The purpose of this study was to investigate, during the performance of an object discrimination task, responses of neurons in the monkey hippocampal formation to the sight of several objects that have biological meaning, and compare these responses with those of amygdalar neurons studied previously using the same task. Neuronal activity in the hippocampal formation of conscious monkeys was recorded during performance of a task that led to presentation of familiar rewarding, familiar aversive, or unfamiliar objects. Of 864 neurons recorded in the hippocampal formation and adjacent cortices, 160 (18.5%) responded to the sight of a certain object(s). Responses to the sight of different kinds of objects were analyzed in detail. Nondifferential neurons (n = 73) responded to different objects with no significant difference in response magnitudes, and differential neurons (n = 87) responded to different objects with different response magnitudes. Of the differential neurons, 23 responded more strongly to rewarding objects than to other objects (rewarding-object-dominant neurons), but the magnitude of responses to objects did not necessarily correlates with the order of preferences to the objects as determined from observation of animal behavior. Aversive-object-dominant neurons (n = 13) responded more to aversive objects than to other objects. Unfamiliar-object-dominant neurons (n = 7) responded more to unfamiliar objects than to familiar objects. Selective neurons (n = 10) responded selectively to only one object or one category of objects. Fourteen of the rewarding- or averse-object-dominant neurons were tested in extinction or reversal trials. In 12 of 14 neurons, responses to a rewarding or aversive object did not change, or slightly weakened, in extinction or reversal trials. The results suggest the following. (1) Responses of rewarding- or aversive-object-dominant neurons may be involved in object-reward or object-aversion association. However, responses of many of these neurons might reflect past inputs to reinforcement rather than extant emotional processing. (2) Responses of unfamiliar-object-dominant neurons may be involved in recognition of objects based on their familiar or unfamiliar aspects. These results are further discussed and compared with responsiveness of amygdalar neurons.  相似文献

Single neuron activity was recorded in the monkey anterior putamen to compare visuomotor-related responses during operant bar-press behavior with visual discrimination of objects. Of 615 neurons recorded 9.8% ( ) responded to the presentation of food during forced delay of access to the bar. Of these 60 neurons, 38 were also tested with nonfood, and 19 of these responded to the nonfood objects regardless of the following movement. The amplitude of the visual-related responses of some differential neurons was graded for different objects to reflect the relative degree of preference for the food presented. However, these responses disappeared in reaction time tasks in which the bar could be accessed for pressing immediately upon presentation of an object. The visual response latency of differential neurons ranged from 50 to 700 ms (mean ± SD, 386 ±211 ms), which was longer than that of the nondifferential responses (207 ± 204 ms). These results suggest that anterior putamen neurons might participate in estimation of visual information that could be related to forecasting movement.  相似文献

Human visual evoked potentials were recorded during presentation of photos of human and animal faces and various face features. Negative waves with approximate peak latencies of 165 msec (N170) were bilaterally recorded from the occipito-temporal regions. Mean peak latencies of the N170 were shorter for faces than eyes only. Analyses of amplitudes of evoked potentials indicated that the N170 elicited by faces reflected activity of a specific neural system which was insensitive to detailed differences among individual faces regardless of species, and consequently suggest that this system might function to detect existence of faces in general. On the other hand, the mean amplitude of the N170 elicited by human eyes was significantly larger than those by animal eyes. These differences in response latencies and amplitudes of the N170 suggest existence of at least 2 different visual evoked potentials with similar latencies (i.e., N170) which are sensitive to faces in general and human eyes, respectively. Dipole source localization analysis indicated that dipoles for the N170 elicited by eyes were located in the posterior inferior temporal gyrus, and those for faces, located initially in the same region, but moved toward the fusiform and lingual gyri at the late phase of the N170. The results indicated that information processing of faces and eyes separated at least as early as the latency of the N170 at the posterior inferior temporal gyrus as well as the fusiform and lingual gyri, and might provide neurophysiological and anatomical bases to an initial structural encoding stage of human faces.  相似文献

