Hepatic Xanthine Oxidase and Ferritin Iron in the Developing Rat

The absence of hepatic xanthine oxidase in the fetus and newborn rat isassociated with a very high liver ferritin iron content. Soon after birth hepaticxanthine oxidase activity increases significantly coincident with a markeddecrease in liver ferritin iron content. At weaning, hepatic ferritin iron isvery low but slowly rises subsequent to intake of a normal diet containingiron.

Voluntary involvement in community health promotion: the Pawtucket Heart Health Program

The Pawtucket Heart Health Program employs a community activationapproach aimed at reducing cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.This approach is put into operation through the recruitmentof lay volunteers from the community to assist in planning,implementing, evaluating and managing various components ofthe Program. This unique approach of voluntary delivery of programmesis presented in this report. Strategies for the recruitment,interview and placement, training, maintenance and evaluationof volunteers are discussed. The characteristics of people whohave volunteered for specific administrative and service deliveryjobs with the Pawtucket Heart Health Program are also described.The volunteer delivery focus of the Program provides a modelfor adaptation by other public health projects.     

Transient Data Stream Dissociation in Computerized Data Acquisition System Masquerading as a Sensing Abnormality

During testing of a CPI model 1715 ICD, an apparent sensing abnormality was noted following shock delivery for VF. Close inspection of the recording prior to the defib-rillation attempt revealed that the surface leads spontaneously lost 848 ms of data while the event marker was unaffected. Computer simulations revealed that an inadequate buffer size for the ampHfied (surface ECC) data was the likely source of data loss. It is important to recognize tbat a discordance between surface leads and event marker may represent an abnormality in tlie data acquisition system and simulate an ICD or lead malfunction.
