We investigated spatial relations of the pterygoid hamuli to the hard palate on 65 skull bases: 31 disarticulated sphenoidal bones from the newborn up to 9 years of age, 19 skulls of adult skeletons (21-59 age group), and 15 skulls aged 60-100 years. We measured: (a) width of the hard palate in the choanal region, (b) length of the hamulus, (c) inclination of the hamulus from the perpendicular line, and (d) distance between the tips of the contralateral hamuli. The width of the hard palate in the choanal region was smallest in children (mean +/- standard deviation, 21.5 +/- 2.6 mm) compared with adult skulls (26.8 +/- 2.3 mm in the 21-59 age group and 25.4 +/- 1.9 mm in the 60-100 age group; P<0.05, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Student-Newman-Keuls post hoc test). Children had the shortest hamulus (3.6 +/- 1.5mm), and its length increased in the adult age group to 6.9+1.7mm (P<0.05), and then again decreased to 5.0 +/- 1.9 mm in the 60-100 age group (P<0.05 vs. adults and children). The distance between the tips of the contralateral hamuli and their lateral inclination from the perpendicular plane were also greater in the adult age group (38.0 +/- 2.7mm and 35.9 +/- 13.7 degrees, respectively) than either in children (31.0 +/- 3.7mm and 19.6 +/- 12.1 degrees) or the elderly (32.7 +/- 3.9mm and 19.7 +/- 10.3 degrees) (P<0.05). Our study showed that the anatomical measures of the pterygoid hamulus and its relation to the surrounding structures change with age, and occur with the changes in the function of pharyngeal and palatal muscles in deglutition. Eleven mumps vaccine strains, all containing live attenuated virus, have been used throughout the world. Although L-Zagreb mumps vaccine has been licensed since 1972, only its partial nucleotide sequence was previously determined (accession numbers , and ). Therefore, we sequenced the entire genome of L-Zagreb vaccine strain (Institute of Immunology Inc., Zagreb, Croatia). In order to investigate the genetic stability of the vaccine, sequences of both L-Zagreb master seed and currently produced vaccine batch were determined and no difference between them was observed. A phylogenetic analysis based on SH gene sequence has shown that L-Zagreb strain does not belong to any of established mumps genotypes and that it is most similar to old, laboratory preserved European strains (1950s-1970s). L-Zagreb nucleotide and deduced protein sequences were compared with other mumps virus sequences obtained from the GenBank. Emphasis was put on functionally important protein regions and known antigenic epitopes. The extensive comparisons of nucleotide and deduced protein sequences between L-Zagreb vaccine strain and other previously determined mumps virus sequences have shown that while the functional regions of HN, V, and L proteins are well conserved among various mumps strains, there can be a substantial amino acid difference in antigenic epitopes of all proteins and in functional regions of F protein. Dietary supplementation with sugar cane derivates may modulate low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) levels. The purpose of this study was to determine if dietary supplement (DS), containing Octacosanol (20 mg) and vitamin K2 (45 µg), could restore the disrupted physiologic relation between LDL-C and serum PCSK9. Double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, single-center study including 87 patients on chronic atorvastatin therapy was conducted. Eighty-seven patients were randomized to receive DS (n = 42) or placebo (n = 45), and followed for 13 weeks. Serum PCSK9 levels, lipid parameters and their relationship were the main efficacy endpoints. The absolute levels of PCSK9 and LDL-C were not significantly different from baseline to 13 weeks. However, physiologic correlation between % change of PCSK9 and % change of LDL-C levels was normalized only in the group of patients treated with DS (r = 0.409, p = 0.012). This study shows that DS can restore statin disrupted physiologic positive correlation between PCSK9 and LDL-C. Elevated PCSK9 level is an independent risk factor so controlling its rise by statins may be important in prevention of cardiovascular events. 相似文献

