Recycled rubber waste (RW) is produced at an alarming rate due to the deposition of 1.5 billion scrap tires annually around the globe, which causes serious threats to the environment due to its open land filling issues. This study investigates the potential application of RW in concrete structures for mitigating the alkali–silica reaction (ASR). Various proportions of RW (5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%) partially replaced the used aggregates. RW was procured from a local rubber recycling unit. Cubes, prisms, and mortar bar specimens were prepared using a mixture design recommended by ASTM C1260 and tested for evaluating the compressive and flexural strengths and expansion in an ASR conducive environment for specimens incorporating RW. It was observed that the compressive and flexural strength decreased for specimens incorporating RW compared to that of the control specimens without RW. For example, an 18% and an 8% decrease in compressive and flexural strengths, respectively, were observed for specimens with 5% of RW by aggregates volume at 28 days. Mortar bar specimens without RW showed an expansion of 0.23% and 0.28% at 14 and 28 days, respectively, indicating the potential ASR reactivity in accordance with ASTM C1260. A decrease in expansion was observed for mixtures incorporating RW. Specimens incorporating 20% of RW by aggregate volume showed expansions of 0.17% at 28 days, within the limit specified by ASTM C1260. Moreover, specimens incorporating RW showed a lower reduction in compressive and flexural strengths under an ASR conducive environment compared to that of the control specimen without RW. Micro-structural analysis also showed significant micro-cracking for specimens without RW due to ASR. However, no surface cracks were observed for specimens incorporating RW. It can be argued that the use of RW in the construction industry assists in reducing the landfill depositing issues with the additional benefit of limiting the ASR expansion.  相似文献

ContextArtocarpus lakoocha Roxb. (Moraceae) is reported to possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-skin ageing agents.ObjectiveThis study evaluates the pharmacological effects of A. lakoocha leaves methanol extract on enzymes involved in the cholesterol synthesis pathway in high-fat diet-induced hyperlipidemic rats.Materials and methodsTwenty-four male Wistar rats, weighing approximately 180–220 g, were divided into four groups: control, diseased (hyperlipidemic), A. lakoocha leaves extract treated, and simvastatin treated. The rats were fed with high-fat diet for 2 months to induce hyperlipidaemia, afterward, experimental groups received A. lakoocha leaves methanol extract (250 mg/kg) and simvastatin (10 mg/kg) orally until the 89th day of the experiment, while the diseased group continued to receive high-fat diet along with normal saline.ResultsIt was found that A. lakoocha extract significantly lowered the serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels, while effectively increasing serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels as compared to the diseased group (p ≤ 0.05). The mRNA expression levels of squalene synthase and HMG-CoA reductase were found to be effectively down-regulated after the treatment with A. lakoocha leaves extract (17.45 ± 2.48 vs. 31.91 ± 5.292 and 5.85 ± 3.164 vs. 37.37 ± 6.492) and simvastatin (7.148 ± 0.76 vs. 31.91 ± 5.292, and 3.098 ± 2.09 vs. 37.37 ± 6.492) as compared to the diseased group.Discussion and ConclusionsThe results suggested that A. lakoocha leaves extract have observable beneficial effects on inhibition of enzymes involved in cholesterol synthesis pathway and improve lipid profile analogous to simvastatin.  相似文献

Rational modification of molecular structure by incorporating electron donating groups can play a potential role for designing aggregation induced emission (AIE) active fluorescent probes. Based on this principle, fluorescent probes (1a–c) were synthesized, and they displayed excellent aggregation induced emission (AIE) behavior in a H2O/DMF (4 : 1, v/v) mixture due to restrictions in intramolecular charge transfer (ICT). As a comparison, probe 1d was synthesized by installing an electron withdrawing (–NO2) group that surprisingly quenched the aggregation behaviour. Additionally, AIE active probes 1a–c displayed a highly sensitive dual channel (fluorometric and colorimetric) response towards rapid detection of CN, which is an active toxic material. Probes 1a–c showed selectively enhanced fluorescence emission behavior towards CN with detection limits of 1.34 ppb, 1.38 ppb, and 1.54 ppb, respectively. The sensing mechanism involves Michael type adduct formation due to the nucleophilic addition reaction of cyanide with probes and was confirmed through 1H NMR titration experiments. In contrast, probe 1d containing an electron withdrawing moiety showed insensitivity towards CN. Therefore, this study provides the efficient strategy to induce AIE character in fluorescent probes and expands the mechanistic approach toward the sensing of toxic CN.
