Objectives: Phase angle (PA) is a poor prognostic factor in patients with advanced cancer. This study aimed to identify possible correlations between PA and symptoms, quality of life, fluid retention, and laboratory data in cancer patients in palliative care settings.
Methods: Individuals who visited the outpatient clinic or were admitted to the palliative care unit were eligible. Patients with a performance status of 4 and/or those unable to complete questionnaires were excluded. PA was evaluated using a bioanalyzer device. The correlation coefficient between PA and the variables of interest was analyzed.
Results: A total of 102 patients were analyzed. PA was weakly correlated with age (ρ = ?0.22), performance status (ρ = ?0.30), functional well-being (ρ?=?0.20), anorexia/cachexia subscale (ρ?=?0.22), and Functional Assessment of Anorexia/Cachexia Therapy trial outcome index (ρ?=?0.26). PA was also correlated with fluid retention (ρ = ?0.34) and albumin (ρ?=?0.32), C-reactive protein (ρ = ?0.31), and hemoglobin (ρ?=?0.41) levels. Sub-analysis stratified according to sex revealed that males demonstrated the same results; however, female sex demonstrated a correlation between PA and social well-being (ρ = ?0.43).
Conclusions: PA was correlated with physical condition, but not with psychological well-being. 相似文献
STUDY OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of small-bore, silastic drains for patients undergoing general thoracic surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-five patients who received soft, small-bore, silastic drains were compared with 17 patients who received semi-rigid double lumen (DL) tubes retrospectively. RESULTS: The pain score was significantly lower in patients who received the silastic tubes in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) cases on postoperative days 5 and 6 , after continuous epidural analgesia had finished (P=0.018). No specific morbidity was seen in the patients who received silastic tubes. CONCLUSION: We considered that soft, small-bore silastic drains were just as effective as traditional DL tubes, but caused less pain especially in VATS cases. 相似文献
The "aperture problem" indicates that a local reading of the velocity of an oriented contour is inherently ambiguous, insufficient by itself to recover the velocity of image points. In Wallach's "barber pole" display consisting of moving diagonal lines within an elongated rectangular aperture, it has been suggested that the unambiguous motion of edge-terminators along the longer edges of the aperture propagates towards the motion-ambiguous center part of drifting stripes. This results in the perception of a surface moving in the direction of the longer axis of the aperture. By manipulating the stereoscopic disparity of a striped pattern relative to the aperture plane, we found that the disambiguating effects of terminators could be abolished if the striped pattern was in uncrossed disparity relative to the aperture plane. Also, the motion in 3 separate horizontally oriented, and vertically aligned apertures which would otherwise be seen as moving horizontally, was seen as "linked" together and moving vertically. This occurred only when the horizontally oriented segments separating these apertures were stereoscopically coded so that they appeared as occluders in front. These findings suggest that accidental or "extrinsic" terminators created by occluding edges are treated differently from real or "intrinsic" terminators, and that the real-world constraint of occlusion is thus implemented in the ambiguity-solving processes for motion. 相似文献
A clonal rat embryo cell line, 3Y1, was transformed by the HindIII-I·J fragment of adenovirus 7 DNA (left 8.1% of whole Adz DNA), one of the partial digestion products with HindIII, and by whole Ad7 DNA. Most, if not all, of the nucleotide sequences of the HindIII-I·J fragment were present in cells transformed by Ad7 HindIII-I·J fragment, whereas approximately the left two thirds of the viral DNA genome was present in cells transformed by Ad7 whole DNA. These results indicate that the transforming gene of adenovirus 7 is located in HindIII-I·J fragment and is mapped at the left 8% end of the adenovirus 7 genome. 相似文献
To study cow’s milk allergy at the cellular level, we assessed the reactivity of peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients allergic to cow’s milk to αs1-casein, which is one of the major allergens in cow’s milk. Proliferation of the cells to αs1-casein activation showed a rather weak response. Therefore to understand T-cell reactivity to αs1-casein in more detail, we prepared αs1-casein–specific T-cell lines from patients allergic to cow’s milk and established 26 T-cell lines. These T-cell lines could be classified into three groups by analyzing their surface marker expression: those containing predominantly CD4+CD8- T cells, those containing both CD4+CD8- and CD4-CD8+ T cells, and those containing predominantly CD4-CD8+ T cells. The CD8+ T cells were obtained at an unexpectedly higher frequency from the patients. These T-cell lines produced interferon-γ and IL-4. These results suggest that CD8+ T cells specific for αs1-casein and CD4+ T cells were primed by the stimulation with αs1-casein in patients allergic to milk and that both T cells may play a key role in the onset, progression of, or recovery from cow’s milk allergy. Pointing movements made with a hidden cursor from the center of gaze to a stationary, visible target overshot the actual target