any of the measured features. Sex results obtained by anthropological and DNA analysis matched in all 10 cases.

Conclusion

The results indicate that humerus measurement in Croatian medieval population may be sufficient to determine the sex of the skeleton. Furthermore, it seems that secular changes have not substantially affected contemporary population, suggesting that the results of this study are transferable to contemporary population as well.Once the skeletal remains are uncovered, anthropologists initially aim to reconstruct the biological profile of the person, which includes sex, age, and height estimation. During the reconstruction process, numerous issues may arise, including bone fragmentation and poor preservation of skeletal remains, coupled with the complexity of human skeleton (1,2). Sex determination is one of the first and basic steps of assessing the biological profile. Although the analysis of DNA is the most reliable method for sex determination (3), it is also the most expensive and time consuming method, which can also be hindered by local conditions. This may especially be true in cases of poor preservation of the remains, inhibitors effects, or a small amount of extracted DNA from the sample.In absence of DNA results, skeletal remains can be used to infer subject’s sex via two methods, morphological and anthropometric. The morphological approach is based on the examination of the bones that show the strongest sexual dimorphism, principally the skull and the pelvis (4). However, this method is not always reliable, especially if the skull is fragmented or incomplete. Age can also affect the results, especially in elderly women, in which morphological characteristics of the skull tend to resemble those of men (5). Although morphological methods are very important for a preliminary sex assessment, they additionally rely on the experience of the examiner and are therefore rather subjective and unreliable.The second approach is based on anthropometric analysis, which relies on the bone measurements. The main analytic approach is based on discriminant function analysis, which attempts to classify subjects into each of the sexes, by using either one or more bones (6). This kind of analysis is a very important quantitative method (7) for sex determination as it reduces the subjectivity of the examiner (2,4,8). So far, only a few such studies have been published using Croatian bone samples. These include medieval and contemporary femurs and tibias (8-11) and medieval and contemporary mandibles and teeth (6,12). Such studies are important, since clear differences were observed in different populations (13-15), making this a locally-specific feature that requires the development of regional standards, applicable for local population (16).Besides already used femurs and tibias, humerus is another long bone from the body that is presumably informative for sex determination. This idea was initially derived from the empirical investigations of the skeletal remains, and further supported by the previously reported sexual dimorphism of humeri (7,17), even in cases of severe bone fragmentation (18). Furthermore, such location-specific results may be of interest in modern forensics as well, since observed changes in the skeleton marked predominantly by the increase in height (19), appear to be proportional, with no indication of sexual dimorphism in ancient and modern samples (20). Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the possibility to determine the sex of the subject based on anthropometric analysis of humeri measures.  相似文献
