On the basis of three case reports, different treatment modalities of primary hyperparathyroidism of the jaws are presented. Surgical intervention made as the result of misdiagnosis in the first case caused an unnecessary bone defect and delayed bone regeneration for several months. Two other cases showed spontaneous regeneration of bone after parathyroidectomy. The second case disproved the earlier opinion that regeneration of the bone lesions could last for several years, and that the normal morphology could be restored. Complete resolution of the central giant-cell lesion was found 6 months after removal of the parathyroid adenoma.  相似文献

Objectives

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of four different powered toothbrushes with side-to-side action for noncontact biofilm removal in vitro.

Materials and methods

A three-species biofilm was formed in vitro on protein-coated titanium disks using a flow chamber combined with a static biofilm growth model. Subsequently, the biofilm-coated substrates were exposed to four different side-to-side toothbrushes (A, B, C, and D) with various brushing times (2, 4, and 6 s) and brushing (bristle-to-disk) distances (0, 2, and 4 mm). The biofilm volumes were measured using volumetric analyses with confocal laser scanning microscope images and Imaris version 7.5.2 software.

Results

The median percentages of biofilm reduction by the analyzed toothbrushes ranged from 9 % to 80 %. The abilities of the tested toothbrushes to remove the in vitro biofilm differed significantly (p?<?0.05). Two of the tested toothbrushes (C and D) were capable of significant biofilm reduction by noncontact brushing.

Conclusions

It was possible to reduce a three-species in vitro biofilm by noncontact brushing with two out of four side-to-side toothbrushes.

Clinical relevance

Toothbrushes C and D show in vitro a high efficacy in biofilm removal without bristle contact.  相似文献

Forces applied to vocal fold tissue as the vocal folds collide may cause tissue injury that manifests as benign organic lesions. A novel method for measuring this quantity in humans in vivo uses a low-profile force sensor that extends along the length and depth of the glottis. Sensor design facilitates its placement and stabilization so that phonation can be initiated and maintained while it is in place, with minimal interference in vocal fold vibration. In 2 individuals with 1 vibrating vocal fold and 1 nonvibrating vocal fold, peak collision force correlates more strongly with voice intensity than pitch. Vocal fold collision forces in 1 individual with 2 vibrating vocal folds are of the same order of magnitude as in previous studies. Correlations among peak collision force, voice intensity, and pitch were indeterminate in this participant because of the small number of data points. Sensor modifications are proposed so that it can be used to reliably estimate collision force in individuals with 2 vibrating vocal folds and with changing vocal tract conformations.  相似文献

INTRODUCTION: Quantitative measurement of vocal fold movements can be done either with high-speed imaging or with short interval, color-filtered double strobe flash-stroboscopy. The physical and technical elements of this new technique are described. METHODS: Two special strobe units (KAY Elemetrics RLS 9100) are used in a master-slave configuration. In this way an adjustable interval of 0.1-2.0 ms between flashes is introduced. The strobe flashes are color filtered and are separated by a brief interval. By this means a double exposure is created in each video frame.Real-time visualization of opening and closing velocities over the entire length of the vocal fold from anterior to posterior is possible.Quantification is possible off-line after image calibration. CONCLUSION: Short-interval, color-filtered double-strobe flash stroboscopy allows quantitative measurement of the velocity of vocal fold movements during vibration at different pitches and sound pressure levels (SPL). Images gained with this new technique provide information about a dynamic property (velocity) of the vocal fold within a single image.Therefore, its use could be helpful from the aspect of clinical documentation.  相似文献

To assess the importance of sewage treatment plant effluents on fish health, we studied gudgeon in two rivers in the Swiss midlands (Canton Lucerne). Both rivers receive pollution from diffuse sources, while one also receives the effluent of a sewage treatment plant. Male and female gudgeon during and outside of the spawning season were compared with respect to reproductive parameters and health status across both rivers as well as upstream and downstream of the STP. Several biomarkers were studied, including cytochrome P4501A, 7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase, plasma vitellogenin, ovotestis, lipid, liver histology, condition factor, gonadosomatic index, splenosomatic index, parasites of spleen and liver, population structure, and species diversity. Gudgeons of both rivers exhibited signs of a moderately impaired health status. By a stepwise backward analysis, the cytochrome P4501A content, the splenosomatic index, and the incidence of parasites in the liver were found to provide the best discrimination of the three sampling sites. Evidence of a significant elevation in response to the sewage treatment plant effluent was found neither in vitellogenin concentration nor in the ovotestis rate. While population structure was analyzed upstream and downstream of the sewage treatment plant, only gudgeons of the latter site revealed a disturbed population structure, most probably caused by a former nitrite discharge.  相似文献

The mustache bat, Pteronotus parnellii, depends on echolocation to navigate and capture prey. This adaptation is reflected in the large size and elaboration of brainstem auditory structures and in the minimal development of visual structures. The superior colliculus, usually associated with orienting the eyes, is nevertheless large and well developed in Pteronotus. This observation raises the question of whether the superior colliculus in the echolocating bat has evolved to play a major role in auditory rather than visual orientation. The connections of the superior colliculus in Pteronotus were studied with the aid of anterograde and retrograde transport of wheat germ agglutinin conjugated to HRP. These results indicate that the superior colliculus of Pteronotus is composed almost entirely of the layers beneath stratum opticum. The retinal projection is restricted to a very thin zone just beneath the pial surface. Prominent afferent pathways originate in motor structures, particularly the substantia nigra and the deep nuclei of the cerebellum. Sensory input from the auditory system originates in three brainstem nuclei: the inferior colliculus, the anterolateral periolivary nucleus, and the dorsal nuclei of the lateral lemniscus. The projections from these auditory structures terminate mainly in the central tier of the deep layer. The most prominent efferent pathways are those to medial motor structures of the contralateral brainstem via the predorsal bundle and to the ipsilateral midbrain and pontine tegmentum via the lateral efferent bundle. Ascending projections to the diencephalon are mainly to the medial dorsal nucleus and zona incerta. Thus, the superior colliculus in Pteronotus possesses well-developed anatomical connections that could mediate reflexes for orienting its ears, head, or body toward objects detected by echolocation.  相似文献