location. The systematic error decreased when the final cursor location from the previous trial was shown, which likely led to the creation of an internal sensorimotor model of movement. However, the putative model had a short memory, and could not substitute for on-line visuomotor feedback on subsequent trials. Contrary to common belief, the effect of a lack of visuomotor feedback was seen even in the early acceleration stage of the movement trajectory. Unchecked in the absence of visual monitoring, the acceleration stage of the movement lasted longer, as was evidenced by the significantly larger value of the peak cursor speed. Moreover, the speed peaked much later in the course of the movement. Speed declined more rapidly thereafter. Consequently, the delayed deceleration stage lasted far less than the acceleration stage. In the absence of visual feedback, the shift rightward in time of the peak speed position (PSP) in relation to total movement duration and other changes in the trajectory imply that visual feedback must play a significant role in determining when acceleration ceases (d V/d t=0), and argue against the traditional notion that visuomotor feedback is unavailable until the later stages of movement. Moreover, our data suggest that non-visual modalities, e.g., proprioception, may be too slow to make up for the absence of vision. 相似文献
We established a thyroglobulin (Tg)-specific, thyroiditis-inducing T-cell clone, B12G, from B6C3F1 mice by the immunization of mouse Tg with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Klebsiella strain LEN (O3:K1). B12G was Thy-1.2+, CD3+, CD4+, CD18+, and CD8-, and could transfer thyroiditis to recipient mice after in vitro stimulation with mouse or bovine Tg. Histological examination showed severe thyroiditis with predominant infiltrations of polymorphonuclear cells; few mononuclear cells were observed. B12G proliferated in response to bovine, mouse, porcine, and rat Tg in the presence of irradiated spleen cells, but did not respond to chicken or human Tg. H-2b, a low-responder haplotype of experimental autoimmune thyroiditis, governed the response of the clone to Tg. B12G produced interleukin-4 (IL-4) and IL-6, but not IL-2 or interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), on stimulation with mouse Tg. These findings were different from characteristics of previously reported Tg-specific T-cell clones from high-responder mice in terms of epitope specificity and cytokine production pattern, raising the possibility that the specificities and functions of T cells involved in the development of autoimmune thyroiditis in low-responder mice differ from those in high responders. 相似文献
Spinocerebellar ataxia 27 (SCA27) is an autosomal dominant SCA caused by variants in the fibroblast growth factor 14 (FGF14) gene. We examined a Japanese SCA patient whose deceased father also suffered from SCA. The patient was a 63-year-old male. He graduated from junior high school but received no further education. The predominant complaint was slowly progressive dysarthria and gait disturbance, which appeared at age 47. He showed pathological saccadic dysmetria, saccadic intrusions into smooth pursuit eye movements, dysarthria, and limb and truncal ataxia. His gait was wide-based but he did not require a walking stick. Limb muscle strength was intact. Deep tendon reflexes were normal or slightly reduced. Pathological reflexes were absent. He demonstrated mildly impaired vibration sense in the lower limbs. There was no urinary dysfunction. Brain MRI showed cerebellar atrophy without brainstem involvement. We first confirmed the absence of repeat expansion in genes known to be responsible for SCAs 1–3, 6–8, 10, 12, 17, 36 and dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy. By exome analysis, we identified a novel heterozygous variant (NM_004115, c.529A>T; Lys177X) in exon 4 of the FGF14 gene. This variant is expected to generate a truncated FGF14 protein lacking the heparin binding sites, those are likely to modify the activity of FGF14. We confirmed the absence of the variant in 502 healthy Japanese individuals by Sanger sequencing. There is no record of the variant in public databases. We conclude that the novel variation in FGF14 is causative for SCA27 in this patient. 相似文献
A surface occluding a more distant surface gives rise to interocularly unpaired regions to its immediate left and right. The unpaired region on the left side is visible only to the left eye, whereas that on the right side is visible only to the right eye. Thus for real world scenes there are opto-geometrical constraints which determine whether particular combinations of relative depth and right-eye-only or left-eye-only stimuli are ecologically valid or invalid. We report a demonstration and experiments to show that opto-geometrically "valid" unpaired regions are seen as continuous with the rear plane and escape interocular suppression, whereas "invalid" unpaired regions are perceived as closer and are suppressed vigorously. An additional experiment indicates that the results cannot be understood in terms of correspondence solving, but require neural mechanisms that embody real-world occlusion constraints. These results suggest a rather close interaction between stereopsis and rivalry "modules". Since explicit eye-of-origin information is lost relatively early in the hierarchical organization of cortical visual processing, we argue that occlusion-related constraints must be embodied at such early levels. 相似文献
