OBJECTIVE: Nocturnal enuresis is a common pediatric problem, the etiology of which is unclear. In recent years, various studies have been published stating that children with nocturnal enuresis exhibit growth and skeletal maturation retardation. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we included 27 patients (16 boys, 11 girls) between the ages of 6 and 14 years who had presented with primary nocturnal enuresis (PNE) complaints. We included in the evaluation 19 healthy subjects (12 boys, 7 girls), who were the siblings of the children with PNE, as the control group. RESULTS: The patients in both groups were similar in chronological age, bone age, height and weight, with no significant difference between groups (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: The two groups in our study consisted of the same genetic background. Thus, our results were found to be different from the previous studies. We have concluded that there is no direct relationship between enuresis nocturnal and skeletal maturation. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of a 735-kV transmission line on the electric and magnetic field exposures of people living at the edge of the line's right of way. Exposure of 18 adults, mostly white-collar workers, living in different bungalows located 190-240 feet from the line (exposed subjects) was compared to that of 17 adults living in similar residences far away from any transmission line. Each subject carried a Positron meter for 24 hr during 1 workday, which measured 60-Hz electric and magnetic fields every minute. All measurements were carried out in parallel for exposed and unexposed subjects during the same weeks between September and December. During measurements the average loading on the line varied between 600 and 1100 A. The average magnetic field intensity while at home was 4.4 times higher among exposed subjects than unexposed (7.1 versus 1.6 mG, p = 0.0001) and 6.2 times higher when considering only the sleeping period (6.8 versus 1.1 mG, p = 0.0001). Based on the 24-hr measurement, average magnetic field exposure was three times higher among the exposed. Electric field intensity was also higher among the exposed while at home (26.3 versus 14.0 V/m, p = 0.03). Magnetic field intensity among the exposed was positively correlated with the loading on the line (r = 0.8, p = 0.001). Percentage of time above a magnetic field threshold (2 mG or 7.8 mG) was a good indicator to distinguish the two types of exposure.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

Natural killer cell regulation of implantation and early lung growth of H-ras-transformed 10T1/2 fibroblasts in mice 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We examined the relative role of the natural killer (NK) cell and H-ras gene in controlling metastasis formation using a novel assay for quantitating viable tumor cells entering and surviving in the lung for up to 13 days following i.v. tumor inoculation. This assay utilized the resistance to G418 sulfate conferred by transfection of the neoR gene into 10T1/2 fibroblasts along with activated H-ras. We had previously shown that the metastatic efficiency of T-24-H-ras-transformed 10T1/2 fibroblasts correlated with H-ras expression at the RNA level. In this paper we show that the NK cell could recognize H-ras-transformed fibroblasts in vivo and control experimental metastasis formation using NK-suppressed and -activated syngeneic C3H recipients. Evaluation of NK sensitivity in vitro of individual lines did not predict metastatic ability. However, NK susceptibility in vitro did inversely correlate with the ability of tumor cells to arrest and survive in the lung for the first 48 h after i.v. inoculation. Although the level of H-ras RNA correlated with the ultimate metastatic potential, it did not correlate with the initial rate of tumor cell pulmonary retention or clearing. Over the next 10 to 12 days, however, we detected a preferential survival and outgrowth of high H-ras-expressing variants, which correlated well with the ultimate metastatic ability but not NK susceptibility. These observations argue that the NK cell has its major effect early in the course of the disease, while subsequent tumor growth occurs preferentially in high H-ras-expressing cell lines. 相似文献

High serum fluoride (F-) in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) and
end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is associated with risk of renal
osteodystrophy and other bone changes. This study was done to determine F-
in normal healthy controls and patients with ESRD on haemodialysis (HD) or
peritoneal dialysis (PD). Seventeen healthy controls (12 males, 5 females)
and 39 ESRD patients on dialysis (17 males, 22 females) were recruited in
the study in a community with 47.4 +/- 3.28 microM/l (range 44-51 microM/l)
of F- content in drinking water. Control subjects showed a mean serum F-
concentration of 1.08 +/- 0.350 microM/l. Males in control group showed
slightly higher F- levels (1.15 +/- 0.334, range 0.55-1.9 microM/l) than
females (0.92 +/- 0.370, range 0.6-1.5 microM/l). Mean serum F-
concentration did not correlate significantly with age and sex among
control subjects, whereas such correlation was observed in patients with
ESRD on dialysis. Mean serum F- concentration was significantly higher in
patients on dialysis (2.67 +/- 1.09, range 0.8-5.2 microM/l) than normal
controls. When grouped according to sex, the mean serum F- concentration in
males (3.05 +/- 1.04, range 1.8-5.2 microM/l) was significantly higher than
females (2.38 +/- 1.08, range 0.8-5.2 microM/l). When patients were grouped
according to age, it was observed that F- concentration was significantly
higher in patients with age groups 21-70 (2.86 +/- 1.05) than those with
age group 13-20 years (1.42 +/- 0.531). Thus F- concentration correlated
with age and sex, being higher in males and above 20 years. Despite
appreciable clearance of F- (39-90%) across the peritoneum, patients on
CAPD showed higher serum F- concentration than those on HD (3.1 +/- 1.97 vs
2.5 +/- 1.137 microM/l). Of the total 39 patients on dialysis 39% had their
serum F- concentration above 3.0 microM/l, posing the risk of renal
osteodystrophy.

