Content of HSP70 in rats with hereditary stress-induced arterial hypertension

Sensitivity of normotensive Wistar rats and NISAG rats (with hereditary arterial hypertension) to heat stress is compared at the organism and cell levels. High temperature sensitivity of NISAG rats correlates with a low content of the main heat shock protein HSP70. This relationship can serve as a biochemical marker of predisposition to arterial hypertension. Blood pressure and excretion of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium in 8- and 9-year old boys from 19 European centres

We have measured systolic and diastolic blood pressure and excretions of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium in groups of about 50 8- and 9-year-old boys from 19 European centres using standardized methods for the measurement of blood pressure and collection of urine, and by carrying out all analyses in one laboratory. Weight, height, pulse rate and environmental temperature were also studied. Mean systolic blood pressure ranged from 91 to 105 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure from 51 to 66 mm Hg. Mean 24-h excretion of sodium was between 91 and 146 mmol/d, that of potassium between 29 and 60 mmol/d, that of calcium between 1.5 and 2.6 mmol/d and that of magnesium between 2.7 and 4.2 mmol/d. Mean sodium excretion tended to be lower and potassium excretion tended to be higher in the boys from the north-western parts of Europe. Relations between either systolic or diastolic blood pressure and electrolyte excretions were generally weak or absent. Most remarkable is that only the association between mean diastolic blood pressure and 24-h magnesium excretion (partial regression coefficient (b +/- s.e., -5.04 +/- 2.08 mm Hg/mmol/d) was statistically significant after adjusting for differences in creatinine excretion and environmental temperature. Mean systolic blood pressure was not significantly related with any of the variables measured. The partial regression coefficient (b +/- s.e.) for diastolic blood pressure on weight was 0.186 +/- 0.062 mm Hg/kg, on height 0.165 +/- 0.056 mm Hg/cm, on pulse rate 0.364 +/- 0.100 mm Hg/beats per min and on outside temperature -0.25 +/- 0.07 mm Hg/degrees C.     

Ex vivo removal of IgE in atopic asthma by extracorporeal plasmoimmunoadsorption (EPIA): development of a clinical adsorbent

We have developed an immunoadsorbent (IA) for ex vivo removal of IgE after in vitro screening of matrix (Sepharose and tresyl-activated Toyopearl) and ligand (monospecific rabbit polyclonal anti-IgE antiserum and monoclonal antibodies (Abs) or their Fab fragments). Specific adsorptive capacity (SAC) for IgE was maximal in Sepharose-based IA with both types of Abs. Fab-containing IA on Sepharose retained 70-90% of the SAC of native Ab-containing IA. Toyopearl-based IA showed comparable SAC under static conditions but worked unsatisfactorily under continuous flow conditions. To assess the complement-activating capacity (CAC) of IA in vitro anaphylatoxin (C3a, C4a, C5a) generation was applied. CAC was directly related with the amount of immobilized Ab ligand, without depending on Ab specific activity. Fab-containing IA showed more CAC than native Ab-containing IA, and polyclonal IA more than monoclonal IA. Therefore, IA for IgE apheresis were prepared from native monoclonal Abs and CNBr-activated Sepharose CL 4B under aseptic conditions and packed into a glass column. This IA was used in 17 clinical IgE apheresis treatments of five atopic asthma patients. No substantial side effects were observed; in vivo IA effectively removed IgE from plasma (83 to 98%).     

Potassium and sodium ions in the nerve tissue of emotionally overstrained rabbits

Measurement of K⁺ and Na⁺ concentrations in samples of individual brain nuclei and in ganglia of the autonomic nervous system from rabbits subjected to severe emotional stress (ES) through aperiodic stimulation of ventromedial hypothalamic nuclei and electrocutaneous stimulation revealed significantly altered levels of these ions in locus ceruleus samples from animals predisposed to ES-induced cardiovascular disorders and in samples of neurons of the caudal part of the brainstem from those resistant to such disorders. Experience in the organization of heart surgery services to patients with disorders of heart rhythm and conduction in large cities

The article generalizes 17-year experience in the organization of surgical service for patients with disturbed rhythm and conductivity of the heart in Leningrad and the northwest region of the USSR. The work of the city center of surgery of arrhythmias is analysed. Prospective calculations were made. Basically new approaches to determining the regular number of persons on the staff and the number and type or operative interventions are suggested.     

Cytologic diagnosis of metastases of stomach cancer during laparoscopy

The detection of gastric carcinoma metastases to the peritoneum necessitates the development of a specific treatment strategy. The present paper reviews the results of analyses of ascitic fluid and impressions obtained in laparoscopy from 42 patients. Eighty-one investigations have been carried out. Malignant cells have been detected in 93.1% of impressions and in 50% of ascites. Three types of mesothelial cells are described, all of them present both in the impressions and in the fluid. Type I cells are more incident in proliferation of the mesothelial cells. They are often similar to adenocarcinoma cells as regards their chromatin structure, hyperchromatism, eccentric position of the nucleus, and cytoplasmic basophilia. In distinction from the adenocarcinoma cells, the mesothelial cells are monomorphous and are much smaller. Type I mesothelial cells differ from signet ring cell carcinoma in the following: nuclear hyperchromatism in mesothelial cells is combined with cytoplasmic basophilia, whereas in signet ring cells a colorless vacuole occupies the whole of the cytoplasm in case of a hyperchromatic eccentric nucleus.
