The relationship between stroke and physical disability was examined in a cohort of adult, Framingham, Massachusetts, residents who, between 1948 and 1951, were assembled for a longitudinal examination of cardiovascular disease. Multivariate analyses examined the amount of residual disability attributable to stroke among 2540 community-dwelling survivors, 27 years after their initial examination, after controlling for age, cardiovascular risk factors, other cardiovascular diseases, and eight general health conditions related to physical disability. Among men living in the community, a history of stroke explained 12% of the variance in physical disability. Suffering a stroke, however, was not as strongly related to physical disability among women living in the community, accounting for only 3% of the variance. Results suggest that although older men and women die from the same major causes, they may not be disabled by the same conditions.  相似文献

We have established two cell lines, PER-452 and PER-453, from an 8-month-old girl with an extensive pineoblastoma. Characterization of these lines revealed that the proto-oncogenes MYC and MYCN were not amplified, but both cell lines showed MYCN expression comparable to a cell line with 200-fold MYCN amplification. Both cell lines contained an i( 17q). These results support the concept that pineoblastomas belong to a larger group of primitive neuroectodermal tumors of the central nervous system. These two cell lines provide a unique opportunity to investigate the molecular genetic mechanisms underlying these neoplasms further. What are the health status and health needs of people with epilepsy? How do clinicians and patients choose between alternative interventions for the same condition? Are health interventions used effectively in the community, and do they improve health? How can we translate findings from regulatory clinical trials to the real world? These and similar questions are the subject of applied translational research. This evolving and broad-ranging area of research involves the application of basic sciences such as epidemiology, biostatistics, economics, and behavioral science to the assessment of health, health interventions, and outcomes. However, despite its palpable importance, applied translational research remains underfunded and underutilized. Using their own innovative research as a prototype, two young and promising investigators provide insights not only into the enormous potential but also the gaps and hurdles of two specific areas of applied translational research, i.e., clinical decision analysis and health services research. The message is clear that if we are to understand and improve the health of people with epilepsy in clinics, hospitals, and communities, we must substantially increase research capacity to address the many gaps that thwart our progress in applied research in epilepsy. This article is part of a Special Issue entitled “The Future of Translational Epilepsy Research”.  相似文献
