Lower eyelid blepharoplasty: the aging eyelid

The aging process affects the underlying structural integrity of the eyelids as well as the overlying skin, muscle, and fat. Gravitational descent of the deep supporting soft tissues of the eyelid complex coupled with skin texture changes exemplified by loss of skin elasticity, solar actinic changes, and dynamic and static rhytids result in the aged eyelid. Surgery of the lower eyelid on the youthful face usually involves excisional fat sculpting without skin removal. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty performed on the mature face often requires excision of periorbital fat combined with some treatment of the lower eyelid skin. In the aging eyelid, the surgeon must also be prepared to address lower eyelid laxity to prevent the potential complications of lower eyelid retraction or scleral show.     

Humanistic and social education for physicians: the experience of the Colombian School of Medicine

Medical education at the Colombian School of Medicine has undergone a reconceptualization and reorganization so as to encompasses three fundamental elements of medical practice: 1) development of general abilities and standards necessarky for appropriate professional medical practice; 2) technical education which makes it possible to utilize the bases that science and technology have provided for the development and application of knowledge, and in turn, to expand this base through research and development; and 3) humanistic education to guide students into ethical professional practice.     

‘I feel safer in the streets than at home’: Rethinking harm reduction for women in the urban margins

ABSTRACT

Through qualitative data collected with women affected by drug use and drug-related violence in Bogotá, this article explores the convergence of harm reduction rationales and violence prevention programming in the urban margins to advocate for women’s health empowerment and health rights as victims of intergenerational trauma and violence. We propose a methodological shift of public health praxis from street-based outreach models to intimate spaces of intervention for health outcomes embodiment ¹ 1 Drawing from Krieger’s (2004) conceptualisation, we define embodiment as the stories our bodies hold and how they interact with the urban environment. as we continue to develop our community health model to work with marginalised communities in the urban global South. Through this work committed to social justice in marginalised urban communities, we seek to support women’s health needs through harm reduction in historically marginalised communities in urban settings. Our results expose how multi-level gender-based violence affects women’s health in their living spaces in the urban margins. Drawing from women’s voices and narratives of urban violence, we call for a feminist alternative to traditionally masculinist and public-space oriented harm reduction practice for health empowerment in the urban margins.     

Cochlear microcirculation. Effect of adrenergic agonists on arteriole diameter

We used intravital fluorescent microscopy coupled with computerized video image processing to examine the cochlear microvasculature. In Mongolian gerbils the bulla was opened ventrally and a small window was made in the second turn of the cochlea. After fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran administration, the radiating arterioles were video-recorded under X675 magnification. Computer determinations of arteriolar response to norepinephrine bitartrate (mixed alpha 1/alpha 2 agonist), phenylephrine hydrochloride (alpha 1 agonist), and UK 14,304 tartrate (alpha 2 agonist) were made at multiple dose levels over time. Findings were consistent with arteriolar constriction in response to alpha-adrenergic stimulation. The presence of alpha 1 and alpha 2 receptors was established, and a predominance of alpha 2 receptors in the cochlea was suggested.     

Nutritional status, brain development and scholastic achievement of Chilean high-school graduates from high and low intellectual quotient and socio-economic status

The objective of the present study was to investigate the inter-relationships between nutritional status (past and current nutrition), brain development, and scholastic achievement (SA) of Chilean high-school graduates from high and low intellectual quotient (IQ) and socio-economic status (SES) (mean age 18.0 (SD 0.9) years). Results showed that independently of SES, high-school graduates with similar IQ have similar nutritional, brain development and SA variables. Multiple regression analysis between child IQ (dependent variable) and age, sex, SES, brain volume (BV), undernutrition during the first year of life, paternal and maternal IQ (independent variables) revealed that maternal IQ (P<0.0001), BV (P<00387) and severe undernutrition during the first year of life (P<0.0486), were the independent variables with the greatest explanatory power for child IQ variance (r2 0.707), without interaction with age, sex or SES. Child IQ (P<0.0001) was the only independent variable that explained both SA variance (r2 0.848) and academic aptitude test variance (r2 0.876) without interaction with age, sex or SES. These results confirm the hypotheses formulated for this study that: (1) independently of SES, high-school graduates with similar IQ have similar variables of nutritional status, brain development and SA; (2) past nutritional status, brain development, child IQ and SA are strongly and significantly inter-related. These findings are relevant in explaining the complex interactions between variables that affect IQ and SA and can be useful for nutritional and educational planning.