Responses from parabrachial gustatory neurons in behaving rats   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
1. The responses of a total of 70 single neurons were recorded from the parabrachial nuclei (PBN) in awake rats. In 59 neurons, sapid stimuli (0.5 ml) elicited significant taste responses. Of these 59 neurons, 10 also had significant responses to water. The mean spontaneous rate of the taste neurons was 13.4 +/- 6.9 (SD) spikes/s. Of the remaining 11 neurons, 9 responded significantly only to water; 2 had no significant responses to the standard fluid stimuli. 2. Based on the magnitude of their response to our four standard stimuli, the taste neurons were classified as follows: 42 NaCl-best, 14 sucrose-best, 2 citric acid-best, and 1 QHCl-best. Of these, 25 responded only to one of four sapid stimuli; 20 of these specific cells responded only to NaCl. All the remaining 34 neurons responded to two or more of the four sapid stimuli, with NaCl and sucrose responsiveness dominant. For the 59 taste neurons, the mean entropy for the absolute value of the responses was 0.68; for the excitatory activity alone, it was 0.58. 3. The mean responses to NaCl and sucrose concentration series increased monotonically. Except at the lowest concentration, responses to citric acid also increased monotonically, but with a lower slope. Mean responses to QHCl, however, remained stable or even decreased with increasing concentration. Thus the power functions for the NaCl and sucrose intensity-response series were higher than those of citric acid and QHCl. 4. A hierarchical cluster analysis of 59 parabrachial neurons suggested four different categories: NaCl-best, sucrose-best, citric acid-best, and QHCl-best. These categories were less evident in the two-dimensional space produced by multidimensional analysis, because the positions of NaCl- and sucrose-best neurons formed a continuum in which neural response profiles change successively from sucrose-specific to NaCl-specific. 5. The results were consistent with previous anatomic and neurophysiological data suggesting convergence in the medulla of sensory input from receptors in the nasoincisor ducts (NID) and on the anterior tongue (AT). Visual information processing was investigated in the inferotemporal cortical (ITCx)-amygdalar (AM)-lateral hypothalamic (LHA) axis which contributes to food-nonfood discrimination. Neuronal activity was recorded from monkey AM and LHA during discrimination of sensory stimuli including sight of food or nonfood. The task had four phases: control, visual, bar press, and ingestion. Of 710 AM neurons tested, 220 (31.0%) responded during visual phase: 48 to only visual stimulation, 13 (1.9%) to visual plus oral sensory stimulation, 142 (20.0%) to multimodal stimulation and 17 (2.4%) to one affectively significant item. Of 669 LHA neurons tested, 106 (15.8%) responded in the visual phase. Of 80 visual-related neurons tested systematically, 33 (41.2%) responded selectively to the sight of any object predicting the availability of reward, and 47 (58.8%) responded nondifferentially to both food and nonfood. Many of AM neuron responses were graded according to the degree of affective significance of sensory stimuli (sensory-affective association), but responses of LHA food responsive neurons did not depend on the kind of reward indicated by the sensory stimuli (stimulus-reinforcement association). Some AM and LHA food responses were modulated by extinction or reversal. Dynamic information processing in ITCx-AM-LHA axis was investigated by reversible deficits of bilateral ITCx or AM by cooling. ITCx cooling suppressed discrimination by vision responding AM neurons (8/17). AM cooling suppressed LHA responses to food (9/22). We suggest deep AM-LHA involvement in food-nonfood discrimination based on AM sensory-affective association and LHA stimulus-reinforcement association.  相似文献

The effects of electro-acupuncture stimulation (EAS) of two different areas of a hindlimb with different stimulus intensities on sympathoadrenal medullary functions were examined in anesthetized artificially ventilated rats. Two needles of 160 microm diameter and about 5 mm apart were inserted about 5 mm deep into a hindpaw (Chungyang, S42) or a hind leg (Tsusanli, S36) and current of various intensities passed to excite various afferent nerve fiber groups at a repetition rate of 20 Hz and pulse duration of 0.5 ms for 30-60 s. Fiber groups of afferent nerves stimulated in a hindlimb were monitored by recording evoked action potentials from the afferents innervating the areas stimulated. The sympathoadrenal medullary functions were monitored by recording adrenal sympathetic efferent nerve activity and secretion rates of catecholamines from the adrenal medulla. EAS of a hindpaw at a stimulus strength sufficient to excite the group III and IV somatic afferent fibers produced reflex increases in both adrenal sympathetic efferent nerve activity and the secretion rate of catecholamines. EAS of a hind leg at a stimulus strength sufficient to excite the group III and IV afferent fibers produced reflex responses of either increases or decreases in sympathoadrenal medullary functions. All responses of adrenal sympathetic efferent nerve activity were lost after cutting the afferent nerves ipsilateral to the stimulated areas, indicating that the responses are the reflexes whose afferents nerve pathway is composed of hindlimb somatic nerves. It is concluded that electro-acupuncture stimulation of a hindpaw causes an excitatory reflex, while that of a hind leg causes either excitatory or inhibitory reflex of sympathoadrenal medullary functions, even if both group III and IV somatic afferent fibers are stimulated.  相似文献

