Facial motion is a primary source of social information about other humans. Prior fMRI studies have identified regions of the superior temporal sulcus (STS) that respond specifically to perceived face movements (termed fSTS), but little is known about the nature of motion representations in these regions. Here we use fMRI and multivoxel pattern analysis to characterize the representational content of the fSTS. Participants viewed a set of specific eye and mouth movements, as well as combined eye and mouth movements. Our results demonstrate that fSTS response patterns contain information about face movements, including subtle distinctions between types of eye and mouth movements. These representations generalize across the actor performing the movement, and across small differences in visual position. Critically, patterns of response to combined movements could be well predicted by linear combinations of responses to individual eye and mouth movements, pointing to a parts‐based representation of complex face movements. These results indicate that the fSTS plays an intermediate role in the process of inferring social content from visually perceived face movements, containing a representation that is sufficiently abstract to generalize across low‐level visual details, but still tied to the kinematics of face part movements.  相似文献

Hyperparathyroidism is associated with impaired glucose tolerance, and parathyroidectomy may improve carbohydrate homeostasis. It has been suggested that parathyroid hormone (PTH) suppresses insulin secretion but it is unclear whether it also interferes with the peripheral action of insulin. To evaluate in vivo effects of PTH on insulinmediated glucose utilization, 15 male Sprague Dawley rats were continuously infused with rat PTH (1–34) using an Alzet miniosmotic pump at a rate of 0.03 nm/hour. Controls were infused with the vehicle alone. Following 5 days of PTH infusion, plasma calcium (Ca) levels were higher in the PTH-infused rats (12.3±0.2 versus 9.9±0.1 mg/dl, P<0.01). On the 5th day, glucose (700 mg/kg) and insulin (0.175 U/kg) were given as a bolus infusion through the left femoral vein, blood samples were obtained from the right femoral vein, and plasma glucose and insulin were measured at basal (0 minutes) and at 2, 5, 10, and 20 minutes postinfusion. Basal, nonfasting glucose levels were higher (166±4 versus 155±4 mg/dL, P<0.04) in the PTH-infused rats but their insulin levels were similar to those of controls (6.5±0.6 versus 5.6 ±0.5 ng/ml). Postinfusions and maximal (2 minutes) glucose and insulin levels were similar in both groups. However, although insulin levels were similar in both groups at all measured time points, glucose levels at 20 minutes were higher in the PTH-treated rats (205±13 versus 173±9; P<0.03). Also, calculated glucose disappearance rates (Kg) were decreased in the PTH-infused rats (4.05±0.3 versus 4.63±0.8; P=0.054), suggesting an impaired peripheral effect of insulin on glucose utilization. To gain insight into the potential contribution of the hypercalcemia or the PTH to these abnormalities, correlation evaluations were performed. Only in PTH-infused rats did plasma Ca correlate with plasma glucose at 0 and 20 minutes (r=0.6, P=0.02; r=0.7, P=0.01) and with the area under the glucose curve (r=0.6, P=0.03) during the glucose-insulin infusion. Also only in PTH-infused rats did PTH correlate with 0 (P=0.07) and 20-minute (P=0.02) plasma glucose levels. There was no correlation between either Ca or PTH and basal insulin levels or the area under the insulin curve in either group. Consequently, we suggest that in the rat, PTH infusion associated with hypercalcemia impairs insulin effect on glucose utilization in vivo and this defect may be induced by the Ca, PTH, or both.This study was presented in part at the 76th Annual Meeting of the Endocrine Society, Anaheim, CA, USA, June 1994.  相似文献

Patients with hyperparathyroidism appear to be a particular risk for peptic ulcer disease. To test the hypothesis that hypercalcemia or parathyroid hormone plays a role in promoting ulcer disease, we studied the effect of varying concentrations of extracellular calcium on acid secretion using in vitro isolated rabbit gastric glands. Acid secretion was assessed by the accumulation of carbon 14-labeled aminopyrine (14C-AP). Glands were incubated with varying calcium concentrations in the unstimulated state and with histamine or carbachol (10(-7) to 10(-4) mol/L) in 1 or 2 mmol/L calcium medium. The effect of parathyroid hormone was also examined under identical conditions. Compared to 1 mmol/L standard calcium medium, unstimulated 14C-AP accumulation was significantly inhibited (p less than 0.05) at both lower (0.33 mmol/L) and higher (2 and 2.5 mmol/L) calcium concentrations. Accumulation of 14C-AP in response to histamine stimulation was unaffected by alteration of extracellular calcium (p greater than 0.2). Carbachol-stimulated 14C-AP accumulation was significantly augmented (p less than 0.01) by an increase in calcium concentration from 1 to 2 mmol/L. The addition of parathyroid hormone (10(-7) to 10(-4) mmol/L) alone or in combination with carbachol or histamine (10(-6) mmol/L) incubation did not alter 14C-AP accumulation. These data suggest that elevations in extracellular calcium play an active role in the potentiation of cholinergic-mediated gastric gland acid secretion and may thereby play a role in hyperparathyroid-related ulcer disease.  相似文献

