The purpose of this study was to determine the value of MR imaging for the demonstration of masses in the tongue and floor of the mouth. Nine patients were prospectively examined with MR imaging after physical examination. Imaging protocol included T2 and contrast-enhanced and non-contrast-enhanced T1-weighted turbo spin-echo sequences, and the findings were compared with surgical and histopathological results. Histopathological examination revealed four squamous cell carcinomas, one adenoid cystic carcinoma, two tongue abscesses, and one chronic inflammatory change. The other case was diagnosed as hemangioma depending on clinical and imaging findings alone. In cases with squamous cell carcinoma, staging was done on the basis of MR imaging findings, and was found to be T4 in two cases, T3 in one case, and T2 in another. The primary role of MR imaging of the tongue and oropharynx is not to make a tissue diagnosis. Multiple deep biopsies are mandatory for the differentiation of other inflammatory and neoplastic lesions. Magnetic resonance imaging produces coronal and sagittal image planes to assess the volume and spread of the lesion and helps the surgeon determine the direction in which the biopsy should be performed. Background: Diagnosing cobalamin deficiency is critical, given the high prevalence of cobalamin deficiency particularly in developing countries. Measuring serum cobalamin levels is of limited diagnostic sensitivity, in other words its specificity and sensitivity are low. The present study investigated the changes in the levels of metabolic markers – plasma homocysteine, plasma methylmalonic acid (MMA) and urinary MMA – of cobalamin metabolism.

Methods: Plasma cobalamin and serum folic acid were studied in 206 pregnant women over the last four prenatal weeks. Plasma cobalamin, folic acid, homocysteine, MMA from umbilical cord blood and urinary MMA in newborns were studied.

Results: Plasma cobalamin values were low in 66% of the mothers. There was a positive correlation between maternal and neonatal plasma cobalamin values (r?=?0.72, p?<?0.001). B12 was strongly inversely associated with plasma MMA, urine MMA and plasma homocysteine. To predict cobalamin deficiency, sensitivities of plasma MMA, urinary MMA and homocysteine were 96.4%, 95.6% and 88.2%, respectively. And positive predictive values (PPV) were 96.2%, 96.9% and 86% for plasma MMA, urinary MMA and plasma homocysteine levels, respectively.

Conclusion: Plasma MMA and urinary MMA B12 are the most robust markers of cobalamin deficiency. As a non-invasive method, urinary MMA is a sensitive method in demonstrating cobalamin deficiency in the newborn.  相似文献

Purpose

QT dispersion (QTd) was shown to be an independent predictor of mortality in hemodialysis (HD) patients. It may be hypothesized that coronary artery calcification is related to QTd in HD patients because widespread calcification may also involve the cardiac conducting system in these patients. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationships of corrected QTd (QTcd) with coronary artery calcification score (CACS), carotid plaque score (CPS) and possible influence of these parameters on survival of HD patients.

Methods

Seventy-two HD patients (33 male, 39 female) were enrolled into the study. Mean age of the patients was 44 ± 12 years. Mean follow-up duration was 77 ± 24 months. CACS was determined by computed tomography. QTcd values were calculated as the difference of maximum and minimum QT intervals. Left ventricular mass index (LVMI) and CPS were measured by echocardiography.

Results

QTcd was significantly correlated with CACS (r = 0.233, p = 0.049), CPS (r = 0.354, p = 0.003) and LVMI (p = 0.011, r = 0.299). CPS was found to be significantly higher in the group with high QTcd (>60 ms) [2 (1–4) versus 0 (0–1), p = 0.02]. CACS was significantly correlated with age (r = 0.44, p < 0.001), LVMI (r = 0.52, p < 0.001) and CPS (r = 0.32, p = 0.003). In Kaplan–Meier analysis, survival of patients with high QTcd was significantly lower than the patients with low QTcd. In Cox regression analysis for predicting mortality, age, serum albumin and QTcd were found to be the independent predictors of mortality.

Conclusions

QTcd independently predicted mortality, and it was significantly associated with coronary artery calcification, left ventricular hypertrophy and atherosclerosis in HD patients.  相似文献

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) continues to be a significant public healthcare concern. Neuroinflammation that occurs in the secondary phase of TBI leads to cognitive and physical dysfunction. A number of therapeutic modalities have been evaluated in an attempt to find a suitable treatment. The only drug approved for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, pirfenidone, has been evaluated for its antifibrotic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant properties for various disorders, but this is the first study to examine its effects in an experimental TBI model. Twenty-four Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups: control, trauma, and pirfenidone. The two latter groups underwent experimental diffuse cortical injury mimicking TBI. Neurological assessment was performed using the Garcia test, histological analysis was performed to examine neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects, and biochemical analyses of neuron-specific enolase (NSE), S-100B, caspase-3, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances were performed. The pirfenidone group had a better Garcia test score (P=0.001), an increased anti-inflammatory effect (P<0.001), and an enhanced neuroprotective effect (P=0.007) along with decreased NSE, S100B, and TBARS levels compared to the trauma group. However, pirfenidone did not show a beneficial effect on caspase-3 levels. Pirfenidone may help decrease mortality and morbidity rates after TBI through its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.  相似文献

Self-healing is the capability of materials to repair themselves after the damage has occurred, usually through the interaction between molecules or chains. Physical and chemical processes are applied for the preparation of self-healing systems. There are different approaches for these systems, such as heterogeneous systems, shape memory effects, hydrogen bonding or covalent–bond interaction, diffusion, and flow dynamics. Self-healing mechanisms can occur in particular through heat and light exposure or through reconnection without a direct effect. The applications of these systems display an increasing trend in both the R&D and industry sectors. Moreover, self-healing systems and their energy storage applications are currently gaining great importance. This review aims to provide general information on recent developments in self-healing materials and their battery applications given the critical importance of self-healing systems for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In the first part of the review, an introduction about self-healing mechanisms and design strategies for self-healing materials is given. Then, selected important healing materials in the literature for the anodes of LIBs are mentioned in the second part. The results and future perspectives are stated in the conclusion section.  相似文献

In this study we reviewed 20 patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma to evaluate the oxidant and antioxidant status on tissue level. Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) and Catalase levels, two important antioxidant enzymes, and Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, a valuable index of lipid peroxidation, were compared in cancerous and normal tissues of the patients. In cancerous tissue SOD activities were significantly lower than in the normal tissue, while there was no significant difference in MDA levels and Catalase activities. It was also observed that SOD activities significantly decreased as the histopathologic malignancy grades increased in cancerous tissue. These changes in oxidant and antioxidant status in carcinomatous tissue of the larynx are considered to be of great interest.  相似文献
