Clinical effects and plasma levels of Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) in heavy and light users of cannabis

⁹-Tetrahydrocannabinol (⁹-THC) was administered in a crossover design by smoking and IV injection to groups of heavy and light users of marihuana. Plasma concentrations of ⁹-THC were similar for the groups after IV injection of 5.0 mg ⁹-THC, but the AUC_{0–240 min} showed a trend towards lower values for the heavy user group. To achieve a maximum desired high, both groups smoked similar amounts (about 13 mg) of ⁹-THC. Heavy users tended to have higher plasma levels than light users. The systemic availability of smoked ⁹-THC was significantly higher for the heavy users (heavy users 23±16% vs 10±7% for light users). These results also indicate that heavy cannabis users smoke more efficiently than casual smokers.Both light and heavy users showed more clinical effect following IV administration than after smoking. The response of the heavy users, both with respect to effect on heart and high, was quite comparable to that of light users.The present study does not suggest that tolerance readily develops in heavy users.     

Propranolol in experimentally induced stress

The beta-adrenergic receptor-blocking drug, d,l-propranolol, was compared with placebo for relief of experimentally induced anxiety. Subjects were chosen on the basis of having high levels of trait anxiety. Stress was induced experimentally by two performance tests. Single 40-mg doses of propranolol significantly slowed the heart rate, suggesting a satisfactory pharmacologic effect of the drug. The treatment was not superior to placebo, however, on any other measure. The experimental model used had clearly demonstrated an antianxiety effect of single 5-mg doses of diazepam. Propranolol at the dose used had little effect on psychic anxiety as determined by this model.     

Periodontal treatment of multi rooted teeth.

Abstract This paper describes: (1) a system for classification and treatment of furcation involvements, and (2) a 5-year post-operative evaluation of 100 patients treated for periodontal breakdown in the bi/tri-furction areas. The results of this study demonstrate that it is possible to arrest further destruction within the root furcation area. The successful treatment of the multirooted teeth was probably the consequence of: (1) the quasi total elimination of plaque retention areas from the bi/tri-furcation area, and (2) meticulous oral hygiene by the patients.
