Because the mite-allergen content in homes is highly variable even in the same geographic area, we tried to determine which variables influence mite infestation. We evaluated mite-allergen content in bedding relative to housing conditions and living habits. This cross-sectional study included 108 homes. Housing conditions were assessed by an architect and living habits by a researcher specialized in social and family economics. Group I allergen level was measured on the mattress dust with monoclonal antibodies, and relative humidity (RH) was monitored in the bedroom during a 2-week period. Homes with low RH did have low mite-allergen content. In contrast, homes with intermediate RH levels had very variable mite-allergen content. Using analysis of variance and a logistic regression analysis, we were unable to identify any variable predictive of mite-allergen content. Thus, factors other than relative humidity seem to influence mite infestation. Moreover, the absence of association between mite infestation and ventilation rate might be accounted for by the gentle climate in our area with notable outdoor RH.  相似文献

In areas with low house dust mite (HDM) allergen exposure, both mite sensitization and asthma prevalence are low. In most other areas, HDM allergen exposure is higher than the threshold for sensitization. In this setting, is HDM allergen exposure a factor which is causally related to the development of asthma in HDM-sensitive individuals? To answer this question, the cumulative prevalence of asthma was evaluated in a group of 157 schoolchildren, aged 10 and 11 yrs, who were allergic to HDM allergen, and compared it with HDM allergen exposure and atopic status, using univariate and multivariate analysis. HDM allergen levels were measured in mattress dust using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Of mattress dust samples, 94% had an HDM allergen level >2 microg x g dust(-1). Atopy was evaluated by means of skin prick tests using five common allergens. Among the predictive variables studied by means of univariate analysis, only the number of positive skin tests and male sex correlated with asthma prevalence, but not HDM allergen exposure. Logistic regression analysis also demonstrated that the number of positive skin tests correlated with asthma prevalence (odds ratio (OR)=1.38, p=0.05), whereas the OR for HDM allergen exposure was 1.0. This survey suggests that, in a geographical area with high HDM allergen exposure, asthma prevalence is not linked with HDM allergen levels.  相似文献

Very few studies in humans have quantified the effect obtained after direct electrical stimulation of the amygdala, in terms of both emotional and physiological responses. We tested patients with drug-resistant partial epilepsies who were explored with intracerebral electrodes in the setting of presurgical evaluation. We assessed the effects of direct electric stimulations in either the right or the left amygdala on verbally self-reported emotions (Izard scale) and on psychophysiological markers of emotions by recording skin conductance responses (SCRs) and by measuring the electromyographic responses of the corrugator supercilii (EMGc). According to responses on Izard scales, electrical stimulations of the right amygdala induced negative emotions, especially fear and sadness. In contrast, stimulations of the left amygdala were able to induce either pleasant (happiness) or unpleasant (fear, anxiety, sadness) emotions. Unpleasant states induced by electrical stimulations were accompanied by an increase in EMGc activity. In addition, when emotional changes were reported after electrical stimulation, SCR amplitude for the positively valenced emotions was larger than for the negative ones. These findings provide direct in vivo evidence that the human amygdala is involved in emotional experiences and strengthen the hypothesis of a functional asymmetry of the amygdala for valence and arousal processing.  相似文献

The relationship between long-term exposure to air pollutants, especially with regard to photochemical air pollutants, and asthma prevalence in developed countries is controversial. The objective of this cross-sectional survey was to compare mean levels of the main gaseous air pollutants and prevalence rates of rhinitis, asthma, and asthmatic symptoms. It included 2,445 children from the 8th and 9th school grades who had been living for at least 3 years in an area where some communities undergo the heaviest photochemical exposure in France. Data on rhinitis, asthmatic symptoms, and asthma prevalence were gathered with the ISAAC paper and video questionnaires. The relation between level of air pollutants and asthma was assessed first by comparison of crude prevalence rates (chi-square test), and then by simple regression analysis and multiple logistic regression analysis. No consistent association between mean SO2 and NO2 levels, and prevalence of rhinitis, asthma, or asthmatic symptoms could be demonstrated. In contrast, there were statistically significant associations between prevalence of asthmatic symptoms and mean ozone O3) concentration. The interpretation of such findings is not straightforward, as these symptoms can be interpreted either as respiratory irritation due to exposure to nonspecific airway stimuli or as a true asthmatic state. Additional studies are required to clarify this important issue. In conclusion, this large cross-sectional epidemiologic survey performed in an area of high photochemical air pollution did demonstrate statistically significant associations between the prevalence of asthmatic symptoms and mean O3 concentration.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Muscle relaxants (MR) are responsible for 59% of peroperative anaphylactic reactions. A major issue would be to determine whether a systematic preoperative screening in the general population should be recommended. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of muscle relaxant sensitivity in a sample of the general population and to assess the role of possible risk factors. METHODS: Two hundred and fifty-eight subjects, aged 20-40 years, visiting a health care centre for a check-up were evaluated. Protocol included a questionnaire (occupation, symptoms of atopy, previous surgery, history of drug allergy), skin-prick tests to four commercial muscle relaxants and measurement of specific IgE against quaternary ammonium ions. Atopy was evaluated by skin-prick tests to common inhalant allergens and by a Phadiatop test. RESULTS: Of the study group, 9.3% had either a positive skin test to one or more muscle relaxant or a presence of specific IgE to quaternary ammonium ions. No risk factor was identified in the studied group. CONCLUSION: Since the rate of MR sensitivity is much higher than the anticipated rate of peroperative reactions due to allergy, a systematic preoperative screening for MR allergy should not be recommended for adults in a general population.  相似文献

The authors report the first results of a transversal survey done from the end of November 1976 to the end of April 1977 in 4 secondary schools (CES, CEG) in Marseille and its suburbs. 1.795 children, between 11 and 15, in the first and fourth form, filled up a questionary inquiring into their smoking habits and consumption. Already a certain number of results can be drawn: --in this group of children, mostly girls (926 G/882 B) 181 were regular smokers (10,07%); --among these smokers, 70 smoked every day (38,6%), 60 smoked more than a packet a week (33%), finally 122 inhaled smoke; --they acquired the habit of smoking regularly between the age of 14 and 15, in the 3rd and 4th forms, as there was only 9,4% of smokers in the 3rd and 19% in the 4th form; --finally, parents seem to play a fundamental inducing part in this habit, as among smoking children 32.8% have parents both smoking, 41% a smoking mother, 71.2% a smoking father, while for non smokers the percentage were respectively of 19.9%, 24.9% and 54.3%.  相似文献

Although studies of families, inbred populations and twins have established that asthma has a hereditary basis, little evidence has shown that intrinsic asthma has an increased familial occurrence. To document this issue, we compared the prevalence of asthma in families of intrinsic asthmatics, extrinsic asthmatics and non-asthmatics. The intrinsic asthma group included those with negative skin tests to common aero-allergens (n = 117). The extrinsic asthma group included those with one or more positive skin tests (n = 164). The non-asthmatic group (n = 224) was recruited at a check-up center. The siblings of each subject completed a standardized questionnaire on history of asthma. The results showed that asthma was more prevalent (P less than 0.001) in siblings of intrinsic asthmatics (8.9%) than in siblings of the non-asthmatic group (2.4%). The prevalence of asthma in siblings of intrinsic and extrinsic asthmatics was similar. In conclusion, both intrinsic and extrinsic asthma have an increased family occurrence.  相似文献