By comparing the incidence of cystoid macular edema (CME) in three groups of patients having different surgical procedures, we attempted to assess the role of vitreous loss as a risk factor for CME development. In the first group (n = 470), the surgical procedure was extracapsular cataract extraction followed by implantation of posterior chamber lens (EC-CE + PC-IOL). The second group (n = 42) had extracapsular cataract extraction which was complicated by posterior capsule rupture, and therefore anterior vitrectomy followed by implantation of anterior chamber lens had to be performed (ECCE + anterior vitrectomy + AC-IOL). In the third group (n = 22) the surgery was intracapsular cataract extraction followed by anterior chamber lens implantation (ICCE + AC-IOL). The third group was included in this follow up study to assess the role of AC-IOL as a possible causative factor for development of CME in uncomplicated cases of ICCE and AC-IOL. The difference of incidences of CME in the second and third group would therefore depend mostly on the vitreous loss. The incidence of CME diagnosed by fluorescein angiography in the first, second and third group was 1.5% (7/470), 35.7% (15/42) and 9.0% (2/22), respectively. All patients who developed CME were treated with combination of corticosteroid-antibiotic drops, dexamethasone retrobulbarly (40 mg/day) and peroral indomethacine (25 mg/day/6 weeks). The objective of this study was to evaluate amphiphilic star-like macromolecules (ASMs) as a topical drug delivery system. Indomethacin, piroxicam, and ketoprofen were individually encapsulated into the ASMs using coprecipitation. The effects of the ASMs on percutaneous permeation of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) across full thickness, hairless mouse skin were evaluated in vitro using modified Franz diffusion cells. In addition, solubility and in vitro release experiments were performed to characterize ASMs behavior in aqueous media. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and Pluronic P-85 were used as polymer controls to compare the role of PEG and amphiphilic behavior in the ASMs. In vitro release experiments indicated that ASMs can delay drug release (P⋖05), whereas solubility measurements showed that ASMs can increase NSAIDs aqueous solubility (P⋖05). Percutaneous permeation studies revealed that ASMs decreased both flux and Q24 of drugs compared with the control (P⋖10). Skin pretreatment studies with ASM-containing solution before drug application demonstrated that pretreatment similarly influenced NSAID percutaneous permeation. In conclusion, ASMs likely slow drug permeation through 2 mechanisms, delayed drug diffusion from its core and skin dehydration by its shell. Thus, ASMs may be useful for delayed dermal delivery or prevention of compound permeation through the skin (eg, sunscreens, N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide [DEET]) from aqueous formulations. 相似文献

Forty Bosnian refugee couples living in the United States completed a translated version of the PTSD Symptom Scale—Self Report, the Behavioral Acculturation Scale, the Marital Satisfaction Inventory—Revised, and a demographic questionnaire. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology was the best predictor of marital functioning and was related negatively to acculturation. After controlling for PTSD, acculturation did not predict marital functioning. Wives' marital satisfaction was best predicted by husbands' PTSD, husbands' acculturation, and their own PTSD. Husbands' marital satisfaction was not predicted significantly by any of these variables. These findings suggest several implications for mental health professionals dealing with refugees and other traumatized populations. 相似文献

TGF‐β1 is a potent inductor of malignance in cancer cells. TGF‐β1 stimulates the expression of extracellular matrix degrading proteases, cell migration and it is also involved in the epithelial‐mesenchymal transition (EMT). In the present work, we analyzed the role of Spred2 in the urokinase‐type plasminogen activator (uPA) stimulation, EMT and cell migration by TGF‐β1. We found that both the expression of mRNA and the protein level of Spred2 were lower in transformed keratinocytes PDV compared with immortalized keratinocytes MCA‐3D. The transient ectopic expression of Spred2 in PDV cells inhibited the TGF‐β1‐transactivated SRE‐Luc reporter which is related with the ERK1,2 signal. The stable ectopic expression of Spred2 in PDV cells (SP cells) led to the loss of ERK 1,2 activation by TGF‐β1, although Smad2 activation was not affected, and the knockdown of Spred2 enhanced the activation of ERK1,2 signal by TGF‐β1. The increment of uPA expression induced by TGF‐β1 was suppressed in SP cells. In contrast, the stimulus on PAI‐1 expression was not affected and comparable to parental PDV cells. SP cells under TGF‐β1 treatment were unable to display the EMT, since the overexpression of Spred2 abolished the TGF‐β1‐induced disruption of the E‐cadherin cell to cell interactions, reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton and upregulation of the mesenchymal marker vimentin. Finally, SP cells could not respond to the TGF‐β1 stimulus on cell migration. Taken together, the data in the present study suggests that Spred2 is a regulator of TGF‐β1‐induced malignance in transformed keratinocytes. 相似文献

The Serbian Food Consumption Survey among 1–9-year-old-children was conceptualized and conducted in compliance with the principles, established protocols, and guidelines of the EU Menu project between 2017 and 2021. Valid data were collected for 576 individuals (290 1–3-year-old toddlers and 276 3–9-year-old children). Regardless of age and gender category, the majority (68.80%) of children had normal weights according to the Body Mass Index-for-age classification system. The median daily energy intake was 1406.71 kcal with no differences between the settlement types. The overall median contributions of carbohydrates, protein, and fat to the total energy intake were 47.54%, 14.06%, and 37.88%, respectively. The proportions of the macronutrient intake deviated from the dietary reference values with compliance to the recommendations being particularly poor for fat and fiber. The consumption of energy-dense food groups such as meat and meat products, fat and oil, sugar, and confections was more pronounced among older children. The survey results provide a valuable insight into the nutritional status and dietary habits of toddlers and children 1–9 years old living in Serbia. They may serve as an evidence platform for public health programs, a valuable asset for decision-makers, and a reliable reference to guide nutritional policies, diet monitoring, and interventions targeting this population group in the future. 相似文献