By applying morphometrical and quantitative double immunocytochemical techniques, differences in size and in amylase and chymotrypsinogen contents were found among pancreatic zymogen granules. These differences were present in granules of peri-insular and tele-insular acinar cells, the peri-insular ones displaying higher numbers of granules of smaller sizes. No correlation was found among enzyme contents in individual granules, nor was there a correlation between enzyme content and granule size. The results suggest that each individual secretory granule is formed in an independent way and that each enzyme is processed and packaged into granules independently. The differences among granules may be associated with nonparallel secretion, since this phenomenon has been reported in the intracellular processing of secretory enzymes. Pre-clerking of all patients undergoing elective general surgical operations was introduced at our hospital in an attempt to reduce an unacceptably high operation cancellation rate. A prospective audit has been performed on the effect of this policy on the cancellation rate. Before the introduction of pre-clerking there was a marked seasonal variation in the number of patients who failed to attend for surgery, which could be explained by absence on holiday. This seasonal variation disappeared after the start of pre-clerking clinics, but there has been no reduction in the number of cancellations for medical reasons. 相似文献

The ability of the skeletal musculature to use amino acids to build or renew constitutive proteins is gradually lost with age and this is partly due to a decline in skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity. Since long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC n –3PUFA) from fish oil are known to improve insulin-mediated glucose metabolism in insulin-resistant states, their potential role in regulating insulin-mediated protein metabolism was investigated in this study. Experimental data are based on a switchback design composed of three 5 week experimental periods using six growing steers to compare the effect of a continuous abomasal infusion of LC n –3PUFA-rich menhaden oil with an iso-energetic control oil mixture. Clamp and insulin signalling observations were combined with additional data from a second cohort of six steers. We found that enteral LC n –3PUFA potentiate insulin action by increasing the insulin-stimulated whole-body disposal of amino acids from 152 to 308 μmol kg−1 h−1 ( P = 0.006). The study further showed that in the fed steady-state, chronic adaptation to LC n –3PUFA induces greater activation ( P < 0.05) of the Akt–mTOR–S6K1 signalling pathway. Simultaneously, whole-body total flux of phenylalanine was reduced from 87 to 67 μmol kg−1 h−1 ( P = 0.04) and oxidative metabolism was decreased ( P = 0.05). We conclude that chronic feeding of menhaden oil provides a novel nutritional mean to enhance insulin-sensitive aspects of protein metabolism. 相似文献

X-linked spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) is caused by a CAG
repeat expansion in the first exon of the androgen receptor (AR) gene.
Disease-associated alleles (37-66 CAGs) change in length when transmitted
from parents to offspring, with a significantly greater tendency to shift
size when inherited paternally. As transgenic mice carrying human AR cDNAs
with 45 and 66 CAG repeats do not display repeat instability, we attempted
to model trinucleotide repeat instability by generating transgenic mice
with yeast artificial chromosomes (YACs) carrying AR CAG repeat expansions
in their genomic context. Studies of independent lines of AR YAC transgenic
mice with CAG 45 alleles reveal intergenerational instability at an overall
rate of approximately 10%. We also find that the 45 CAG repeat tracts are
significantly more unstable with maternal transmission and as the
transmitting mother ages. Of all the CAG/CTG repeat transgenic mice
produced to date the AR YAC CAG 45 mice are unstable with the smallest
trinucleotide repeat mutations, suggesting that the length threshold for
repeat instability in the mouse may be lowered by including the appropriate
flanking human DNA sequences. By sequence-tagged site content analysis and
long range mapping we determined that one unstable transgenic line has
integrated an approximately 70 kb segment of the AR locus due to
fragmentation of the AR YAC. Identification of the cis - acting elements
that permit CAG tract instability and the trans -acting factors that
modulate repeat instability in the AR YAC CAG 45 mice may provide insights
into the molecular basis of trinucleotide repeat instability in humans.
