OBJECTIVE: To compare in vivo bitewing film quality using the holder versus the paper loop technique. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Four bitewing films were taken from the right and left premolar and molar regions of 45 dental students using both the bitewing holder and paper loop techniques. A total of 360 films were taken and assessed by an experienced practitioner not apprised of the bitewing technique used. Of interest were: (1) the number of overlaps and the percentage of teeth showing the alveolar crest; (2) proper film positioning; and (3) the percentage of cone cutting. A Poisson regression using generalized estimating equations (GEEs) was used to estimate the difference in overlap between the two techniques. For proper positioning and cone cutting, logistic regressions using GEEs were used. RESULTS: The average number of horizontal overlaps for the loop and holder techniques at the right premolar, right molar, left premolar, and left molar were 1.64, 2.11, 2.16, 2.78, and 1.64, 2.00, 2.00, 2.18, respectively. The loop technique was 1.11 times more likely to cause overlapping than the holder technique. The highest percentage of teeth showing the alveolar crest by the loop technique was 97.8% in the mandibular second premolar and first molar. With respect to film positioning, the loop technique was 1.12 times more likely to cause improper positioning than the holder technique. Both techniques demonstrated minimal cone cutting (1 in the loop versus 0 in the holder). CONCLUSION: The quality of bitewing films taken by the loop and holder techniques was not significantly different.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Immune hemolytic anemia has been associated with the administration of various antibiotics, including cephalosporins. Presented here is a patient who developed severe acute hemolysis while receiving ceftizoxime (Ceftizox, Fujisawa USA), a third-generation cephalosporin. This is the fourth reported case of hemolysis in association with ceftizoxime. In the previous cases, ceftizoxime was shown to induce hemolysis by the immune-complex mechanism. However, in one of those reports, the concentration of drug used to treat the target RBCs in vitro may not have been optimal. CASE REPORT: The patient's antemortem blood samples were analyzed retrospectively for drug-dependent antibodies by the drug-adsorption and immune-complex methods. Antibody class and titer were evaluated. RESULTS: The patient's sample agglutinated RBCs coated with ceftizoxime as well as uncoated RBCs in the presence of ceftizoxime. The antibodies to ceftizoxime were IgM and IgG. CONCLUSION: This is the first report on both the immune-complex and drug-adsorption mechanisms of ceftizoxime-induced hemolysis. The differential diagnosis of a falling Hct in a patient receiving antibiotics should include drug-related hemolysis; once this diagnosis is considered, management includes the appropriate serologic workup, immediate cessation of the implicated drugs, and possible transfusion support.  相似文献

Iron oxide (Fe2O3) thin films are promising semiconductors for electronic applications because Fe2O3 is an earth-abundant semiconductor with an appropriate band gap. However, many methods for the synthesis of Fe2O3 thin films require a corrosive source, complex procedures, and many types of equipment. Here, we report, for the first time, a simple method for Fe2O3 deposition using sparking under a uniform magnetic field. The morphology of Fe2O3 displayed an agglomeration of particles with a network-like structure. The crystallite size, % Fe content, and optical bandgap of Fe2O3 were influenced by changes in the magnitude of the magnetic field. For application in humidity sensors, Fe2O3 at a magnetic field of 200 mT demonstrated a sensitivity of 99.81%, response time of 0.33 s, and recovery time of 2.57 s. These results can provide references for new research studies.

The mud crab, Scylla olivacea, is a high value economic marine animal in Thailand. However, collection of these crabs from natural habitat for local consumption and export has caused rapid population decline. Hence, aquaculture of this species is required and to this measure understanding of endocrine control of their reproduction must be understood. Egg laying hormone (ELH) is a neuropeptide synthesized by the bag cells (neurons) in the abdominal ganglia of Aplysia gastropods. It plays a critical role in controlling egg production and laying in gastropods, and its possible homolog (ELH-like peptide) was reported in the neural and ovarian tissues of prawns and recently in female reproductive tract of the blue swimming crab, Portunus pelagicus. In this study, we have studied the histology of the male reproductive tract in Scylla olivacea which are comprised of anterior testis, posterior testis, early proximal spermatic duct (ePSD), proximal spermatic duct (PSD), middle spermatic duct (MSD) and distal spermatic duct (DSD), by immunohistochemistry, detected an abalone ELH- immunoreactivity (aELH-ir) in epithelium of ducts in posterior testis and epithelium of all parts of spermatic duct. Furthermore, we could detect aELH-ir in neurons of cluster 9, 11, olfactory neuropil (ON) in the brain and in the small neurons located between the third and the fourth thoracic neuropils (T3-T4) and between the fourth and the fifth thoracic neuropils (T4-T5) of thoracic ganglia. Thus, the presence of aELH in male S. olivacea was designated the role of female egg laying behavior in the male mud crab.  相似文献

Platelet accumulation in glomerular capillaries (GC) and peritubular capillaries (PC) has pathogenetic importance in antibody-mediated hyperacute renal allograft rejection. CD61 is expressed constitutively by platelets, by platelet microparticles arising from platelet activation, and is readily detectable by immunohistochemistry. This study examined the immunohistochemical localization of CD61 in acute humoral rejection (AHR) of renal allografts to explore the relationship of platelet accumulation to antibody-mediated rejection. Two observers graded the extent of CD61 staining in PC and GC from 0 (none) to 2+ (>50%) in 15 renal allograft biopsy specimens with AHR and compared these with tissues from allografts with acute cellular rejection (ACR) (n = 23); acute calcineurin inhibitor toxicity (ACIT) (n = 21) with thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) (n = 11) and tubular toxicity only (n = 10); acute tubular necrosis (ATN) (n = 16); acute renal vein thrombosis (RVT) (n = 4); and histologically unremarkable native kidneys (n = 26). Selected tissues were examined by electron microscopy and stained for CD34 by immunohistochemistry. Histologically unremarkable native kidney tissues had CD61 only in scattered small lumenal granules in GC and PC. Mural and occlusive lumenal CD61 deposits (>0.5+) were observed in 13 of 13 (100%) allograft tissues with GC thrombi due to AHR (1) and ACIT TMA (9) and RVT (3). Twenty-seven of 66 allografts (40.9%) without glomerular thrombi had >0.5+ GC CD61 in AHR (60%), ACR (26%), tubular ACIT (60%), and ATN (44%). More than trace (>0.5+) PC mural and lumenal CD61 deposits were seen only in AHR (53.3%) and ACR (30%). PC CD61 correlated with interstitial hemorrhage (r = 0.64), neutrophilic capillaritis (r = 0.47), and interstitial inflammation (r = 0.47) (P <0.001 for each). PC CD61 was observed in 11 of 11 foci of necrosis due to AHR, RVT, and ischemia. In AHR, capillaries with CD61 deposits had few platelets, numerous microvesicles and membrane fragments, severe endothelial injury seen on electron microscopy, and reduced capillary CD34 expression. CD61 detection by immunohistochemistry revealed products of capillary platelet activation in allograft biopsy specimens without light microscopic thrombi. Observations in this study suggest that intracapillary platelet activation occurs in response to graft capillary injury from many causes and may not be specific for antibody-mediated rejection.  相似文献
