The purpose of the present experiment was to investigate lateralized effects of concurrent verbal and nonverbal tasks on right- and left-hand finger-tapping. In addition to the verbal vs. nonverbal dichotomy, both motor and sensory tasks were used. It was predicted that a verbal motor task (reading aloud) would lead to more inhibitory interference for right-hand tappings than would a sensory verbal task (watching and remembering slides with nonsense syllables). Similarly, it was predicted that a motor nonverbal task (humming a tune) would lead to more left-hand inhibitory interference than would a sensory nonverbal task (watching pairs of spatial patterns). Results showed a predicted lateralized right-hand decrement in finger-tapping during the motor verbal task. However, an increase in left-hand tapping frequency above baseline was observed during both sensory tasks, while no significant difference was observed between the hands for the motor nonverbal task. 相似文献

We describe the pattern of cognitive profiles within a community-based sample of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and dementia (PDD) using cluster analyses, and compare the results with data from patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). Fifty patients with PDD and 39 with AD from Stavanger, Norway, and 62 patients with DLB from San Diego, CA, USA were diagnosed by either standardized clinical procedures or criteria (all PDD and all AD cases) or necropsy (all DLB cases). Four subgroups were identified: two subgroups with a subcortical cognitive profile (one with mild and one with moderate dementia severity), one subgroup with global impairment and severe dementia, and one subgroup with a cortical cognitive profile and moderate dementia. Of the patients with PDD and with DLB, 56% and 55%, respectively, had a subcortical cognitive profile, compared with only 33% of the AD patients. Conversely, 30% of the patients with PDD and 26% of those with DLB had a cortical cognitive profile, compared with 67% of the patients with AD. These findings suggest that in some patients with PDD, frontosubcortical changes are the main contributing factor to dementia, whereas in other patients, cortical and hippocampal changes are more important. 相似文献

In the present study, hemispheric differences in global and analytic processing were investigated in preliterate and literate children, using the "dual-letter" matching task paradigm (Navon, 1977). The stimuli consisted of lateralized visual presentations of large uppercase letters made up of small uppercase letters. The task of the subject was to decide on each trial if the large or small letters were the same or not. Vocal reaction time (VRT) and error-frequency were used as dependent measures. In Experiment 1, 28 right-handed 8-years old children participated. The children were split into a preliterate and a literate group depending on teachers evaluations, and on scores on a reading test. The results showed longer VRTs for the preliterate children when the stimuli were initially presented to the right hemisphere and especially when the subjects were required to match the small letters. These results were followed up in Experiment 2, where the preliterate subjects were split into "fast" and "slow" readers. The results showed that the "slow" readers were more impaired in processing the letter stimuli when the stimuli were initially presented to the right hemisphere. It is concluded that hemispheric asymmetry for letter processing interacts with the development of normal reading ability in children. 相似文献

The chemotactic behavior of Campylobacter jejuni was determined in the presence of different amino acids, carbohydrates, organic acids, and preparations and constituents of mucin and bile. L-Fucose was the only carbohydrate and L-aspartate, L-cysteine, L-glutamate, and L-serine were the only amino acids producing a chemotactic (positive) response. Several salts of organic acids, including pyruvate, succinate, fumarate, citrate, malate, and alpha-ketoglutarate, were also chemoattractants, as were bile (beef, chicken, and oxgall) and mucin (bovine gallbladder and hog gastric). Most constituents of bile tested individually were chemorepellents, but the mucin component was chemoattractant. The chemotactic behavior of C. jejuni toward L-fucose, a constituent of both bile and mucin, may be an important factor in the affinity of the organism for the gallbladder and intestinal tract. 相似文献

Because prepared learning has been defined in terms of response acquisition in spite of degraded input, it was expected that differences in resistance to extinction between skin conductance responses conditioned to potentially phobic and neutral stimuli would increase with increased interstimulus interval (ISI) and be larger with a trace than with a delay conditioning paradigm. Twelve groups with 10 subjects each were observed in a differential conditioning experiment manipulating ISI (2, 8, or 16 sec), paradigm (delay versus trace), and fear-relevance of the conditioned stimulus (potentially phobic versus neutral). The results showed highly reliable resistance to extinction of first-interval anticipatory responses to phobic stimuli, and no resistance to extinction of the corresponding responses to the neutral stimuli. This difference did not interact either with the ISI or the paradigm factor. Thus, although underscoring the reliability of the difference in conditioning to potentially phobic and neutral stimuli, the results did not support the specific hypothesis of conditioning to phobic stimuli as being less dependent on the ISI parameters than conditioning to neutral stimuli. 相似文献

