The vascularity of 49 renal masses (26 malignant and 23 benign lesions) was investigated with duplex Doppler ultrasound. Doppler signals obtained at the margins of renal masses were defined as "tumor signals" when the Doppler-shifted frequency of the lesion exceeded the frequency shift in the ipsilateral main renal artery. These exceeded 2.5 kHz with a 3-MHz insonating frequency. Among the 26 renal masses that subsequently proved to be malignant, tumor signals were obtained in 15 of 18 (83%) untreated renal cell carcinomas, in three of four Wilms tumors, and in two patients with metastases to the kidney, but not in the one patient with lymphoma. None of the 23 benign renal masses demonstrated tumor signals. Tumor vascularity in malignant lesions gives rise to abnormal, high-velocity, Doppler-shifted signals that can help in the differential diagnosis of renal masses. 相似文献

In human in-vitro fertilization (IVF)-embryo transfer, the in-vitro culture
environment differs from in-vivo conditions in that the oxygen
concentration is higher, and in such conditions the mouse embryos show a
higher concentration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in simple culture
media. ROS are believed to cause damage to cell membranes and DNA
fragmentation in somatic cells. This study was conducted to ascertain the
level of H2O2 concentration within embryos and the morphological features
of cell damage induced by H2O2. A total of 62 human oocytes and embryos (31
fragmented, 15 non-fragmented embryos, 16 unfertilized oocytes) was
obtained from the IVF-embryo transfer programme. The relative intensity of
H2O2 concentrations within embryos was measured using
2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate by Quanti cell 500 fluorescence
imaging and DNA fragmentation was observed with transmission electron
microscopy and an in-situ apoptosis detection kit. The H2O2 concentrations
were significantly higher in fragmented embryos (72.21 +/- 9.62, mean +/-
SEM) compared to non-fragmented embryos (31.30 +/- 3.50, P < 0.05) and
unfertilized oocytes (30.75 +/- 2.67, P < 0.05). Apoptosis was observed
only in fragmented embryos, and was absent in non-fragmented embryos.
Electron microscopic findings confirmed apoptotic bodies and cytoplasmic
condensation in the fragmented blastomeres. We conclude that there is a
direct relationship between increased H2O2 concentration and apoptosis, and
that further studies should be undertaken to confirm these findings.

Acinetobacter baumannii and Acinetobacter DNA group 3 are members of the so-called A. calcoaceticus-A. baumannii complex and are important nosocomial pathogens. Multiresistance in these organisms is increasingly frequent, and alternative treatment options are needed. The beta-lactamase inhibitors clavulanate, sulbactam and tazobactam have intrinsic activity against Acinetobacter strains. In the present study, broth microdilution was used to assess the in-vitro activities of currently available beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor combinations and sulbactam alone against 469 Acinetobacter isolates (A. baumannii, n=395; Acinetobacter DNA group 3, n=74) collected from various laboratories in Germany. Fixed concentrations and fixed ratios of beta-lactamase inhibitors were used. Sulbactam-containing combinations (susceptibility rates of 90.4-92.7% for A. baumannii and 97.3-100% for Acinetobacter DNA group 3) and sulbactam alone were superior to clavulanate- and tazobactam-containing combinations. The activity of sulbactam-containing combinations against members of the A. calcoaceticus-A. baumannii complex was conferred exclusively by the intrinsic activity of the beta-lactamase inhibitor and did not result from enhanced beta-lactam activity. Testing with the inhibitor added at a fixed ratio of inhibitor to beta-lactam appeared to give more reliable results than testing at a fixed concentration of the inhibitor. With the objective of developing a biodegradable ureteric stent, various polylactides were analyzed and grafted with a clinically adapted surface. Stent moulding was performed by CESP technology (Controlled Expansion of Saturated Polymers), which is not based on high temperature but gas-loading under high pressure which induces a foamy bulk structure. The hydrolytically biodegradable, synthetic homo- and copolymers poly(D,L-lactide) (PDLLA), poly(D,L-lactide-co-trimethylene-carbonate) (PDLLA-co-TMC), poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PDLLA-co-Gly) as derivatives of lactic acid or glycolic acid and surface modifications with hydroxyethylene-methacrylate (HEMA) and oligoethyleneoxidemonomethacrylate (OEOMA) were analyzed with regard to cytotoxicity and cell adhesion. Methacrylates have minimized protein and cell adhesion and degradation of non-toxic products. All polymers exhibited a high degree of biocompatibility and cell adhesion was markedly reduced following HEMA grafting. A 3 cm and 7 Charrière prototype of the stent was moulded from PDLLA-co-TMC by CESP-technology, and grafted with HEMA by means of plasma-induced polymerization. Finally, the stents were implanted into female sheep, following unilateral ureterotomy. Regular blood and urine analysis as well as ultrasound and the final autopsy revealed no pathological findings. Histopathological analysis exhibited a regular epithelium without any changes being determined by contact to the stent, and a good regeneration of all layers in the area of anastomosis. 相似文献
