Mucinous cystadenoma mimicking simple renal parenchymal cyst in a horseshoe kidney

We report a case of mucinous cystadenoma in a horseshoe kidney which radiologically resembled a simple renal cyst. In the published literature, three cases of mucinous cystadenoma of renal origin have been reported. Although these tumors are believed to originate from the renal pelvis, the cyst in the present case originated from renal parenchyma. The significance of this particular case is the radiological features, which mimic a simple renal parenchymal cyst and contribute to the histopathological definition of an extremely rare disease.     

Cardiac rhabdomyoma of a neonate: An autopsy case report

A primigravida delivered a cyanosed female infant with a very low Apgar score. Cardiac anomaly of the fetus was detected at 32 weeks of gestation by ultrasonography. The baby died on the day of delivery. Autopsy revealed multiple tumor masses in the interventricular septum and ventricular walls. The tumor originating from the interventricular septum was the largest and measured 3.7 × 3 cm. Histologically, the tumor was composed of large polygonal glycogen-laden cells and ‘spider-cells’. Eosinophilic giant histiocytic cells were also observed in the spleen. Ultrastructural features of the tumor cells correlated with those of typical cardiac muscle cells.     

Serum fibronectin in neonatal sepsis: Is it valuable in early diagnosis and outcome prediction?

The value of the serum fibronectin level in early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis and as a prognostic indicator was investigated. The serum fibronectin levels and Töllner's sepsis scores of 45 neonates who were hospitalized for the suspicion of infection and of 20 healthy neonates as controls were evaluated. Depending on the findings it was concluded that serum fibronectin level varies according to the gestational age, and that the serum fibronectin level is a useful acute phase reactant in the early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis. It can also be used as a prognostic indicator in neonatal sepsis.     

Rupture of ectopic pregnancy implanted in the bladder

A 34-year-old woman was diagnosed by ultrasound with a six-week ectopic pregnancy with implantation of the gestational sac in the bladder wall. She was initially treated with methotrexate 50 mg/m(2) i.m. Although a 22% reduction in the levels of beta-hCG was observed at first, there was a rupture of gestational sac. The patient underwent an emergency laparotomy with a resulting partial cystectomy, and made an uneventful recovery.     

Echinococcosis involving the liver, retrovesical and seminal vesicle presented with syncope

Hydatid disease of the urogenital system, especially of the retroperitoneum and seminal vesicles, is a very rare condition. We report a case of hydatid disease located in the liver, retrovesical region and seminal vesicle that was diagnosed incidentally while investigating the etiology of syncope. Transabdominal and transrectal ultrasonography revealed hypoecoic multicystic masses which had thin septations and walls in the liver, retrovesical region and seminal vesicle. Abdominal computed tomography examination showed multicystic low attenuation masses in the same region. Pelvic magnetic resonance image findings revealed multiple cystic masses in the retrovesical region and the right seminal vesicle. In conclusion, the diagnosis of hydatid disease should be kept in mind with patients who have cystic lesions in seminal vesicle and retrovesical region.
