'A good person does not feel envy': envy in a nursing community

The definition of envy is commonly based on psychoanalytical views of organizational culture. The purpose of this paper is to describe envy in a nursing community. The population study consisted of random sample of 120 subjects drawn from among the employees of one central hospital in Finland. The study material consisted of data collected by questionnaires (response rate 65%). The data were processed by various statistical methods. Open-ended questions were analysed by inductive content analysis. The results of this study indicated that the employee's view of his/her official position in the nursing community, his/her relationships with his/her fellow workers and the management as well as relationships with other nursing communities are all related to envy. The employee's view of his/her official position intensified his/her feelings of envy, if he/she had other negative feelings, anxiety, dissatisfaction with him/herself, and negative feelings towards fellow workers. The major object of envy was fellow workers' salaries. Envy towards other nursing communities was generated by alleged differences in the amount of labour, or by the charge nurse's greater interest in other sections. Employees coped with envy by hiding these feelings and being modest. Women coped with envy by being silent, while men denied the value of the object of envy.     

Cost-effectiveness analysis of guidelines for antihypertensive care in Finland

Background  

Hypertension is one of the major causes of disease burden affecting the Finnish population. Over the last decade, evidence-based care has emerged to complement other approaches to antihypertensive care, often without health economic assessment of its costs and effects. This study looks at the extent to which changes proposed by the 2002 Finnish evidence-based Current Care Guidelines concerning the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of hypertension (the ACCG scenario) can be considered cost-effective when compared to modelled prior clinical practice (the PCP scenario).     

Nursing leaders' and nurses' view of health

This study is part of a scientific project, 'Multidimensional Health', the main goal of which is to introduce a broad view on health into health care and nursing The purpose of this study is to examine the view of health among nursing leaders and members of caring staff and to compare it to that of patients (a previous study in the project) The study is based on K Eriksson's theory of caring and its view of the human being with a body, soul and spirit, and health as a dynamic process concerning all aspects of human life An inquiry form with open questions that brought to the fore various aspects and dimensions of health was filled in by 20 nursing leaders and was used in interviewing 49 nurses According to the results many aspects of life are contained in the concept 'health' Health is above all an experience of well-being Ways of promoting one's health are described in terms of various 'healthy' living habits and preventive measures A supporting and humane attitude is hoped for in others There is unanimity that feelings affect health Belief may have a positive influence on health The meaning of life is connected with health Even suffering is part of health In interpreting the answers we assume three dimensions of health 'Health as behaviour' connects health with living in a healthy way 'Health as being' would mean a state of health and is characterized by a search for some kind of balance in one's inner state 'Health as becoming', growing towards health, means that a person becomes whole on a higher level of integration     

Training effects of cross-country skiing and running on maximal aerobic cycle performance and on blood lipids

Summary Two experiments were carried out to compare the cardiorespiratory and metabolic effects of cross-country skiing and running training during two successive winters. Forty-year-old men were randomly assigned into skiing (n = 15 in study 1,n = 16 in study 2), running (n = 16 in study 1 andn = 16 in study 2) and control (n = 17 in study 1 andn = 16 in study 2) groups. Three subjects dropped out of the programme. The training lasted 9–10 weeks with 40-min exercise sessions three times each week. The training intensity was controlled at 75%–85% of the maximal oxygen consumption (VO_2max) using portable heart rate metres and the mean heart rate was 156–157 beats·min^–1 in the training groups. In the pooled data of the two studies the mean increase in theVO_2max (in ml·min^–1·kg^–1) on a cycle ergometer was 17% for the skiing group, 13% for the running group and 2% for the control group. The increase inVO_2max was highly significant in the combined exercise group compared to the control group but did not differ significantly between the skiing and running groups. The fasting serum concentrations of lipoproteins and insulin did not change significantly in any of the groups. These results suggested that training by cross-country skiing and running of the same duration and intensity at each session for 9–10 weeks improved equally the cardiorespiratory fitness of untrained middle-aged men.
