DNA methylation as an etiologic factor in carcinogenesis

The paper presents current data on theepigenetic regulation of gene expression in malignant tumors. Methylation of CpG islands in the gene promoter regions not accompanied by DNA structural changes leads to gene inactivation. The analytical methods of DNA methylation are described in detail. Methylation of certain genes in different tumor types are examplified. Since methylation is an early marker of carcinogenesis, there is an opportunity of elaborating of prospective diagnostic protocols.     

Effect of perftoran on the oxidant-antioxidant system in patients with severe trauma and blood loss

Diminution of reperfusion and re-oxygenation lesions is an important task in the treatment of patients with severe injury and blood loss. From this standpoint the influence of perforan on the condition of the oxidant-antioxidant system was studied in patients with severe combined trauma. The application of perftoran in the early post-trauma period was found to intensify the processes of lipid peroxidation and, simultaneously, to normalize the parameters of the antioxidant-protection system.     

Polyamines in malignant lymphoma of the skin and in Kaposi's sarcoma

High-pressure liquid chromatography was used to detect polyamines, the markers of lymphoproliferative diseases of the skin and of Kaposi's sarcoma. The urine polyamine detection may become one of the diagnostic tests in these conditions, but its findings should be confirmed by clinical and histologic data. Measurements of the urine polyamines may be helpful in assessment of the treatment efficacy.     

Interferon in the treatment of acute viral hepatitis B

The Soviet leukocytic alpha 2-interferon obtained by gene engineering was assessed (according to the clinical and biochemical findings) for the therapeutic efficacy in acute viral hepatitis B. The drug was injected intramuscularly to patients with grave and medium-grave hepatitis during 10 days. The treatment was instituted within the first 1-5 days of jaundice. The patients with medium-grave acute viral hepatitis B manifested a beneficial therapeutic effect of alpha 2-interferon obtained by gene engineering as did the patients with the grave disease pattern before they developed the signs of liver encephalopathy.     

Carcinosarcomas of the uterus: molecular-genetic and morphological features

13 cases of uterine carcinosarcomas have been studied by molecular-genetic method. The impairment of some genes (K-RAS gene in the first exon, TP53 in the 5th-9th exons, PTEN in the 5th and 8th exons) has been found out. The loss of heterozygosity of TP53 gene in epithelium and mesenchyme of the uterus has been detected. According to the estimation of impairment the studied tumors was divided into monoclonal and biclonal ones. This stratification could be use as prognostic criteria of uterine carcinosarcomas clinical presentation.
