Functional results of the surgery of esophageal opening hernia]

The article presents an original method of laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery, immediate and long-term results of the treatment of 132 patients with esophageal opening hernia. It also describes the analysis of the life quality of patients with the gastroesophageal reflux disease before and after the surgery.     

Danazol administration after gonadotrophin-releasing hormone analogue reduces rebound of uterine myomas [published erratum appears in Hum Reprod 1998 Mar;13(3):780]

We report the results of administration of danazol after suspension of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone analogue (GnRHa) therapy for uterine myomas. A total of 21 women with uterine myomas was treated with 100 mg danazol for 6 months after GnRHa therapy. Uterine volume and endocrine status were monitored monthly by ultrasound and assay of plasma gonadotrophins, oestradiol and progesterone. The results show a rebound of uterine volume about 30% less than in controls at the end of danazol therapy. Menstrual cyclicity returned after 65 +/- 3 days in 16 subjects and five patients remained amenorrhoeic. Hormone assays confirmed renewed ovarian function in the women whose menstrual periods returned. Bone mineral content was substantially reduced during GnRHa treatment but improved significantly during danazol therapy even in the women who remained amenorrhoeic. These results show the utility of danazol in prolonging the therapeutic effects of GnRHa. The mechanism by which danazol inhibits rebound of uterine volume may be due to its antiprogesterone effects on uterine myomas.      

Study by nontraditional analytic methods of features of cortical potentials,taking high-frequency components into account,in dogs during instrumental learning

A new method has been developed for the coding of EEG tracings which is an alternative to the classical spectral correlation analysis. This method has made it possible to compensate to a considerable degree for limitations which are unavoidable with the Fourier transform, and to obtain additional information regarding the form of the tracing, which reflects the fluctuations of brain potentials. The new system that has been presented for coding the EEG is, in our view, the most adequate (of the methods known to us) for identifying the individual features of the EEG, in terms of evaluating both their regional differences and similarities. The data obtained convince us once again of the real existence of high-frequency low-power components of the EEG, and their enhancement during instrumental learning in dogs (motor alimentary conditioned reflexes). In addition, data have been obtained pointing to the intensification in some regions of a slow-wave constituent; this has not been observed previously in carrying out a Fourier transform. Organ-sparing operations in pyloroduodenal stenosis caused by peptic ulcer

An experience with the treatment of 106 patients with pyloroduodenal stenosis of ulcerous etiology by vagotomy with draining operations has shown high efficiency of these measures resulting in lower rate of postoperative lethality. Selective proximal and stem vagotomy does not aggravate gastric atony in patients with stenosis. Electro-stimulation was found to be an effective method of treatment of this complication in the postoperative period of patients with gastric atony.     

Atherogenic properties of beta adrenergic blockaders evident on vascular wall cells

In cultured human cells, beta-adrenoblockers such as propranolol, alprenolol, metoprolol, atenolol, pindolol, and thymolol, as well as sera from patients with coronary heart disease were examined for atherogenic activity following a single administration of propranolol (80 mg) and pindolol (10 mg). Addition of the beta-adrenoblockers to the cell culture was demonstrated to enhance cellular total cholesterol levels and to stimulation their proliferation. Propranolol and pindolol given in a single dose was found to result in the appearance of atherogenic properties of the patients' sera.     

Suppressive effect of immature erythroid cells on the B-cell proliferation

Immature erythroid cells suppress the proliferative response of preactivated B lymphocytes to lipopolysaccharide. The same effect is observed when recombinant human interleukin-2 or culture medium conditioned by preactivated T or B cells is added to cultured cells.
