The pattern of infestations of Ixodes dammini on white-tailed deer in Ogle County in Illinois was studied through examinations of hunted deer from 1988 to 1990. The Illinois Geographic Information System mapped the spatial distribution of tick infestations on deer and related it to a known endemic focus for I. dammini and Borrelia burgdorferi (Castle Rock State Park), and to a major waterway (Rock River). Second-order neighborhood analysis was used to analyze the spatial distribution of deer around Castle Rock State Park. More than 25% of deer were infested. All deer were clustered around CRSP, but the clustering resulted mostly from clustering of infested deer around CRSP. CRSP is apparently the only important source of tick infestations in Ogle County. Clustering of infested deer did not change during the 3-yr study period. The dispersion pattern of ticks on deer was aggregated, with twice and three times as many ticks collected from bucks as from does and from fawns, respectively. More male ticks than female ticks were collected from infested deer. Of 59 ticks removed from harvested deer in 1990, 5.1% tested positive for B. burgdorferi. 相似文献

To better delineate the impact of parasitic coinfection in coastal Kenya, we developed a novel specimen-sparing bead assay using multiplex flow immunoassay (MFI) technology to simultaneously measure serum or plasma immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4) against Brugia malayi antigen (BMA) and Schistosoma haematobium soluble worm antigen (SWAP). Properties of the bead assay were estimated by latent class analysis using data from S. haematobium egg counts/filarial rapid diagnostic cards (RDTs), parasite-specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs), and the multichannel IgG4 assay. For schistosomiasis, the bead assay had an estimated sensitivity of 81% and a specificity of 45%, and it was more sensitive than ELISA or urine egg counts for diagnosing infection. For filariasis, it had a sensitivity of 86% and a specificity of 39%, and it was more sensitive than ELISA or RDT. Measuring antibody by MFI is feasible and may provide more accurate epidemiological information than current parasitological tests, especially in the setting of low-intensity infections. 相似文献

This article deals with professional role acquisition in nurses and discusses results from three studies concerning expectations and attitudes towards this acquisition. The studies have been carried out in Sweden. The discussion comprises expressed expectations and attitudes of nurse students and registered nurses in relation to our theoretical perspectives presented in a former article. The theoretical perspectives concentrate on three aspects of social action: change-drama, interchange-ritual, and maintenance-routine. The results indicate that the professional nurse role is acquired according to a traditional pattern, in spite of changes in curriculum and goals of nursing education and health care. Wing geometric morphometry was used to study the spatial structuring of populations of Triatoma infestans from different villages, ecotopes, and sites within a village in northwestern Argentina. A total of 308 male and 197 female wings of T. infestans collected from peridomestic and domestic ecotopes in March 2000 was analyzed. On average, female bugs had a significantly larger wing size than males. Triatomines collected from domiciles or structures associated with chickens had larger wings than bugs collected from goat or pig corrals. The wing size of bugs did not differ significantly between villages. Discriminant analyses of wing shape showed significant divergence between villages, ecotopes, and individual collection sites. The study of metric variation of males between sites belonging to the same ecotope also revealed significant heterogeneity. Indeed, within the same section of the village the difference between two goat corrals was sometimes greater than that between neighboring goat and pig corrals. Thus, morphometric heterogeneity within villages may be the result not only of ecotope and host associations, but also of physical isolation between subunits. The strong structuring of T. infestans populations in the study area indicates that recolonization could be traced back to a small geographic source. 相似文献
