This study aimed to assess lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes in goats naturally infected with Babesia ovis. Red blood cell count (RBC), hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, packed cell volume (PCV), malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT) activities and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were determined in 15 goats naturally infected with B. ovis as well as same number of healthy goats. The parasitological diagnosis was confirmed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis by amplifying a partial 18S rRNA gene sequence of B. ovis. Percentage of parasitemia varied from 0.01 to 1%. The activities of erythrocyte GSH-Px, SOD, CAT and TAC were significantly lower (p<0.05) in the infected goats than in healthy ones. MDA concentration in erythrocytes of infected goats was significantly higher in infected goats than in healthy ones (p?0.05). Severity of parasitemia showed a positive correlation with the MDA and negative correlation with PCV, SOD, CAT, GSH-Px and TAC. Also, MDA was negatively correlated with PCV, SOD, CAT, GSH-Px and TAC. The results of this study suggested that oxidative damage to RBCs may contribute to the pathogenesis of anemia in caprine babesiosis. 相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the protective potential of Feijoa fruit extract on cadmium chloride (CdCl2)-induced testicular injury and pituitary–gonadal axis. Adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: (a) control (normal saline, orally), (b) cadmium chloride (0.1 mg/kg, single dose, intraperitoneally), (c) Feijoa fruit extract (400 mg/kg, orally for 30 consecutive days) and (d) CdCl2 + Feijoa fruit extract. One day after receiving the last medicine, the LH, FSH, prolactin and testosterone concentration were assayed. Also, sperm parameters and tissue structure of the testis were evaluated. Administration of Feijoa fruit extract after CdCl2 injection in rats ameliorated sperm parameters such as sperm count, morphology, motility and sperm viability, increased levels of LH, FSH, prolactin and testosterone and improved testicular histology. According to the results of this study, it was shown that Feijoa can reduce the destructive side effects of CdCl2 on testicular tissue and sex hormones of the pituitary–gonadal pathway. 相似文献

Serum electrophoresis in cellulose acetate strip is a technique commonly used to separate the protein fractions. This technique allows detecting quantitative and qualitative changes in the serum proteins associated with different diseases. The aim of this study was to characterize the changes of the serum protein fractions produced in sheep suffering from babesiosis. Blood samples were collected from 52 healthy and naturally infected sheep with Babesia ovis. Serum total proteins were calculated, and serum electrophoresis was performed. The parasitological diagnosis was confirmed using polymerase chain reaction assay by amplifying a partial small subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequence of B. ovis. Mean values from total proteins and globulin fractions were significantly higher (P?<?0.05) than that observed for the healthy group. Compared to the healthy group, significant decrease (P?<?0.05) in the mean percentage of albumin in the infected group was determined. Results obtained in this study showed that B. ovis infection has caused albumin reduction and increased serum total protein and globulin level. 相似文献
