Alveolar hydatid disease of the liver: Brief review and spectrum of adjacent organ invasion

The purpose of this study is to show the spectrum of adjacent organ invasion and to make a brief review of hepatic alveolar hydatid disease (AHD), using CT and MR imaging. We retrospectively reviewed CT and MR images of three patients with various adjacent organ invasions surgically and histologically proven to be AHD. Local invasion to right kidney and adrenal, right hemidiaphragm and lung were detected in one patient, right adrenal in another patient and gall bladder, duodenum, gastric wall and pancreas invasion in the other. AHD may rarely extend to the gall bladder, stomach, duodenum, pancreas, right adrenal and kidney, diaphragm, pleura and lung. The extension of the disease outside the liver is usually encountered in patients with large, peripherally located masses in the advanced stage of the disease.     

Deprivation of form vision suppresses diurnal cycling of retinal levels of leu-enkephalin

Deprivation of form vision by the fitting of translucent occluders suppressed the diurnal cycling of enkephalinergic amacrine cells (the ENSLI amacrine cells), in the chicken. Daily periods of normal vision or enforcing temporal contrast using strobe lighting appeared to restore normal functioning of the ENSLI cells. These results suggest that the ENSLI cells are involved in retinal circuits that assess the quality of the visual image and control eye growth.     

Physical loading and performance as predictors of back pain in healthy adults A 5-year prospective study

We investigated muscle strength, aerobic power, and occupational and leisure-time physical loading as predictors of back pain in a 5-year follow-up study. A cohort of 456 adults aged 25, 35, 45 and 55 years, free of back pain, participated in measurements of anthropometric characteristics, aerobic power and muscle strength characteristics at baseline. The subjects' levels and types of physical activity and occupational physical loading were also determined. At 5 years after the baseline examinations 356 of these subjects (78.1 %) were reached by mail, and 262 of them (73.6%) properly completed and returned a questionnaire including a detailed back pain history for the 5 years following the baseline measurements. Of this number 56 subjects (21 %) who reported back pain ( > 30 on a scale from 0 to 100) and functional impairment during the 5-year follow-up composed the marked back pain group. Other subjects (n = 71, 27%) noting lesser symptoms were included in the mild back pain group; 135 subjects (52%) reported having had no back pain. The subjects with marked back pain were on average taller than the subjects without back pain, while no such difference was found in body mass. Heavy occupational musculoskeletal loading (P = 0.005) and high general occupational physical demands (P = 0.036) predicted future back pain. Leisuretime physical activity, aerobic power or muscle strength characteristics were not predictive of future back pain.     

Evaluation of Pooled and individual components ofBordetella pertussis as antigens in an enzyme immunoassay for diagnosis of pertussis

Six different antigen preparations for use in an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) to detect IgM, IgA and IgG antibodies toBordetella pertussis were evaluated using sera from 13 randomly selected culture-positive patients and from 87 patients with suspected pertussis during a pertussis outbreak. Based on results in 80 healthy control sera a specificity limit of 99.9 % was selected. Sera from all culture-positive patients reacted with at least one of the antigens. The sensitivity of the EIA using the individual antigen preparations was 85 % for filamentous hemagglutinin, 92 % for pertussis toxin, 62 % for 69 kDa outer membrane protein, 85 % for a pool of these three antigens, 54 % for sonicated whole bacteria and 69 % for 21 kDa pertussis toxin subunit S1. In the outbreak patient group 49 (56 %) of the initial sera reacted with at least one of five antigen preparations. The EIA using sonicated bacteria detected only 41 % of all seropositive cases compared with 51 % using filamentous hemagglutinin, 61 % using pertussis toxin, 65 % using 69 kDa OMP and 65 % using pooled antigen. It is concluded that either the pooled antigen or pertussis toxin antigen are suitable antigen preparations for use in the EIA for diagnosis of pertussis.     

Genetic diversity among Mycobacterium avium complex AccuProbe-positive isolates.

The partial 32-kDa-protein gene sequences of 22 Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) clinical isolates that were positive by the AccuProbe MAC probe only (not by the M. avium or M. intracellulare probe) were determined. The obtained nucleotide sequences were compared with the published sequences for M. tuberculosis, M. avium, and M. intracellulare by a sequence analysis program. There was a wide range of genetic diversity among the strains studied. Most of them (16 of 22) had sequences similar but not identical to those of M. avium and M. intracellulare. These strains were considered to be true MAC strains. Five strains had sequences in the category of the novel MAIX sequence, which was very different from the sequences of other mycobacteria analyzed thus far. In addition to these strains, one isolate had a sequence that differed greatly from the reference sequences. These results support previous findings showing that the MAC probably contains several additional species. Our results also suggest that the MAC AccuProbe may react with strains that do not belong to the MAC.     

The influence of bursocytes and thymocytes on graft versus host reaction and IgG level in chickens.

Graft versus host reaction was induced by the blood of chickens previously transferred by the bursa and thymus cells. These bursa and thymus cells were taken from bursectomized or thymectomized chicken. It was occurred that graft versus host reaction was influenced by transfer of bursa and thymus cell. IgG level was affected by the transfer of these cells too.
