Facial disfigurement can be a consequence of treatment for oral or oropharyngeal cancer. Patients' concerns about appearance and the impact this has on quality of life are very important, but are often not recognised in a busy outpatient clinic. We aimed to assess concerns about appearance using the University of Washington Quality of Life questionnaire version 4 (UW-QoL) and the Patient Concerns Inventory (PCI), a self-administered questionnaire that allows patients to choose what they would like to discuss in their consultation. Prospective data were collected from 204 patients who attended routine follow-up clinics from August 2007 to mid-July 2009. Fifty-seven percent were male, 68% had cancer of the oral cavity, 78% had clinical T1-T2 tumours, 19% had node positive tumours, 44% had had radiotherapy since diagnosis, and 48% had had free-flap reconstructive surgery. They all completed the questionnaires using touch-screen computer technology at 454 clinic appointments. Appearance was raised on the inventory at 9% (42/454) of clinics, and at 10% (47/454) it was indicated as a serious problem on the UW-QoL questionnaire. Concerns about appearance were raised on the inventory or were shown to be a serious problem on the UW-QoL in 14% (64/454) of patients. The main factors associated with those who reported concerns about appearance were age (younger patients), sex (female), T stage (III and IV), and site (oropharynx). Patients who choose concerns about appearance for discussion on the UW-QoL questionnaire and not on the PCI risk being missed if only the PCI is completed. Embryo micromanipulation was developed after introduction of microinjection to overcome infertility. Embryo micromanipulation may be performed at any embryo stage from pronuclear to blastocyst. The technique started out as basic and turned out to be increasingly more complex. Embryo micromanipulation at the cleavage-stage includes a wide range of techniques, from opening the zona pellucida in order to improve the chance of implantation, to removing detrimental components from the embryo to enhance embryo development or blastomeres for preimplantation genetic diagnosis and embryo splitting. Evaluating the impact(s) of different micromanipulation techniques on epigenetics of the embryo and considering quality control during these techniques are important issues in this regard. This review aims to discuss the micromanipulation of cleavage-stage embryos in clinical assisted reproductive technology (ART).

Obstruction remains as an important cause of failure in the eruption of a tooth. In this article, a 15-year-old girl was presented with retained upper left primary canine (63) and first primary molar (64), while the contralateral permanent canine (13) and premolars (14 and 15) have erupted. Upon radiographic examination, a mass which was diagnosed later to be compound odontome was detected. The treatment consisted of surgical removal of the odontome, extraction of the primary canine (63) and left permanent canine (23), and transplantation of the permanent canine (23). Achieving good quality of products from plastic injection moulding processes is very challenging, since the process comprises many affecting parameters. Common defects such as warpage are hard to avoid, and the defective parts will eventually go to waste, leading to unnecessary costs to the manufacturer. The use of recycled material from postindustrial waste has been studied by a few researchers. However, the application of an optimisation method by which to optimise processing parameters to mould parts using recycled materials remains lacking. In this study, Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) methods were conducted on thick plate parts moulded using virgin and recycled low-density polyethylene (LDPE) materials (100:0, 70:30, 60:40 and 50:50; virgin to recycle material ratios) to find the optimal input parameters for each of the material ratios. Shrinkage in the x and y directions increased in correlation with the recycled ratio, compared to virgin material. Meanwhile, the tensile strength of the thick plate part continued to decrease when the recycled ratio increased. R30 (70:30) had the optimum shrinkage in the x direction with respect to R0 (100:0) material where the shrinkage increased by 24.49% (RSM) and 33.20% (PSO). On the other hand, the shrinkage in the y direction for R30 material increased by 4.48% (RSM) and decreased by 2.67% (PSO), while the tensile strength of R30 (70:30) material decreased by 0.51% (RSM) and 2.68% (PSO) as compared to R0 (100:0) material. Validation tests indicated that the optimal setting of processing parameter suggested by PSO and RSM for R0 (100:0), R30 (70:30), R40 (60:40) and R50 (50:50) was less than 10%. 相似文献

This paper investigated the effects of Pr6O11 and Co3O4 on the electrical properties of ZnO-BaTiO3 varistor ceramics. The Pr6O11 doping has a notable influence on the characteristics of the nonlinear coefficient, varistor voltage, and leakage current where the values varied from 2.29 to 2.69, 12.36 to 68.36 V/mm and 599.33 to 548.16 µA/cm2, respectively. The nonlinear varistor coefficient of 5.50 to 7.15 and the varistor voltage of 7.38 to 8.10 V/mm was also influenced by the use of Co3O4 as a dopant. When the amount of Co3O4 was above 0.5 wt.%, the leakage current increased from 202.41 to 302.71 μA/cm2. The varistor ceramics with 1.5 wt.% Pr6O11 shows good nonlinear electrical performance at higher breakdown voltage and reduced the leakage current of the ceramic materials. Besides, the varistor sample that was doped with 0.5 wt.% Co3O4 was able to enhance the nonlinear electrical properties at low breakdown voltage with a smaller value of leakage current. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: The role of hemolysis in the pathophysiology of neonatal jaundice (NNJ) in patients with glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency has been questioned recently. The aim of the present study was to determine the contribution of hemolysis to the pathophysiology of jaundice in Malay neonates with G6PD deficiency and NNJ. METHODS: Four groups of babies were included in the study: (i) G6PD deficient with NNJ; (ii) G6PD deficient without NNJ; (iii) G6PD normal with NNJ; and (iv) normal controls. Babies with other known causes of jaundice were excluded from the study. All subjects underwent the following investigations on day 3-5 after birth: hemoglobin level (Hb), serum bilirubin level, carboxyhemoglobin (CO-Hb) concentration, reticulocyte count and full blood picture. The results of the investigations were compared between the groups using SPSS version 11. RESULTS: Babies with G6PD and jaundice had a similar percentage of CO-Hb to babies with G6PD without NNJ or babies with normal G6PD and NNJ (1.76 +/- 0.40% vs 1.66 +/- 0.31% and 1.67 +/- 0.28%, respectively; P: 0.23 and 0.41, respectively). Total Hb levels and reticulocyte counts were not significantly different between the groups. The blood film showed more (even though not reaching significance) hemolysis in the G6PD patients but results of the blood film were very similar for G6PD patients with and those without NNJ. CONCLUSION: Hemolysis is not a main determinant of neonatal jaundice in G6PD-deficient babies. 相似文献
