The Latin American population has a double way of immigration, one toward the United States by proximity and another toward Spain by sociocultural affinity. This population increase is affecting organ donation and transplantation in receiving countries.
Objective
To analyze the brain death (BD) concept knowledge in the Dominican Republic immigrant population in Florida (United States) and Spain.Method
Population under study: Population born in the Dominican Republic, resident in Florida (United States) and in Spain. Inclusion criteria: Population older than 15 years stratified by age and sex. Assessment instrument: Donation attitude questionnaire PCID-DTO-Ríos. Fieldwork: Random selection based on stratification. Immigration support association collaboration in Florida and Spain was needed to locate potential respondents. Completion was anonymous and self-administered, with verbal consent.Results
A total of 123 respondents, 57 residents in Spain and 66 in Florida, have been included in the study. The 27% (n = 33) of the respondents knowledgeable of the BD concept consider it the death of an individual. Of the remainder, 52% (n = 64) do not know about it, and the remaining 21% (n = 26) believe it does not mean the death of a patient. No differences were observed regarding migration countries (P > .05). There was no association of the BD concept with other psychosocial factors analyzed or with the attitude toward organ donation.Conclusions
Knowledge of the BD concept among the Dominican immigrant population is similar in Spain and Florida, and, unlike most studies, there is no objective association with the attitude toward organ donation. 相似文献4.
Active and passive immunization with Pseudomonas aeruginosa ribosomal vaccines and antisera in the burned rat model 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Pseudomonas aeruginosa ribosomal vaccines were tested for their ability to protect rats subjected to a 20% total body surface burn against the lethal effects of infection with homologous organisms. When administered prior to burning, the vaccines provided 100% protection. When administered postburning, the vaccine from one strain also provided 100% protection when the time interval between vaccination and infection was 3 days. When this time interval was reduced to 1 or 2 days, approximately 50% protection was obtained with the same vaccine. The vaccine from a second strain tested provided about 50% protection with a 3-day time interval. In addition, passive immunization using antiserum to a ribosomal vaccine was also demonstrated to be effective in protecting burned and infected rats, especially when multiple doses of antiserum were used. In this case, 80% protection was obtained (with no protection observed using multiple doses of normal serum). Finally, a comparison of ribosomal and lipopolysaccharide vaccines and antisera was also performed. 相似文献

The cell organization of the pituitary gland and the relationship between neurohypophysis and adenohypophysis in the early developmental stages of the gilthead sea bream, Sparus aurata, were studied by electron microscopy. In newly hatched larvae, the pituitary gland was embedded in the ventral floor of the diencephalon and separated from the hypothalamus by a continuous basal lamina. Elongated mesenchymal cells next to the ventral surface were observed. At this stage, there was no neurohypophysis and the adenohypophysis consisted of undifferentiated endocrine cells with small scarce secretory granules and a few stellate cells, with no distinctive zonation. An incipient neurohypophysis was present in 1-day-old larvae. The first evagination of the neurohypophysis into the adenohypophysis were observed in 2-day-old larvae and developed progressively with age, being deeper in the caudal zone. Two regions in the adenohypophysis, one anterior — the presumptive pars distalis — and one posterior — the presumptive pars intermedia — were found in 2-day-old larvae. Three regions (rostral and proximal pars distalis and pars intermedia) were clearly distinguishable in 4-day-old larvae. The ultrastructural features of the pituitary endocrine cells varied during gland differentiation, with the secretory granules gradually increasing in number and size, accompanying organelle development. Nevertheless, even in the oldest larvae studied (65 days), undifferentiated cells similar to those in the earliest stages were observed. The first blood vessels appeared in the neurohypophysis around 16 days after hatching. During early development, the pituitary gland progressively emerged from the ventral floor of the brain. By 16 days, the principal pattern of the pituitary gland architecture appeared to be established. 相似文献

