Vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP) is a rare complication of oral polio vaccine. We describe a fatal case of VAPP in an 8-month-old boy with Major Histocompatibility Class II deficiency. Growth factors, comprising diverse protein and peptide families, are involved in a multitude of developmental processes, including embryogenesis, angiogenesis, and wound healing. Here we show that peptides derived from HB-EGF, amphiregulin, hepatocyte growth factor, PDGF-A and PDGF-B, as well as various FGFs are antimicrobial, demonstrating a previously unknown activity of growth factor-derived peptides. The peptides killed the Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and the Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis, as well as the fungus Candida albicans. Several peptides were also active against the Gram-positive S. aureus. Electron microscopy analysis of peptide-treated bacteria, paired with analysis of peptide effects on liposomes, showed that the peptides exerted membrane-breaking effects similar to those seen after treatment with the “classical” human antimicrobial peptide LL-37. Furthermore, HB-EGF was antibacterial per se, and its epitope GKRKKKGKGLGKKRDPCLRKYK retained its activity in presence of physiological salt and plasma. No discernible hemolysis was noted for the growth factor-derived peptides. Besides providing novel templates for design of peptide-based antimicrobials, our findings demonstrate a previously undisclosed link between the family of growth factors and antimicrobial peptides, both of which are induced during tissue remodelling and repair. 相似文献

Statement of problemIntraoral scanners have been increasingly used in recent years. However, the accuracy of digital scans as it affects marginal adaptation is unclear.PurposeThe purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare the marginal adaptation of single-unit zirconia crowns fabricated with digital scans or with conventional impressions.Material and methodsThe electronic databases PubMed (MEDLINE), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Web of Science (ISI), Scopus, and EMBASE were searched and complemented by a manual search. Risks of bias were assessed by using a modified methodological index for nonrandomized studies (MINORS). Mean ±standard deviation (SD) values of marginal accuracy of studies were extracted for both methods. Mean marginal difference and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated to evaluate the marginal accuracy of each method. Pooled data were statistically analyzed by using a random-effect model.ResultsSeventeen studies were used to perform the meta-analysis. Subgroup analysis was performed based on intraoral scanners. Standardized mean marginal difference and 95% CI of each subgroup were as follows: Lava: -0.85 μm (95% CI: -1.67, -0.03) (P=.043); CEREC: -1.32 μm (95% CI: -2.06, -0.59) (P<.001); iTero: -0.44 μm (95% CI: -1.35, 0.47) (P=.338); TRIOS: -1.26 μm (95% CI: -2.02, -0.51) (P=.001); unknown scanner: -0.21 μm (95% CI: -1.14, 0.72); all studies: -0.89 μm (95% CI: -1.24, -0.54) (P<.001).ConclusionsDigital scanning of prepared teeth for single-unit zirconia restorations resulted in better marginal accuracy than conventional techniques using elastomeric impression materials. 相似文献

Background:
Dentistry equipment are exposed to different types of pathogenic microorganisms. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of spraying three different types of disinfectants on condensational silicones after 5 and 10 min.Materials and Methods:
Totally, 66 circular samples of condensational silicone impression materials of 1 cm diameter and 2 mm thickness were contaminated by Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans fungus. Except for control samples, all of them were disinfected with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) 0.525%, Deconex and Epimax by spraying method. Afterward, they kept in plastic bags with humid rolled cotton for 5 and 10 min. In order to isolate microbiotas, the samples were immersed in 2% trypsin for 1 h and diluted with normal saline in a portion of 1, 1/2, and 1/4. The trypsin suspensions were transferred to culture plates for incubation and colony-forming unit assay. The data were analyzed by Mann–Whitney test and SPSS software version 16 at a significant level of 0.05.Results:
There was a meaningful difference between disinfection effects of Epimax-Deconex for all mentioned microorganisms after 5 min (P = 0.034), and between disinfection effects of NaOCl 0.525%-Epimax for S. aureus (P = 0.043) and P. aeruginosa (P = 0.046) after 5 min. Furthermore, there was a meaningful difference between disinfection effects of Epimax-Deconex (P = 0.034) and NaOCl 0.525%-Epimax (P = 0.034) for P. aeruginosa after 10 min.Conclusion:

ObjectiveTo assess the burden of hypoglycemia among type 2 diabetes patients on antidiabetic drugs with or without use of insulin.Research Design and MethodsWe used mail surveys, administrative claims data, and enrollment information from a sample of adult commercial health plan enrollees (n = 813) with type 2 diabetes during a 12-month period. Patients' experience of hypoglycemia, its impact on patient perspectives and healthcare utilization were the outcomes evaluated.ResultsA greater percentage of patients in the antidiabetic with insulin cohort reported experiencing hypoglycemia compared with patients from sulfonylurea (SU) without insulin and non-SU without insulin cohorts (50% vs. 21% and 12%, respectively; p < 0.01 for both comparisons). While 71% of the sample reported experiencing hypoglycemic symptoms with 28% confirmed by low blood glucose levels, only 10% of the patients had evidence of hypoglycemia event in the claims database. Patients with confirmed hypoglycemia had the highest Hypoglycemia Fear Survey behavior score (8) and worry subscale score (14). Significant differences were noted between the confirmed hypoglycemia and no hypoglycemia cohorts for the 12-item Short Form Health Survey's Mental Component Score (p < 0.001) and Physical Component Score (p = 0.002), and for the EQ-5D index (p < 0.001). Diabetes-related annualized mean total healthcare costs were significantly higher for confirmed hypoglycemia vs. no hypoglycemia cohorts (p = 0.004).ConclusionsSymptomatic hypoglycemia is a more significant burden among type 2 diabetes patients treated with antidiabetic drugs than is estimated by administrative claims data and needs to be considered when choosing therapy. 相似文献

A series of novel benzo[d]oxazole derivatives ( 6a–n ) have been synthesized and biologically evaluated as potential inhibitors of acetylcholinesterases (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE). The chemical structures of all final compounds were confirmed by spectroscopic methods. In vitro studies showed that most of the synthesized compounds are potent acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitors. Among them, compounds 6a and 6j strongly inhibited AChE and BChE activities with IC50 values of 1.03–1.35 and 6.6–8.1 μm , respectively. Docking studies also provided the binding modes of action and identified hydrophobic pi forces as the main interaction. 相似文献

Coronary arteries, which are branched from the sinuses, have tangible effects on the hemodynamic performance of the bileaflet mechanical heart valve (BMHV), especially in the diastolic phase. To better understand this issue, a computer model of ascending aorta including realistic sinus shapes and coronary arteries has been generated in this study in order to investigate the BMHV performance during diastole. Three‐dimensional transient numerical analysis is conducted to simulate the diastolic blood flow through the hinges and in coronary arteries under the assumption of non‐Newtonian behavior. Results indicate that as blood flows to the coronary arteries mainly during diastole, leakage flow from the hinge and other gaps will change considering the influence of coronary arteries. In addition, BMHV in the case of aortic replacement will increase blood flow rate into the coronary arteries about 100% as the mechanical valve resistance is higher than a native heart valve. Also, it will change the wall shear stress (WSS) distribution and increase coronary artery disease (CAD) potential. It is found out that although less leakage flow reduces the velocity magnitudes through the gaps, the shear stress acting on blood elements with non‐Newtonian assumption will be detrimental in the hinge corner at the ventricular side. High WSS of 1800 Pa is observed at beginning of diastole at this region. 相似文献