The response to induction chemotherapy is an important prognostic factor in patients with nonmetastatic, locally advanced breast carcinomas. Assessment at mammography of the response of 60 breast cancers in 59 women was performed between 1974 and 1986. Responses were excellent in 13 tumors, moderate in 34, and poor in 13 (excellent moderate = 78%). Assessment of response of discrete masses in a fatty breast was easiest; assessment of response of tumor areas that were poorly defined-such as a focal area of architectural distortion or mass in dense breast parenchyma-was more difficult. Of 17 patients with excellent pathologic responses-that is, minimal or no residual tumor-15 (88%) had complete responses (no residual tumor) as determined with mammography, physical examination, or both. Mammography provides information complementary to physical examination and is essential in the accurate assessment of the response to chemotherapy of locally advanced breast cancer.  相似文献

Donor insemination (DI) using cryopreserved semen commenced at The Royal Women's Hospital in 1976. Over the next 15 years we performed 5953 treatment cycles to achieve 816 pregnancies (13.7% per cycle) and 706 live births. In-vitro fertilization (IVF) using donor spermatozoa commenced in 1986. Over the next 5 years we performed 303 treatment cycles for 185 couples. Including subsequent transfer of cryopreserved embryos, a total of 33% of couples achieved a successful pregnancy by IVF. Statistical analysis indicated that, for DI pregnancies, the most important semen variable was the percentage post-thaw motility, whilst for normal fertilization in IVF it was the pre-freeze motility. These results may be explained by the compensatory effects of post-thaw processing of spermatozoa for IVF, but not for DI in our clinic.   相似文献

Objective

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) present systemic inflammation. Strenuous resistive breathing induces systemic inflammation in healthy subjects. We hypothesized that the increased respiratory load that characterizes COPD can contribute to systemic inflammation in these patients.

Patients and methods

To test this hypothesis, we compared leukocyte numbers and levels of circulating cytokines (tumor necrosis factor alpha [TNFα], interleukin-1β [IL-1β], IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10), before and 1 hour after maximal incremental inspiratory loading in 13 patients with stable COPD (forced expiratory volume in one second [FEV1] 29 ± 2.5% ref) and in 8 healthy sedentary subjects (FEV1 98 ± 5% ref).

Results

We found that: (1) at baseline, patients with COPD showed higher leukocyte counts and IL-8 levels than controls (p < 0.01); and, (2) one hour after maximal inspiratory loading these values were unchanged, except for IL-10, which increased in controls (p < 0.05) but not in patients with COPD.

Conclusions

This study confirms the presence of systemic inflammation in COPD, shows that maximal inspiratory loading does not increase the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-8) in COPD patients or controls, but suggests that the former may be unable to mount an appropriate systemic anti-inflammatory response to exercise.  相似文献

Diffuse large B‐cell lymphoma (DLBCL) occasionally presents with circulating malignant cells. The clinical characteristics and long‐term outcomes of these patients have not been described. Twenty‐nine newly diagnosed DLBCL presenting in leukaemic phase were identified between 1996 and 2010, at two institutions. Median age was 48 years, and patients presented with leucocytosis, high lactate dehydrogenase levels, B symptoms, and high International Prognostic Index score. Extra nodal site involvement was observed in all patients and affected the bone marrow (100%), spleen (62%), pleura/lung (41%), liver (21%), bone (17%), bowels (7%) and cerebrospinal fluid (14%). Blood lymphomatous cells co‐expressed CD19, CD20, CD22, CD38, CD45, HLA‐DR and FMC7 in >90%, and kappa or lambda light chain restriction in >50%. Ninety per cent received rituximab and anthracycline‐based chemotherapy. Overall, remission was complete in 54% and partial in 31%; 15% had resistant disease. Median follow‐up was 47 months; 13 (45%) patients remain alive in complete remission. Median progression‐free and overall survivals were 11·5 and 46·7 months, respectively. In summary, patients with DLBCL in leukaemic phase present with high tumour burden and frequent involvement of extra nodal sites. In this uncommon DLBCL subgroup, anthracycline‐based regimens with rituximab are associated with early morbidity and mortality, but yield approximately 50% 4‐year survival.  相似文献