Hemorrhagic shock causes a severe suppression of cellular immunity and an increased susceptibility to sepsis that may be due to increased release of prostaglandin E2 by macrophages. Since chloroquine inhibits the secretion of prostaglandin E2 by macrophages in vitro, the effects of chloroquine administration in vivo following hemorrhagic shock on macrophage prostaglandin E2 secretion and on depressed cellular immunity were examined. Inbred C3H/HeN male mice, aged 6 to 8 weeks, were bled to a mean blood pressure of 35 mm Hg, which was maintained for 60 minutes, and adequately, resuscitated. Mice then received intramuscular injections of either saline (vehicle) or chloroquine (10 mg/kg of body weight). Prostaglandin E2 in macrophage supernatants (radioimmunoassay) concanavalin A-dependent splenocyte proliferation, and interleukin 2 in splenocyte supernatants (CTLL 20 interleukin 2-dependent proliferation) were determined 2 or 24 hours later. Hemorrhage caused a significant decrease of splenocyte proliferation (47%) and interleukin 2 release (49%) at 24 hours, while prostaglandin E2 secretion from macrophages was elevated at 2 hours. Chloroquine treatment attenuated depression of splenocyte functions and reduced prostaglandin E2 release. Furthermore, chloroquine treatment decreased the mortality of septic mice after hemorrhage to levels comparable with those of sham-operated mice. Thus, chloroquine may be a useful adjunct in the clinical setting for the treatment of shock-induced immunodepression and increased susceptibility to sepsis following hemorrhage. 相似文献

We report the results of a histologic evaluation of muscle (muscularis mucosa) in the lamina propria of the urinary bladder performed on 100 consecutive cystectomy specimens. Muscle fibers were found in the lamina propria lying parallel to the mucosa and forming a distinct muscularis mucosa in three cases; they were interrupted or discontinuous in 20 cases, and dispersed or scattered, forming thin bundles, in 71 cases. In six cases, there were no muscle fibers in the lamina propria. In addition, we noticed that the lamina propria contains large vessels that run along the length of the lamina propria in a continuous or interrupted fashion. When muscle fibers are present, they are associated with these vessels. Since prognosis and management of muscle invasive carcinomas (stage B) is different from that of lamina propria-invasive tumors (stage A), pathologists and urologists should be aware of the presence of a muscularis mucosa in the urinary bladder. 相似文献

Amoeboid microglial cells (brain macrophages) were purified from early post-natal mouse brain cultures. The percentage of cells stained with an anti-Mac-1 antibody was greater than 95%. Stimulation of these brain macrophages by lipopolysaccharides induced the synthesis of interleukin-1 (IL-1), which, in part, remained associated with the cell surface and, in part, was released into the culture medium. In contrast, pure primary astrocyte cultures and cell lines of transformed or immortalised astrocytes did not synthesise significant amounts of IL-1, demonstrating that amoeboid microglia and not astrocytes synthesise IL-1 in vitro. These physiological data were confirmed by RNA hybridisation studies showing that, on LPS treatment, brain macrophages synthesise significant amounts of IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta mRNAs. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Transmission of bacterial and viral pathogens is known to occur by hand contact with fomites. Exercise equipment in public facilities may serve as such fomites. It is not known whether equipment disinfection might reduce microorganism colonization. We performed studies to address these issues. DESIGN: Observational study of bacterial and viral culture results from hand-contact surfaces of exercise equipment, pre-exercise and postexercise; prospective study of viral culture results before and after intervention with disinfection solution. SETTING: Two fitness centers in a military community. INTERVENTION: One week trial of twice-a-day equipment disinfection. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Type and number of bacteria and type of viruses present on equipment before and after exercise; prevalence of viral culture positivity on equipment before and after intervention. RESULTS: Bacterial cultures of body contact surfaces on equipment revealed benign bacterial species (coagulase-negative staphylococci, diphtheroids, and so forth) but no pathogenic bacteria whether obtained pre-exercise or postexercise, or whether from aerobic versus weight training equipment. Viral cultures revealed the presence of viruses (generally rhinoviruses) on 63 of 100 (63%) hand-contact surfaces of equipment. Weight equipment was significantly more often contaminated than aerobic equipment (73% vs. 51%; P = 0.026). Disinfection of equipment did not lower the prevalence of virus isolation (48% positive before cleaning; 86% positive after cleaning). CONCLUSIONS: There is little risk of exposure to pathogenic bacteria on exercise equipment. Such equipment may commonly serve as fomites for the transmission of viruses. These data do not suggest that disinfection of exercise equipment will offer significant protective effects against virus exposure. 相似文献
