Rubber band as external assist device to provide simple grip for quadriplegic patients

The rubber band as an external assist device provides an effective grip for the hand of high spinal cord injury quadriplegic patients. This technique can also be useful for preoperative patients who are undergoing physical and occupational therapy or to assess patients' needs for surgery. The rubber band as an adaptive device is preferred because of its availability, low visibility, and ease of application. We attempt to provide a more standardized method of the rubber band technique and to popularize it.     

A novel 37-Kd adhesive membrane protein from cloned murine bone marrow stromal cells and cloned murine hematopoietic progenitor cells

The adhesion of hematopoietic progenitor cells to bone marrow stromal cells is critical to hematopoiesis and involves multiple effector molecules. Stromal cell molecules that participate in this interaction were sought by analyzing the detergent-soluble membrane proteins of GBI/6 stromal cells that could be adsorbed by intact FDCP-1 progenitor cells. A single-chain protein from GBI/6 cells having an apparent molecular weight of 37 Kd was selectively adsorbed by FDCP-1 cells. This protein, designated p37, could be surface-radiolabeled and thus appeared to be exposed on the cell membrane. An apparently identical 37- Kd protein was expressed by three stromal cell lines, by Swiss 3T3 fibroblastic cells, and by FDCP-1 and FDCP-2 progenitor cells. p37 was selectively adsorbed from membrane lysates by a variety of murine hematopoietic cells, including erythrocytes, but not by human erythrocytes. Binding of p37 to cells was calcium-dependent, and was not affected by inhibitors of the hematopoietic homing receptor or the cell-binding or heparin-binding functions of fibronectin. It is proposed that p37 may be a novel adhesive molecule expressed on the surface of a variety of hematopoietic cells that could participate in both homotypic and heterotypic interactions of stromal and progenitor cells.     

Imaging studies of the cadaver hand using transmission ultrasound

Ultrasonic transmission imaging has already demonstrated potential for evaluating structures in the hand. In this study, a cadaver hand was imaged using a transmission scanner with improved imaging capability. The hand was then frozen and serially sectioned and comparisons were made between the sectional anatomy and the corresponding image. Bone (in silhouette), muscle, cartilage, and tendon were visualized with high resolution.     

A distinctive interaction between memory and chronic daytime somnolence in asymptomatic APOE e4 homozygotes

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To correlate memory measures with a trait measure of chronic daytime somnolence in cognitively normal individuals with different gene doses of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) e4 allele, a common Alzheimer's disease susceptibility gene. DESIGN: Cross-sectional, exploratory study of cognitive abilities in APOE e4 homozygotes (HMZ) (n=42), heterozygotes (HTZ), (n=42) and noncarriers (NC) (n=42) who are matched for age, gender, educational level, and family history of dementia. SETTING: Tertiary care academic medical center. PARTICIPANTS: Cognitively normal residents of Maricopa County, Arizona who are 30-70 years of age, genotyped for APOE, and have no history of a sleep disorder INTERVENTIONS: N/A. MEASUREMENTS: Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and a battery of neuropsychological tests RESULTS: Age, education, gender, and insomnia complaints did not significantly differ among groups. Despite normal baseline memory scores, memory declined with increasing ESS on all eight memory measures in the HMZ, two of eight in the HTZ, and one of eight in the NC. Differences between HMZ and NC on the slope of memory decline with increasing ESS reached statistical significance on two verbal memory measures, AVLT Long-Term Memory (p=0.048) and Percent Delayed Recall (p=0.035). CONCLUSIONS: Chronic daytime somnolence is associated with a distinctive decline in verbal memory in cognitively normal APOE e4 HMZ, a group at particularly high risk of Alzheimer's disease. Additional studies are needed to confirm these exploratory findings and to determine the effects of acute somnolence on cognition in these genetic subgroups.
