Methadone levels and neonatal withdrawal

The purpose of this study was to observe the effects of methadone exposure in utero, with special reference to maternal and neonatal methadone concentrations and neonatal withdrawal. Two groups of mother-infant pairs were studied. In the first group, serum methadone concentrations were determined in infants at 1, 6 and 24 h after delivery. In the second group, blood was obtained at 24, 48, 72 and 96 h after birth. There was no correlation between neonatal serum levels and the intensity of withdrawal symptoms. There was no relationship between maternal methadone dose at delivery or maternal serum levels and neonatal methadone levels. The results of this study may be complicated by the prenatal exposure of the neonates to other drugs of abuse apart from methadone.     

Multicentric extra-abdominal ''myofibromatosis'' : report of a case with ultrastructural findings

A case of multicentric extra-abdominal fibromatosis, a rare entity, arising in a young female is presented. Three separate lesions developed in the same limb over a period of 11 years, one of which recurred on two occasions. Electron microscopy of the most recent tumour showed a predominance of myofibroblasts. The literature regarding extra-abdominal fibromatosis is reviewed and discussed. Redesignation of both abdominal and extra-abdominal fibromatoses as myofibromatoses is suggested.     

Inappropriate Shocks and Elevation of Defibrillation Thresholds in a Patient with Automatic Defibrillator Patch Silastic Erosion and Titanium Mesh Fraying

A case is presented of a defibrillator patch erosion, inappropriate shocks, and high defibrillation thresholds in a 59-year-old man requiring thoracotomy for proper diagnosis and management.     

ANGIONTENSIN-CONVERTING ENZYME ACTIVITY IN DUNNING RAT PROSTATE TUMOR

A dipeptidyl carboxypeptidase activity in the Dunning rat prostate tumor was characterized. This enzyme demonstrated the most prominent properties of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE): that is, it was stimulated by NaCl and Co 2+ and was potently inhibited by captopril. The enzyme solubilized by Triton X-100 had a molecular mass of 110 kDa as determined by gel filtration chromatography. The specific activity of ACE did not change with castration, indicating that ACE activities are not controlled by androgen. The role of ACE in the prostate and its tumors is not understood, but the ability of this enzyme to hydrolyze a number of bioactive peptides suggests that it may function in controlling the molecular forms or activity of regulatory peptides.