Brain activation during dichotic presentations of consonant-vowel and musical instrument stimuli: a 15O-PET study 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Dichotic listening means that two different stimuli are presented at the same time, one in each ear. This technique is frequently used in experimental and clinical studies as a measure of hemispheric specialization. The primary aim of the present study was to record regional changes in the distribution of cerebral blood flow (CBF) with the 15O-PET technique to dichotically presented consonant-vowel (CV) and musical instrument stimuli, in order to test the basic assumption of differential hemispheric involvement when stimuli presented to one ear dominate over stimuli presented in the other ear. All stimuli were 380 ms in duration with a 1000 ms interstimulus interval, and were presented in blocks of either CV-syllable or musical instrument pairs. Twelve normal healthy subjects had to press a button whenever they detected a CV-syllable or a musical instrument target in a stream of CV- and musical instrument distractor stimuli. The targets appeared equally often in the right and left ear channel. The CV-syllable and musical instrument targets activated bilateral areas in the superior temporal gyri. However, there were significant interactions with regard to asymmetry of the magnitude of peak activation in the significant activation clusters. The CV-syllables resulted in greater neural activation in the left temporal lobe while the musical instruments resulted in greater neural activation in the right temporal lobe. Within-subjects correlations between magnitude of dichotic listening and CBF asymmetry were, however, non-significant. The changes in neural activation were closely mimicked by the performance data which showed a right ear superiority in response accuracy for the CV-syllables, and a left ear superiority for the musical instruments. In addition to the temporal lobe activations, there were activation tendencies in the left inferior frontal lobe, right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, left occipital lobe, and cerebellum. 相似文献

In the present study we measured brain activation, with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during the execution of a covert semantic categorization task. This involves activation of working memory and internal concept generation. Previous brain imaging studies of covert verbal fluency have shown widespread activation in the frontal and temporal lobes, and anterior cingulate. However, most of these studies have employed simple stimulus tasks with repetition of words e.g., beginning with a certain letter of the alphabet. Moreover, the subject is typically cued (either visually or auditory) every 2-5 second. In the present study we used a "single-cue" instruction at the beginning of each activation period where the subject was instructed to internally generate category specific names related to: "States in the USA," "UK Soccer clubs," and "Male names" during 54s periods. The three activation periods were compared to three baseline periods in which the subject was instructed to imagine mentally "lying on a beach and looking at the sky." Functional MRI was performed with a 1.5T Siemens Vision scanner. Initial TIW 3D FLASH scanning of anatomy was done, and thereafter, serial imaging with 60 BOLD sensitive echo planar whole brain measurements were done during the active and passive tasks. Main activation areas were found in the left middle frontal gyrus, partially overlapping with Brodmann area 9. This is in agreement with previous studies of increased activation in the left frontal lobe, and may indicate a left frontal neural network for accessing the mental lexicon. 相似文献

The present ERP-experiment investigated brain asymmetry in encoding and representation of the formation of conditional associations in a Pavlovian framework. Two consonant-vowel syllables were used as conditional stimuli, one of them paired with an unconditional noise during the acquisition phase (CS+), the other never paired with noise (CS-). During a subsequent test phase, both CS cues were presented dichotically i.e. at the same time. Half of the subjects had the CS+ probe presented to the right ear (contralateral to the left hemisphere). The other half of the subjects had the CS+ presented to the left ear (contralateral to the right hemisphere). ERPs from F3, Fz and F4 leads were recorded. The paradigm used was an adaptation of the standard dichotic listening technique for the study of learned associations. The results showed that conditional associative learning occurred during the acquisition phase in both "groups". The P235 latency was furthermore delayed over the left hemisphere to the CS+ probe. During the dichotic test phase, there was a clear laterality or asymmetry effect between the groups for both the N125 and N450 components, possibly supporting an interpretation of asymmetry in encoding and cortical representation of a conditional association, although alternative interpretations remain open. 相似文献

A reduction or reversal of the normal leftward asymmetry of the planum temporale (PT) has been claimed to be typical of dyslexia, although some recent studies have challenged this view. In a population-based study of 20 right-handed dyslexic boys and 20 matched controls, we have measured the PT and the adjacent planum parietale (PP) region in sagittal magnetic resonance images. For the PT, mean left and right areas and asymmetry coefficients were compared. Since a PP area often could not be identified in one or both hemispheres, a qualitative comparison was used for this region. The total planar area (sum of PT and PP) was also compared between the two groups. A dichotic listening (DL) test with consonant–vowel syllables was administered to assess functional asymmetry of language. The results showed a mean leftward PT asymmetry in both the dyslexic and the control group, with no significant difference for the degree of PT asymmetry. Planned comparisons revealed however, a trend towards smaller left PT in the dyslexic group. In control children, but not in the dyslexic children, a significant correlation between PT asymmetry and reading was observed. A mean leftward asymmetry was also found for the total planar area, with no difference between the groups for the degree of asymmetry. Significantly fewer dyslexic children than control children showed a rightward asymmetry for the PP region. Both groups showed a normal right ear advantage on the DL task, with no significant difference for DL asymmetry. No significant correlation was observed between PT asymmetry and DL asymmetry. The present population-based study adds to recent reports of normal PT asymmetry in dyslexia, but indicates that subtle morphological abnormalities in the left planar area may be present in this condition. 相似文献
