Sleep disturbances are a hallmark feature of post‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and associated with poor clinical outcomes. Few studies have examined sleep quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG), a technique able to detect subtle differences that polysomnography does not capture. We hypothesized that greater high‐frequency qEEG would reflect ‘hyperarousal’ in combat veterans with PTSD (n = 16) compared to veterans without PTSD (n = 13). EEG power in traditional EEG frequency bands was computed for artifact‐free sleep epochs across an entire night. Correlations were performed between qEEG and ratings of PTSD symptoms and combat exposure. The groups did not differ significantly in whole‐night qEEG measures for either rapid eye movement (REM) or non‐REM (NREM) sleep. Non‐significant medium effect sizes suggest less REM beta (opposite to our hypothesis), less REM and NREM sigma and more NREM gamma in combat veterans with PTSD. Positive correlations were found between combat exposure and NREM beta (PTSD group only), and REM and NREM sigma (non‐PTSD group only). Results did not support global hyperarousal in PTSD as indexed by increased beta qEEG activity. The correlation of sigma activity with combat exposure in those without PTSD and the non‐significant trend towards less sigma activity during both REM and NREM sleep in combat veterans with PTSD suggests that differential information processing during sleep may characterize combat‐exposed military veterans with and without PTSD.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. One hundred pediatric patients with Turner syndrome were studied to determine the correlation between the presence of anti-thyroid antibodies with age and karyotype, and the value of anti-thyroid antibody titers as predictors of subsequent thyroid abnormalities. (54 patients = 45,X; 46 = other karyotypes.) The frequency of positive titers of anti-thyroid antibodies increased linearly with cumulative age. Anti-parietal cell and anti-adrenocortical cell antibodies were not increased in these patients (1.3 and 2.6% respectively). The ability to use positive anti-thyroid antibody titers to predict the development of thyroid abnormalities increased from age 10 years and became statistically significant at ages 13-17 years for the whole group as well as 45,X patients. None of the patients had clinical symptoms of thyroid dysfunction although 22% developed thyroid abnormalities, which included elevated TSH, low T4, and/or goiter.  相似文献

Renal biopsy studies in 150 children with non-specific glomerulopathy. Acta Paediatr Scand, 63:345, 1974.–The experience with light microscopic examination of kidney biopsies in 150 children with nonspecific glomerulopathy is reported. Most major types of glomerular lesions, as they are at present known, were observed but in a very uneven distribution. Four groups of clinical symptoms were observed in the primary as well as in the associated non-specific glomerulopathies: hematuria, proteinuria, acute nephritic syndrome and nephrotic syndrome. Although in a number of instances, the histologic lesio.i was suggested by the clinical picture, a correlation was lacking in most instances. More information was obtained from the histology when the evolution was considered, particularly in the primary nephrotic syndrome and the Schonlein-Henoch nephropathy.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Elevated oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) is associated with atherosclerosis and high cardiovascular risk. Previously, we identified 18 genes in coronary plaque macrophages of hypercholesterolemic pigs that correlated with plaque oxLDL. OBJECTIVE: To determine which of these genes were differentially expressed in blood monocytes and correlated with blood and plaque oxLDL and with plaque complexity. METHODS: RNA expression in monocytes of 27 hypercholesterolemic and 12 control pigs was analyzed with quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: Five of 12 genes with detectable expression in monocytes were overexpressed (at P < 0.01 level) in blood monocytes of hypercholesterolemic pigs: ABCA1, SCD, IRF1, SDC2, and TLR2. ABCA1 RNA expression in blood monocytes correlated with blood oxLDL, and its RNA and protein expression was increased prior to atherosclerotic plaque formation. Higher expression of ABCA1 in monocytes was associated with higher plaque complexity and higher plaque oxLDL. Immunostaining of coronary plaques showed the association of ABCA1 with macrophages, lipids, and oxLDL; ABCA1 protein correlated with plaque oxLDL (R(2) = 0.66; P < 0.0001). In THP-1 monocytes, oxLDL induced ABCA1 expression. OxLDL-induced foam cell generation in THP-1 and human monocyte-derived macrophages was associated with a further increase of ABCA1 expression. CONCLUSIONS: The increase of ABCA1 in monocytes in association with blood oxLDL prior to atherosclerotic lesion formation and the association of higher ABCA1 with higher plaque complexity suggests that ABCA1 is an early biomarker of atherosclerosis. The influence of nursing leadership on nurse performance: a systematic literature review Aim The aim was to explore leadership factors that influence nurse performance and particularly, the role that nursing leadership behaviors play in nurses’ perceptions of performance motivation. Background Nurse performance is vital to quality patient care outcomes and nursing leadership behaviors have been linked to nurse performance. Evaluations A review of research articles that examined the factors that nurses perceived as influencing their motivation and performance was conducted. Eight studies were included in the final analysis. Key issues Nurses’ perceptions of factors that affect their motivation and ability to perform were grouped into five categories using content analysis: autonomy, work relationships, resource accessibility, nurse factors, and leadership practices. Nursing leadership behaviors were found to influence both nurses’ motivations directly and indirectly via other factors. Conclusion The review suggests that nurse performance may be improved by addressing nurse autonomy, relationships among nurses, their colleagues and leaders, and resource accessibility. Implications for nursing management Nursing managers and leaders may enhance their nurses’ performance by understanding and addressing the factors that affect their ability and motivation to perform.  相似文献
