Synthesis and the Antiinflammatory Activity of New N-Acyl-5-Bromanthranilamides

Nineteen N-acyl-5-bromanthranilic acid amides were synthesized via acylation of 5-bromanthranilamide with suitable anhydrides. The antimicrobial activity of the synthesized compounds with respect to Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was evaluated. Compounds with diphenyl, furoyl, and tetrachlorophthalyl moieties in the acyl part of the molecule showed significant inhibition of microbial growth. The minimum inhibiting concentrations of this compounds were 15.6 μg/ml against S. aureus and 15.6 – 31 μg/ml against E. coli. Pathomorphologic verification of the prenatal diagnosis of developmental defects in trimester II fetuses]

153 foetuses were studied obtained after the artificial abortion for genetical indications. The scheme of the material investigation is given. Isolated, systemic and multiple defects were found in 39.0, 12.1 and 48.9%, respectively, and the contribution of the syndrome forms in the multiple developmental disturbances was 60.9%. The interruption of the pregnancy in 2% of cases was assessed as unfounded: as a consequence of hyperdiagnosis and in cases of treatable defects. The frequency of the discrepancy between prenatal and pathology diagnoses was 31.8% including hyperdiagnosis of the defect (1.3%), nosological disagreement (13.3%), the lack of diagnosis of the additional defects detectable during II trimester by present ultrasound methods (17.2%). The efficacy of the work of the prenatal diagnostic centre is, according to the authors, the number of justified interruptions of pregnancy (98% in this study).     

Ability of microflora to multiply on polymer materials used in hermetically sealed compartments

The main representatives of human auto-microflora were examined to identify the microorganisms that can grow and develop on various polymers used in an enclosed interior. Bacteria of the Genera Pseudomonas, Proteus and Bacillus were found to be most proliferative. Microbial growth was strongly influenced by environmental parameters of the enclosure and by the chemical structure of the polymer.     

Is handedness related to health status?

Handedness is the most important behavioural asymmetry due to its intimate association with the specialisation of the brain for language. It exists in 3 forms, namely right, left and mixed. Left-handers constitute the biggest minority group in the world and in many aspects they are in a disadvantaged position compared to right-handers. Numerous studies demonstrated association between left-handedness and different health problems ranging from learning disorders to breast cancer and decreased longevity. This paper reviews the relevant literature on the genesis of handedness and connection between handedness and health. Deviations from the “normal” pattern of braininess observed in some left-handers might contribute to developmental, cognitive and some mental disorders. However increased incidence of some of pathological conditions among sinistrals could hardly be explained by the “abnormal” pattern of braininess or by the action of a gene or genes responsible for handedness determination. Review of literature suggests that many of health problems of left-handers develop due to environmental, developmental and other mechanisms related to genesis of handedness.     

The system of designation of surgical suture materials

The authors suggest a unified system of designation of type--sizes of surgical suture materials of various nature and structure, which removes the existing discrepancy between the numbering of foreign and Soviet threads as well as of Soviet threads produced by different enterprises of the country. Introduction of the new system of metric sizes of the suture threads will allow surgeons to be properly orientated in the choice of the necessary suture material and make easier the work of services engaged in the development and realization of surgical suture materials.
