Summary Five different isolates of influenza C virus which were isolated over a period of 32 years and from four different continents were compared by RNA genome oligonucleotide fingerprinting analyses. The earliest isolate of influenza C virus was reported in 1949 byTaylor (19) and served as a reference strain for this study.The results obtained using this technique of comparing relatedness between viruses clearly showed that all strains are distinct. However, the similarities in the pattern of the oligonucleotide fingerprints are marked for the more recent virus isolates (1966–1979), whereas the reference strain C/Taylor shows more pronounced differences.The results are consistant with the high degree of serological crossreaction amongst influenza C viruses isolated over a long period of time, a property which sets this group of viruses apart from type A and B members of the orthomyxoviridae.With 3 Figures  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Our aims in the present study were to estimate the influences of pain and urinary symptoms on quality of life, and to determine which of these two variables has the most predictive power with respect to quality of life in young men with chronic prostatitis-like symptoms. METHODS: Chronic prostatitis-like symptoms were measured by the National Institutes of Health-Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index. Of the 28,841 men aged 20 years who lived in the study community, 18,495 men (a response rate 64.1%) agreed to participate in the study. A total of 1057 men who complained of symptoms indicative of chronic prostatitis were included in the study. The influences of pain and urinary symptoms on quality of life were determined using logistic regression analysis. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to estimate the predictive ability of each of these variables with respect to quality of life. RESULTS: Results from multivariate analysis showed that both pain and urinary symptoms were associated with an increased likelihood of impaired quality of life, although pain contributed more to a reduced quality of life than urinary symptoms. Relative to men who experienced mild pain, men who experienced moderate pain had a 3.9-fold risk of poor quality of life (odds ratio [OR], 3.87; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.86-5.23; P < 0.001) and those who experienced severe pain had a 15.7-fold risk of reduced quality of life (OR, 15.68; 95% CI, 6.59-37.35; P < 0.001). Moderate urinary symptoms were associated with a 1.4-fold risk of bother (OR, 1.41; 95% CI, 1.01-1.99; P < 0.001) and severe urinary symptoms were associated with 2.4-fold risk (OR, 2.39; 95% CI, 1.37-4.12; P < 0.001), relative to mild urinary symptoms. Comparison of the effects of pain and urinary symptoms showed that pain severity had the most predictive power for bother, quality of life, and quality-of-life impact. The areas under the ROC curves for bother, quality of life, and quality-of-life impact were 71.3%, 69.3% and 72.5%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Urinary symptoms and pain might be associated with an increased likelihood of impaired quality of life in young men with chronic prostatitis-like symptoms. In addition, our findings suggest that pain severity is the most influential variable for determining quality of life in this population.  相似文献

The skeletal effects from intensive exercise throughout puberty are undefined. Forty-five female gymnasts and 52 controls were studied over 3 years, including a heredity aspect. The effects of size, maturity, exercise, and diet were identified using a multilevel regression model. Results demonstrated sustained skeletal benefits resulting from exercise throughout all stages of pubertal development. INTRODUCTION: Weight-bearing exercise is beneficial for peak bone mass development. However, whether skeletal benefits achieved with exercise are maintained if training remains intensive throughout the pubertal years is not entirely clear. The influence of familial resemblance for bone mass remains undefined in physically active versus inactive children. The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term influences of impact-loading exercise on bone quantity and quality in young females after controlling for growth, maturation, and hereditary factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: At baseline, 45 gymnasts (G) and 52 normally active controls (C) 8-17 years of age were recruited. Anthropometry, diet, physical activity, and quantitative ultrasound (QUS) were measured annually for 3 consecutive years. DXA scans of total body (TB) and lumbar spine (LS) bone mineral content (BMC) and density (BMD) were taken three times at 1-year intervals. A multilevel regression model was fitted, and the independent effects of body size, maturity, physical activity, and diet were identified over time. To assess heredity influences, 27 G mothers and 26 C mothers volunteered for cross-sectional measurements of anthropometry, QUS, and BMC/BMD. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Gymnasts were smaller and lighter (as were their mothers) than controls, but they had significantly higher QUS and axial and appendicular BMC and BMD, with > 170 g more bone mineral in TB across puberty (after adjustment for maturity [years from peak height velocity], height, weight, energy, and protein intake). Gymnasts had up to 24-51% higher BMC and 13-28% higher BMD, depending on skeletal site. These results provide evidence of sustained skeletal benefits from impact-loading exercise, which are unlikely to result entirely from heredity, throughout pubertal years.  相似文献

Personal microenvironmental cooling has been used to enhance safety and extend the work capacity of laborers wearing protective clothing. Previous studies of air and liquid cooling have used either very low work rates or high environmental temperatures. Emergency work tasks frequently require high work rates and occur in moderate ambient temperatures. The purpose of this research was to examine the efficacy of intermittent personal cooling during rest and to compare liquid and air cooling systems in subjects engaged in hard work. Fourteen volunteers wearing chemical protective clothing performed treadmill walking at a metabolic rate of 430 W for 45 min followed by a 15-min rest at a wet-bulb globe temperature of 25 degrees C. During rest, volunteers received either no cooling, air cooling, or liquid cooling. Both cooling systems partially alleviated heat strain and increased work time with the air system offering slightly more effective cooling.  相似文献

Background  

The underlying causes of spinal manipulation hypoalgesia are largely unknown. The beneficial clinical effects were originally theorized to be due to biomechanical changes, but recent research has suggested spinal manipulation may have a direct neurophysiological effect on pain perception through dorsal horn inhibition. This study added to this literature by investigating whether spinal manipulation hypoalgesia was: a) local to anatomical areas innervated by the lumbar spine; b) correlated with psychological variables; c) greater than hypoalgesia from physical activity; and d) different for A-delta and C-fiber mediated pain perception.  相似文献

We previously reported that initiation of metamorphosis of larvae of Lytechinus pictus is negatively regulated by nitric oxide (NO) and cGMP. We have examined the expression of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and cGMP in cells of the developing larva. A section of the post-oral ciliary band of feeding larvae includes neural cells defined by their expression of both NOS and the echinoderm neural-specific antibody 1E11. These neurons project processes to the pre-oral neuropile during larval development. Larvae regenerated this section of the ciliary band after its excision, complete with NOS-defined neurons that projected again to the pre-oral neuropile. Excision of ectoderm containing the post-oral ciliary band prevented a behavioral and morphogenetic response of competent larvae to biofilm, and delayed initiation of metamorphosis. Elevated cGMP levels were detected in several larval and juvenile cell types prior to metamorphosis. Treatment of larvae with ODQ, an inhibitor of soluble guanylate cyclase, decreased cGMP levels and induced metamorphosis while a generator of NO counteracted this effect, indicating inhibition of metamorphosis by NO operates via interaction with soluble guanylate cyclase. We discuss these observations, proposing that the NOS-defined neurons in the post-oral ciliary band have a chemosensory function during settlement and metamorphosis that involves morphologically specialized ectoderm and manipulation of fluid flow. We provide a tentative cellular model of how environmental signals may be transduced into a metamorphic response.  相似文献
