Antisilicotic activity of fractions of the copolymer of ethylene glycol vinyl glycidyl ether and N-vinylpyrrolidone

Effect of olanzapine treatment on platelet glutamine synthetase-like protein and glutamate dehydrogenase immunoreactivity in schizophrenia.

According to contemporary views, the glutamatergic system is implicated in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia, and atypical neuroleptics exert their effects (at least partially) through the glutamatergic system. Immunoreactive glutamate-metabolising enzymes, such as glutamine synthetase-like protein (GSLP) and two glutamate dehydrogenase isoenzymes (GDH), have been discovered in human platelets. The amount of GSLP in the platelets of 40 chronic patients with schizophrenia was found to be significantly higher than in 33 controls (consistent with our previous finding of increased amounts of GSLP in the prefrontal cortex of chronic schizophrenia patients). Moreover, survival analysis of the group of patients treated with olanzapine for 28 weeks showed that the larger amount of GSLP measured in platelets before treatment, the shorter the treatment time needed to achieve a positive clinical response (defined a priori as > or = 20% reduction in PANSS total score from the initial level before the treatment). Hence, GSLP level may serve as a predictor of the treatment duration to achieve a positive outcome with olanzapine. Both GSLP and GDH were found significantly changed in the course of treatment; hence, treatment with olanzapine influences the amounts of glutamate-metabolising enzymes in the platelets of chronic schizophrenia patients.     

Ocular prosthesis following plastic surgery

The shape of the eye prostheses depends on the plastic surgery type. Standard prostheses with thin but not sharp edges are used to recreate the conjunctival cavity, prostheses with a deep retraction or flat ones are employed for a delayed introduction into the stump, prostheses with a 'swelling' at the upper edge are of use in surgery to correct the upper eyelid falling in, prostheses with a flattened lower edge and a 'shelf' at the upper edge are used to fortify the lower eyelid. Individual prostheses are recommended after plastic surgery. The prostheses should not prevent free closing and blinking of the eyelids, retaining the identical opening of the eyes. An inadequately chosen prosthesis brings to nothing the tremendous work made by the surgeon. Ocular prosthetics may be regarded as the final stage stabilizing the results of plastic surgery.     

Treatment and prognosis of lymphoblastic lymphosarcoma in children]

Analysis was made of the results of the treatment of 18 children afflicted with lymphoblastic lymphosarcoma, with estimation of predictors influencing the patients' survival (from 1980 to 1986). The most important predictors influencing the 2-year relapse-free survival were found to be the stage, localization of the process, the presence of the symptoms of intoxication and biological activity. The data obtained were used later in the treatment of 160 children during 1986 to 1989. The results of the 2-year survival of this patients' group appreciably differ from those derived before.     

Genetic analysis of tick-borne encephalitis virus strains from West Siberia

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus strains were isolated in West Siberia in the forest-steppe region near the Ob river in 1981-1992. Hybridization of genome RNA of 46 TBE strains with [32P]cDNA of TBE Sofyin strain revealed essential differences in the genomes of West-Siberian and Far-Eastern Sofyin strains of TBE virus. Nucleotide sequences of 6 TBE strains (1348-1503 n.) have been determined. A 89-98% homology of Siberian TBE strains has been shown, while the similarity of the respective fragment of E gene for West Siberian and Sofyin strains was no more than 81%. No significant changes in E gene of TBE strains have been detected over a 12-year period.
