Hip arthroplasty after failed internal fixation of the trochanteric fractures in aged patients with co-existent osteoporosis]

The authors present the results of hip arthroplasty of 67 patients treated after failed internal fixation of the osteoporotic, trochanteric fractures of the femur, which were primary stabilised with angular plate AO in 39 patients and with dynamic hip screw (DHS) in 28 patients. In the discussed material 16 persons were male and 51 female, in the age between 51 and 83 years old. According to the Evans classification in 4 cases we diagnosed type I of fracture, in 10--type II, 31--type III and in 22--type IV. Hip arthroplasty was made from the 3rd to the 39th week after primary fixation of the fracture. In 42 patients we made total hip arthroplasty, in 14 cases Austin-Moore hemiarthroplasty, and in 11 patients bipolar arthroplasty. According to the Postel and Merle d'Aubigne classification there were obtained 29 very good, 21 good and 17 satisfactory results.     

Long-term survival after resection of giant chondrosarcoma of the chest wall weighing 9.6 kg.

The case of a 43 year old male with giant chest wall tumor weighing 9.6 kg verified as chondrosarcoma is described. The patient was treated by multiple (six times) surgical procedures including left costopleuropneumonectomy and left subclavian artery end-to-end anastomosis between 1998 and 2005. Despite the palliative character of surgery, he achieved long-term survival but finally refused next surgery due to the risk of left upper limb amputation and died a few months later.     

Disturbances of cell-mediated immunity in ornithosis

27 cases of ornithosis were observed during an epidemia in 1980 in Kielce and subsequently followed with respect to immunological characteristics of peripheral blood lymphocytes. Blastic transformation of these cells was tested after stimulation in vitro with three different mitogens. Identification of peripheral blood T and B lymphocytes was done using rosette tests (E,EA,EAC) and the occurrence of surface immunoglobulins was determined by the immunofluorescent method with polyvalent anti-immunoglobulin serum. The counts of T and B lymphocytes in the peripheral blood were normal throughout the whole period of the observation, but from the 3rd week on a significant impairment of 3H-thymidine incorporation into the cells stimulated with Con A was observed, and from the 10th week on, this impairment appeared also in cells stimulated with PHA and PWM. These observations revealed considerable disturbances in cell-mediated reactivity in patients with ornithosis and seem to be connected with chronic infection with Chlamydia psittaci.     

Microorganisms isolated from clinical specimens of patients from the Department of Thoracic Surgery

The clinical specimens received from patients hospitalized in Department of Thoracic Surgery between 1997 and 2001 were microbiologically examined. The main specimen for microbiological examination was pleural fluid (median 34%). The frequency of specimens from bronchial tree increased significantly (from 4% to 26%) with concurrent decrease of sputum (from 29% to 6%). Among isolated pathogens, Gram negative rods were the most frequent (median 48%) and Pseudomonas sp. was the main pathogen among them. Occurrence of staphylococci was median 22% and Staphylococcus aureus, with a little decrease in analyzed period, was still the main Gram positive pathogen. Simultaneously the occurrence of MRSA in the last three years dropped three times. The number of isolations of yeasts have risen from 5.8% to 10.3%.     

Aging of the erythrocyte. X. Immunoelectrophoretic studies on the denaturation of superoxide dismutase

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) content estimated by rocket immunoelectrophoresis did not differ in various density (age) fractions of bovine erythrocytes though its specific activity decreased with increasing cell density. No changes were found, either, in the crossed immunoelectrophoretic pattern of SOD with increasing red cell age. Effects of different denaturing agents on the immunoelectrophoretic pattern and activity of the enzyme were compared, including H₂O₂ and free radicals generated by ionizing radiation. The yield for inactivation was higher than that for loss of antigenic properties in all cases studied which could correspond to the in vivo situation. However, changes in electro-phoretic mobility were revealed for all the denaturing agents, which is contrary to a main causative role of these agents in the in vivo inactivation of SOD. The results suggest spontaneous “subtle denaturation” as a chief cause for the SOD inactivation during erythrocyte aging.     

Chronic Shigella flexneri infection preceding development of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome

Shigella sp. is known to be an important cause of diarrhea in homosexual men, although chronic infection is infrequently recognized. We describe recurrent and relapsing symptomatic infection due to Shigella flexneri in a human immunodeficiency virus-infected homosexual man subsequently developed acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome may be prone to developing chronic shigellosis because of impaired intestinal cell-mediated immunity.     

