Abstract – The type of liquid medium used to store avulsed teeth prior to replantation has been shown to affect the long‐term prognosis. One possibility is that some storage media contain hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) that may be toxic to periodontal ligament cells. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine if the addition of catalase to storage media improved the prognosis of replanted dog teeth. Forty‐eight mongrel premolar roots were endodontically treated, extracted, randomly divided and placed into one of four storage media: Hank's balanced salt solution (HBSS), containing no antioxidant); Viaspan, containing the antioxidant, glutathione, or the same two media supplemented with catalase(100 U ml?1) for 1, 5, or 26 h prior to replantation. After 2 months, the dogs were euthanized and the roots histologically examined to evaluate the attachment tissues. Regardless of the storage medium used, overall healing was excellent and only 4% of the roots displayed inflammatory or replacement resorption. When roots from the different storage media were compared, those stored in HBSS were found to display the highest incidence of surface resorption (55.7%). Supplementation of HBSS with catalase resulted in a lower level of surface resorption (48.6%) that was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Roots stored in Viaspan – or + catalase displayed even lower levels of surface resorption (41.3 and 38.2%, respectively). The improvement observed with catalase‐supplemented HBSS was confined to the 45‐min incubation period; only Viaspan – or + catalase reduced surface resorption at the 5‐ and 26‐h incubations. Collectively, these data demonstrate that roots stored in media containing antioxidant activity undergo less surface resorption. Oral hairy leukoplakia (OHL) and Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) are commonly encountered in the HIV-infected patient. A unique feature of OHL is non-cytolytic high level of replication of Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) in the glossal epithelium. The expression of viral-encoded anti-apoptotic proteins concomitant to replicative proteins probably underlies this phenomenon. The question of whether OHL arises from activation of EBV latent in the tongue, or from superinfection by endogenous EBV shed via non-glossal sites or by exogenous EBV remains unresolved. Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8) is now seen as necessary but not sufficient cause of KS. Expression of HHV8-encoded oncogenic proteins in endothelial cells probably explains the aberrant proliferation of these cells in KS lesions. Studies into why KS is so commonly observed at the palate in HIV-infected patients may provide important clues to its pathogenesis. 相似文献

Background: Spherophakia is an uncommon diagnosis. This is the first case report of spherophakia evaluated by ultrasound biomicroscopy.
Methods: Ultrasound biomicroscopy is a new diagnostic technique developed by one of the authors and provides images with microscopic resolution of the anterior segment. A patient with spherophakia was evaluated by ultrasound biomicroscopy (Zeiss-Humphrey, 50MHz) before and after YAG laser iridotomy.
Results: Ultrasound biomicroscopic assessment revealed a shallow anterior chamber, a very steep anterior lens curvature, iridolenticular contact, elongated zonules, and an increased distance between the lens equator and the ciliary processes. Angle closure glaucoma was due to a pupil block mechanism. The pupil block was relieved by YAG laser iridotomy.
Conclusions: Ultrasound biomicroscopy is a useful technique to confirm the diagnosis of spherophakia. The pupil block in spherophakia is relieved by YAG laser iridotomy. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine whether timolol maleate (Timoptic) is cytotoxic to the cornea. The drug was applied as topical drops for 1 month to control rabbit eyes and rabbit eyes from which the epithelium had been removed or to de-epithelialized full-thickness autografts. Clinically all corneas and grafts remained clear. Scanning and transmission electronmicroscopy however revealed is drug induced epithelial damage, defective epithelial wound healing, and endothelial changes. CD44 is a family of cell adhesion molecules involved in a variety of cellular functions. The present study analysed the expression
of two CD44 isoforms in serous effusions of patients diagnosed with ovarian carcinoma and corresponding primary and metastatic
lesions. Fifty-eight effusions, 23 primary ovarian tumours, and 44 metastatic lesions were studied for protein expression
of CD44s and v3-10 using immunohistochemistry. Results were correlated with clinical parameters. CD44v3-10 was seen in carcinoma
cells in the majority of cases at all sites. Malignant effusions showed an up-regulation of CD44s compared to both primary
tumours and metastatic solid lesions. Mesothelial cells frequently expressed CD44s, but were rarely immunoreactive for v3-10.
CD44s immunoreactivity in cancer cells in effusions was significantly more often observed in patients with FIGO stage 3 than
in stage 4 patients (P = 0.045). Staining results did not correlate with age, effusion site, metastatic site, tumour grade or residual tumour mass
after initial surgery. Likewise, comparison of overall and disease-free survival with expression of the CD44 isoforms studied
did not reveal any statistically significant associations. The up-regulation in CD44 levels in effusions, primarily in stage
3 disease, suggests that adhesion of ovarian carcinoma cells to mesothelium may be regulated at the level of CD44s expression,
and provides further evidence of phenotypic alteration in the transition from primary tumour cell clones to effusions. The
similar expression profile of CD44 in carcinoma cells in peritoneal and pleural effusions supports our previous observations
and the hypothesis that carcinoma cells in peritoneal effusions are truly metastatic.
