Neurosyphilis today is a rare problem. We describe a man who presented with organic brain syndrome, psychosis and incontinence, and diagnosis was neurosyphilis with resultant bladder dysfunction. Urodynamic studies defined the voiding dysfunction as detrusor areflexia with a positive bethanechol test. This case reminds us of the necessity of obtaining a test for venereal disease to rule out neurosyphilis in patients with idiopathic voiding dysfunction.  相似文献

Isolating the color vision loss in primary open-angle glaucoma   总被引:15,自引:0,他引:15  
We evaluated the results of Farnsworth-Munsell 100-Hue tests in age- and lens density-matched eyes of normal subjects, glaucoma suspects, and patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. With these controls in place, no significant correlation between the test results and age or between the test results and lens density was found. However, a significant difference in the total error scores on the 100-Hue test remained. This difference could not be explained by pupil size or medications taken. We concluded that color vision loss in glaucoma is in part attributable to the disease process and cannot be explained solely on the basis of changes in age and lens density.  相似文献

Squamous neoplasms of the female genital tract, including vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia, presumably are derived from a single cell. This study addressed this hypothesis and determined the clonal status of other squamous epithelial alterations associated with vulvar carcinoma, including hyperplasia and lichen sclerosis. X chromosome inactivation patterns of 22 epithelial lesions and matched normal epithelium were determined using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assay targeting the X-linked human androgen receptor gene (HUMARA). Clonality was inferred by comparing matched lesional and control tissues as follows: 1) monoclonal, if intensity of either PCR product was skewed relative to normal reference epithelium (control), 2) polyclonal, if both lesional and control were unskewed, and 3) unknown, if both lesion and control tissues were skewed toward the same allele. Two cases were excluded because of noninformative homozygous HUMARA alleles. Of 8 vulvar intraepithelial neoplasias analyzed, 7 were scored monoclonal and 1 polyclonal. Of 12 hyperplasias, 6 were monoclonal, including one with lichen sclerosis, 2 were polyclonal, and in 4, the clonal status could not be determined. The PCR-based clonal assay supports a monoclonal derivation for vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia and, in some cases, vulvar hyperplasia, and lichen sclerosis. The finding of monoclonal hyperplasia and lichen sclerosis suggests that clonal expansion may evolve before the development of morphological atypia in these epithelia.  相似文献

1. The pharmacological properties of the benzodiazepine receptor ligand, FG 8205 (7-chloro-5,6-dihydro-5-methyl-6-oxo-3-(5-isopropyl-1,2,4-oxadiazol++ +-3-yl)-4H- imidazol[1,5a][1,4]benzodiazepine) have been examined. 2. FG 8205 potently displaced [3H]-flumazenil binding in rat cortical membranes with a Ki of 3.3 nM, but was inactive at 13 neurotransmitter recognition sites. 3. Consistent with a partial agonist profile, the affinity of FG 8205 for the benzodiazepine recognition site was increased in the presence of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA, 300 microM) by a degree (-log [IC50 in the presence of GABA/IC50 alone] = 0.34) significantly less than found for diazepam (0.46). FG 8205 also potentiated the inhibitory potency of the GABAA-receptor agonist, isoguvacine, on the hippocampal CA1 population spike and, again, the maximum shift (-log dose-ratio = 0.2) was significantly less than that seen with diazepam (0.4). 4. In anticonvulsant studies, the ED50 doses of FG 8205 and diazepam needed to antagonize seizures induced by pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) or by sound in audiogenic seizure prone mice were similar with values of 0.2-0.3 mg kg-1, i.p. However, even high doses of FG 8205 (50 mg kg-1) did not protect against seizures induced by electroshock. 5. FG 8205 released responding suppressed by footshock in a rat operant conditioned emotional response task over the dose range 0.5-50 mg kg-1 (i.p.). Children's frequency of consumption of foods high in fat and sodium   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We administered a food frequency instrument to third-fifth grade students (n = 943) in four Texas schools. Comparison of foods reported on the food frequency questionnaire and on 24-hour dietary recalls (n = 7) produced a percent agreement of 83.3. The most frequent 25 foods accounted for 64.0% of food choices across all meals, 93.5% of breakfast choices, 76.4% of lunch choices, 70.5% of supper choices, and 76.0% of snack choices. Breads, milk, hamburger or steak, soda pop, tomato sauce or tomatoes, and cheese were the most frequently consumed foods. Fruits and juices accounted for 6.1% of total selections for boys and 6.6% for girls, while vegetables accounted for 15.7% of total selections for boys and 16.2% for girls. Fruit was more likely to be consumed for snacks than for meals, and vegetables were consumed in about the same frequency at lunch and supper and for snacks. We analyzed the total fat, saturated fat, and sodium content of the most frequently consumed foods. Seventeen of the top 25 foods for the total day and 13-16 for each meal or snack exceeded by at least 50% the recommended levels for fat, saturated fat, or sodium. The pattern of consumption was one of frequent consumption of a relatively small number of foods, many of which are high in fat or sodium.  相似文献

Summary Meiotic progeny of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii normally receive chloroplast genomes only from the mt + parent. However, exceptional zygotes, which transmit the chloroplast genomes of both parents or, more rarely, only those of the mt - parent, arise at a low frequency. Mutations at the mt +-linked mat-3 locus were found previously to elevate the transmission of chloroplast genomes from the mt-parent, resulting in a much higher than normal frequency of exceptional zygotes. In this paper we demonstrate that an ultraviolet-sensitive nuclear mutation mapping at the uvsE1 locus, which is unlinked to mating type, also promotes chloroplast genome transmission from the mt - parent. This mutant, which was previously shown to reduce recombination of nuclear genes in meiosis, acts synergistically which the mat3-3 mutation to produce an extremely high frequency of exceptional zygotes. Through the use of restriction fragment length polymorphisms existing in the chloroplast genomes of C. reinhardtii and the interfertile strain C. smithii, we show that chloroplast DNA fragments from the mt - parent normally begin to disappear shortly after zygote formation. However, this process appears to be blocked totally in the absence of wild-type uvsE1 and mat-3 gene products. Our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that both gene products contribute to the mechanism responsible for uniparental inheritance of the chloroplast genome from the mt + parent.  相似文献

Retrovirus infection is initiated by binding of the viral envelope glycoprotein to a cell-surface receptor. The envelope proteins of type C retroviruses of mammals demonstrate similarities in structural organization and protein sequence. These similarities suggest the possibility that retroviruses from different interference groups might use related proteins as receptors, despite the absence of any relationship between retrovirus receptors isolated to date. To investigate this possibility, we have identified a human cDNA clone encoding a protein closely related to the receptor for gibbon ape leukemia virus and have found that it functions as the receptor for the amphotropic group of murine retroviruses. Expression of this protein (GLVR-2) is likely to be a requirement for infection of human cells by amphotropic retroviral vectors for purposes of gene therapy.  相似文献
