This study examined the laterality of spatial-form perception in normal adults using a cross-modal matching paradigm involving visual and tactile processing. Randomly generated eight-point and 12-point Vanderplas and Garvin (1959) patterns were used as the stimuli. In a visual-to-tactile task, a lateralized visual pattern was followed immediately by a haptic task requiring subjects to discriminate which of two simultaneously felt shapes matched the visual pattern. In a tactile-to-visual task, subjects decided which of two simultaneously felt shapes matched a lateralized visual pattern presented after haptic manipulation. There were no main effects for laterality or for sex differences. Matching accuracy was better in the visual-to-tactile task and for less complex stimuli. A visual field by feeling hand interaction showed best recognition accuracy when visual-feeling hand combinations on the same side of the body were used in the two matching tasks. These data reflect a stimulus-response compatibility explanation of spatial-form perception that is consistent with a behavioral and not a cerebral asymmetry model. 相似文献
Steroid hormones play an essential role in the ovarian cyclicity control and the progress of pregnancy. One of the crucial enzymes in the steroidogenesis is 3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase/Delta5-Delta4 isomerase (3betaHSD). The aim of the present study was to localize both 3betaHSD mRNA and protein in the ovary of pregnant swine. The immunolocalization of 3betaHSD was performed on paraplast sections of follicles and corpora lutea obtained on various days of gestation: 10, 18, 32, 50, 71 and 90 POST COITUM (p.c.). The obtained results were compared with those concerning follicular and luteal development in the ovaries of the cycling pig. Differences in 3betaHSD distribution between the ovarian follicles of cycling and pregnant pigs were concerned mainly in the pattern of immunostaining of the theca interna cells. In the porcine ovaries obtained on various days of pregnancy, some follicles exhibited positive immunostaining in most theca interna cells, while in other follicles this enzyme was expressed only in a relatively small percentage of theca interna cells. In the corpora lutea of the estrous cycle and pregnancy changes in the pattern of immunostaining were observed. At early and mid pregnancy (up to 71 day p.c.) 3betaHSD was observed in the large luteal cells while on day 71 p.c. the enzyme was present exclusively in the small luteal cells. The expression of 3betaHSD mRNA was detected by the use of RT-PCR technique in all investigated samples isolated at different stages of pregnancy. 相似文献
The suitability of a pulsed dye laser (504 nm) in experimental and clinical angioplasty was investigated. In an experimental study, the ablation thresholds were 3 J/cm2 +/- 8 (mean +/- standard deviation) for fibrofatty plaque and 25 J/cm2 for calcified tissues under saline. At a radiant exposure of 10 J/cm2 the etch rates were 1.7 microns per pulse +/- 0.3 for media, 2.8 microns/pulse +/- 0.4 for normal intima, and 3.9 microns/pulse +/- 1.1 for fibrofatty plaque (P less than .05). Pressure wave effects with a separation of tissue layers were predominantly localized at the internal elastic lamina. Thermal injury with vacuolations extended 15 microns +/- 6 into adjacent tissue. For clinical study, laser-assisted balloon angioplasty was performed in 10 patients (64 years +/- 14) with occlusions of peripheral arteries using a 9-F multifiber ring catheter. Lesion length ranged from 2 to 12 cm (mean, 7 cm). Laser angioplasty with an 80 mJ/pulse decreased the mean stenosis from 100% to 58% +/- 12% (P less than .005). The ankle-brachial index rose from a median of 0.48 to 0.88 (P less than .001). In 33% of patients, there were subintimal dissections after laser angioplasty. After a mean follow-up of 10.2 months, the overall clinical success was 70% with a primary patency of 78%. The over-the-wire approach with a pulsed dye laser may constitute a safe and feasible tool in laser angioplasty. 相似文献

und Intensivmedizin, diese Prophylaxe für alle US-An?sthesisten empfohlen.

The response to induction chemotherapy is an important prognostic factor in patients with nonmetastatic, locally advanced breast carcinomas. Assessment at mammography of the response of 60 breast cancers in 59 women was performed between 1974 and 1986. Responses were excellent in 13 tumors, moderate in 34, and poor in 13 (excellent moderate = 78%). Assessment of response of discrete masses in a fatty breast was easiest; assessment of response of tumor areas that were poorly defined-such as a focal area of architectural distortion or mass in dense breast parenchyma-was more difficult. Of 17 patients with excellent pathologic responses-that is, minimal or no residual tumor-15 (88%) had complete responses (no residual tumor) as determined with mammography, physical examination, or both. Mammography provides information complementary to physical examination and is essential in the accurate assessment of the response to chemotherapy of locally advanced breast cancer. 相似文献
Histamine release events were shown in a prospective randomized controlled trial in patients undergoing elective general surgery with an extraordinarily high incidence: 73 per cent. This high incidence was explained by several factors: — the sample size which was much greater than in previous studies — the improved plasma histamine assay — the precise definition of histamine release in clinical conditions and its measurement at the top of Bateman functions — the standardized induction of anaesthesia and preparation of the surgical patient — and finally the considerable number of cancer patients since more than 60% of the reactions >5 ng/ml occurred in this group which comprised only 20% of the study population.
Two cases of life-threatening anaphylactoid reactions occurred in this trial corresponding to an incidence of 1 per cent. This was — again — very high compared to previous epidemiological studies. Both cases were again cancer patients and occurred in the placebo group — information given by the external study advisory group for further treatment of the individual patient.
The data on the high incidence of histamine release including the high incidence of life-threatening reactions favourrationally a preoperative H1−+H2-prophylaxis with the drugs used in this study: dimetindene and cimetidine. The question of the incidence was one of the unsettled problems which led to this trial. Analysis of the first 180 patients already answered this question more than we had ever expected.
Six commercially available bacterial identification products were tested with Vibrio alginolyticus (12 strains), V. cholerae (30 strains), Photobacterium (Vibrio) damselae (10 strains), V. fluvialis (10 strains), V. furnissii (4 strains), V. hollisae (10 strains), V. metschnikovii (9 strains), V. mimicus (10 strains), V. parahaemolyticus (30 strains), and V. vulnificus (10 strains) to determine the accuracy of each system for identification. The products included API 20E, Crystal E/NF, MicroScan Neg ID2 and Rapid Neg ID3, and Vitek GNI+ and ID-GNB. Each product was tested only with those species that were listed in its database. Overall, the systems correctly identified 63.9, 80.9, 63.1, 73.6, 73.5, and 77.7% of the isolates to species level, respectively. Error rates ranged from 0.8% for the API 20E to 10.4% for the Rapid Neg ID3. The API 20E gave "no identification" for 13.1% of the isolates, while the Neg ID2, GNI+, ID-GNB, and Crystal were unable to identify 1.8, 2.9, 5.0, and 6.9%, respectively. For V. cholerae, specifically, accuracy ranged from 50.0 to 96.7%, with the API 20E having the worst performance and Crystal having the best. V. fluvialis presented the biggest challenge for the API 20E and the GNI+, with probabilities averaging 10%, while V. mimicus was a major problem with the Crystal E/NF, which identified none of the strains correctly. With the Neg ID2, correct answers were often obtained only after a modified inoculation of the panel with a bacterial suspension prepared with 0.85% NaCl. Additional tests required for identification often included growth in the absence of NaCl, which is not readily available in most clinical laboratories. The only product to correctly identify at least 90% of V. cholerae strains was the Crystal E/NF, and only three of the six products, the API 20E and both of the Vitek cards, correctly identified more than 90% of the V. parahaemolyticus strains. Thus, extreme care must be taken in the interpretation of answers from these six commercially available systems for the identification of Vibrio species. 相似文献