IntroductionThis study aimed to analyze torque/force generation and transportation in double-curved canals instrumented with 3 types of glide path files using optimum glide path (OGP) motion in comparison with continuous rotation.MethodsSixty simulated double-curved canals were prepared with #10/0.05 or #15/0.03 HyFlex EDM Glidepath files (Coltene/Whaledent, Altstätten, Switzerland) or a #13/0.04 prototype MANI Glidepath file (Tochigi, Japan) using OGP motion or continuous rotation (n = 10 each). Canals were sequentially prepared to 20 mm and 22 mm (full working length) using automated root canal instrumentation and a torque/force analyzing device. Transportation was calculated at 1–9 mm from the apex. Data were compared using 2-way analysis of variance followed by a post hoc simple main effect test with Bonferroni correction and a Kruskal-Wallis test (α = 5%).ResultsAll #10/0.05 instruments fractured. In the 22-mm preparation, the OGP motion resulted in lower clockwise torque and screw-in force than did continuous rotation (P < .05). In the 20-mm preparation, #15/0.03 instruments recorded a lower screw-in force for OGP motion than for continuous rotation (P < .05). Comparing the 2 preparation phases, OGP motion generated no significant differences; however, continuous rotation developed higher clockwise torque and screw-in force in the 22-mm preparation than in the 20-mm preparation (P < .05). There was no significant difference among the tested groups for transportation values.ConclusionsCompared with continuous rotation, OGP motion generated less screw-in force, lower clockwise torque, and similar transportation. The #15/0.03 HyFlex EDM instrument and the #13/0.04 prototype MANI instrument performed similarly well.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between mortality and rice cadmium (Cd) concentration in inhabitants of a polluted area in Japan. The target subjects were inhabitants of the Jinzu River basin who participated in health examinations for screening of renal dysfunction from 1979 to 1984. The mean rice Cd concentration in each hamlet was used as an index of the Cd exposure. We conducted a 26 year follow‐up survey in 3281 inhabitants (1544 men and 1737 women) whose data regarding the rice Cd concentration were available. Mortality risk ratios for all and specific causes were estimated after adjustments for age at baseline, smoking status and history of hypertension using a Cox hazard model or Fine and Gray competing risks regression model. The mortality risk ratios of rice Cd concentration (+0.1 ppm) for all causes in women were significantly increased (risk ratio: 1.04). Furthermore, the relative risks of rice Cd concentration for kidney and urinary tract disease, renal diseases, renal failure and toxic effects of cadmium were significantly increased in both sexes. These findings indicated that increased rice Cd concentration decreased the prognosis for life over a long‐term observation in women. This result provides important information for determining the worldwide standard for allowable rice Cd concentration.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Stroke mortality in Japan has significantly declined during recent decades. To determine the cause of this decrease, we studied the trends in stroke incidence and case fatality within 28 days after stroke in a rural area in Japan. METHODS: We used a population-based registry during 1977-1991 in Oyabe, a rural area in the central part of Japan. The average population aged 25 years and older numbered 32 859 persons. Changes in age-standardized stroke incidence rate were calculated and compared between the 3 periods 1977-1981, 1982-1986, and 1987-1991. The 28-day case fatality rate was evaluated and also compared between the 3 periods by onset year. RESULTS: The total number of strokes was 2068. The age-standardized incidence rate of all strokes decreased during the 15-year period, from 605 to 417 per 100 000 in men and from 476 to 329 per 100 000 in women. A marked decline was found during 1977-1986 but was not apparent during 1987-1991. Moreover, there was an increase in the group aged 75 years and older. The 28-day case fatality rates for all strokes improved from 18.0% to 14.2% in men and from 26.8% to 19.1% in women during the observation period. CONCLUSIONS: These data indicate that declines in the stroke incidence and the 28- day case fatality have been associated with a marked decrease in stroke-related mortality in Japan.  相似文献