Curcumin and Its Potential Impact on Microbiota

Curcumin is one of the most frequently researched herbal substances; however, it has been reported to have a poor bioavailability and fast metabolism, which has led to doubts about its effectiveness. Curcumin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and has demonstrated favorable health effects. Nevertheless, well-reported in vivo pharmacological activities of curcumin are limited by its poor solubility, bioavailability, and pharmacokinetic profile. The bidirectional interactions between curcumin and gut microbiota play key roles in understanding the ambiguity between the bioavailability and biological activity of curcumin, including its wider health impact.     

Human Cell Organelles in SARS-CoV-2 Infection: An Up-to-Date Overview

Since the end of 2019, the whole world has been struggling with the life-threatening pandemic amongst all age groups and geographic areas caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which has led to more than 468 million cases and over 6 million deaths reported worldwide (as of 20 March 2022), is one of the greatest threats to human health in history. Meanwhile, the lack of specific and irresistible treatment modalities provoked concentrated efforts in scientists around the world. Various mechanisms of cell entry and cellular dysfunction were initially proclaimed. Especially, mitochondria and cell membrane are crucial for the course of infection. The SARS-CoV-2 invasion depends on angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), transmembrane serine protease 2 (TMPRSS2), and cluster of differentiation 147 (CD147), expressed on host cells. Moreover, in this narrative review, we aim to discuss other cell organelles targeted by SARS-CoV-2. Lastly, we briefly summarize the studies on various drugs.     

Spatial Dispersion in Hypercrystal Distributed Feedback Lasing

This work is a first approach to investigate the role of spatial dispersion in photonic hypercrystals (PHCs). The scope of the presented analysis is focused on exploiting nonlocality, which can be controlled by appropriate design of the structure, to obtain new light generation effects in a distributed feedback (DFB) laser based on PHC, which are not observable under weak spatial dispersion. Here, we use effective medium approximation and our original model of threshold laser generation based on anisotropic transfer matrix method. To unequivocally identify nonlocal generation phenomena, the scope of our analysis includes comparison between local and nonlocal threshold generation spectra, which may be obtained for different geometries of PHC structure. In particular, we have presented that, in the presence of strong spatial dispersion, it is possible to obtain spectrally shifted Bragg wavelengths of TE- and TM-polarization spectra, lowered generation threshold levels for both light polarizations, generation of light of selected light polarization (TE or TM), or simultaneous generation of TE- and TM-polarized waves at different frequencies with controllable spectral separation, instead of single mode operation anticipated with local approach.     

Sexual Functioning in Female Patients Undergoing Surgical Treatment for Colorectal Cancer—A Single-Center,Prospective Triple Timepoint Yearly Follow-Up

The study was aimed at assessing the quality of sexual functioning in female patients having undergone surgical treatment for cancer depending on the type of surgery. The prospective cohort consisted of 48 female patients (23 patients with stoma [A2] and 25 patients with maintained continuity of the GI tract [A1]). Study methods included a diagnostic survey and the analysis of medical records of patients. Research tools consisted of a standardized FSFI questionnaire and a proprietary form for evaluation of sociodemographic data. Measurements were performed at threetimepoints: On the day before the surgery (Measurement I) as well as six and 12 months after the surgery (Measurements II and III, respectively). Statistically significant differences in results were observed in Measurements II and III in the subscales of arousal (II:p = 0.0068, III:p = 0.0018), lubrication (II:p = 0.0221, III:p = 0.0134), orgasm (II:p = 0.0044, III:p = 0.0021), satisfaction (II:p = 0.0021, III:p = 0.0433), and pain/discomfort (II:p = 0.0343, III:p = 0.0473). In all cases, lower scores corresponding to lower quality of sexual functioning were observed in patients in whom stoma had been performed. Statistically significant differences in sexual functioning were observed at Measurements II and III in each group, with the results being significantly (p > 0.05) worse in patients having undergone Hartmann’s procedure or abdominoperineal resection). Variables significantly affecting self-assessed sexual satisfaction included marital status, age, and modality of neoadjuvant treatment. Restoration of the continuity of the gastrointestinal tract is a chance for better self-assessment of the patient’s quality of life as regards sexual functioning.
