Most studies have been unable to identify reliable acoustic cues for the recognition of the English nonsibilant fricatives [see text]. The present study was designed to test the extent to which the perception of these fricatives by normal-hearing adults is based on other sources of information, namely, linguistic context and visual information. In Experiment 1, target words beginning with /f/, /theta/, /s/, or [see text] were preceded by either a semantically congruous or incongruous precursor sentence. Results showed an effect of linguistic context on the perception of the distinction between /f/ and /theta/ and on the acoustically more robust distinction between /s/ and [see text]. In Experiment 2, participants identified syllables consisting of the fricatives [see text] paired with the vowels /i, a, u/. Three conditions were contrasted: Stimuli were presented with (a) both auditory and visual information, (b) auditory information alone, or (c) visual information alone. When errors in terms of voicing were ignored in all 3 conditions, results indicated that perception of these fricatives is as good with visual information alone as with both auditory and visual information combined, and better than for auditory information alone. 1. Multiple microelectrode maps of the hand representation within and across the borders of cortical area 3b were obtained before, immediately after, or several weeks after a period of behaviorally controlled hand use. Owl monkeys were conditioned in a task that produced cutaneous stimulation of a limited sector of skin on the distal phalanges of one or more fingers. 2. Analysis of microelectrode mapping experiment data revealed that 1) stimulated skin surfaces were represented over expanded cortical areas. 2) Most of the cutaneous receptive fields recorded within these expanded cortical representational zones were unusually small. 3) The internal topography of representation of the stimulated and immediately surrounding skin surfaces differed greatly from that recorded in control experiments. Representational discontinuities emerged in this map region, and "hypercolumn" distances in this map sector were grossly abnormal. 4) Borders between the representations of individual digits and digit segments commonly shifted. 5) The functionally defined rostral border of area 3b shifted farther rostralward, manifesting either an expansion of the cutaneous area 3b fingertip representation into cortical field 3a or an emergence of a cutaneous input zone in the caudal aspect of this normally predominantly deep-receptor representational field. 6) Significant lateralward translocations of the borders between the representations of the hand and face were recorded in all cases. 7) The absolute locations--and in some cases the areas or magnifications--of representations of many skin surfaces not directly involved in the trained behavior also changed significantly. However, the most striking areal, positional, and topographic changes were related to the representations of the behaviorally stimulated skin in every studied monkey. 3. These experiments demonstrate that functional cortical remodeling of the S1 koniocortical field, area 3b, results from behavioral manipulations in normal adult owl monkeys. Despite the discovery in 1990 that mutations in the fibrillin-1 gene cause the Marfan syndrome, the pathogenesis of the life-threatening dissections associated with this disease is far from elucidated. Both the massive number of known fibrillin-1 mutations that result in a heterogeneous patient population and the strongly heterogeneous histology of patients' aortae presumably contribute to this lack of knowledge. We performed a detailed ultrastructural immunoelectron microscopic and histochemical analysis of the dissected media of ascending aortae of 10 patients with Marfan syndrome and compared them with those of 6 patients without Marfan syndrome and 77 individuals without known aortic disease. Relatively similar abnormalities were found in both patient groups, although they were more numerous and more diffusely spread in the patients with Marfan syndrome than in the patients without Marfan syndrome. The most conspicuous ultrastructural defects were the formation of abrupt transverse tears in thick and compact elastic lamellae and the local breaking up of smooth muscle cell-elastic lamella connections (that largely consist of microfibrils and elastic extensions, protruding from the elastic lamellae). This breaking up was characterized by a strongly reduced number of microfibrils and a severe shortening of the elastic extensions. Finally, the elastic extensions detached from the lamellae to ultimately degenerate and disappear. These changes were found mainly in the oldest group of patients with Marfan syndrome, indicating that they represented a loss of previously normally developed structures. We also compared our findings with those from a recently developed murine Marfan model (Pereira L, Lee SY, Gayraud B, Andrilopoulos K, Shapiro SD, Bunton T, Biery NJ, Dietz HC, Sakai LY, Ramirez F.
