Albright"s hereditary osteodystrophy (AHO) is a complex genetic disorder characterized by brachydactyly, gonadotropin resistance, hypothyroidism, pseudohypoparathyroid syndrome and heterotopic ossification. Heterotopic ossification rarely occurs in the maxillofacial region. In this article, we present such a case, describe the etiology, characteristics and treatment of AHO and suggest a potential role of an inhibitor of bone formation such as fetuin in preventing recurrence of aberrant ossification.  相似文献

Free clinics provide free primary care to the under or uninsured and have been playing an important role in serving the socio-economically disadvantaged. Free clinic patients represent a group of people who experience significant barriers to receiving diabetes prevention and intervention. This study examined diabetes attitudes among free clinic patients and volunteers. English or Spanish speaking patients and volunteers (N = 384), aged 18 years or older completed a self-administered survey. Diabetic patients and volunteers shared similar levels of diabetes attitudes compared to non-diabetic patients. Among patients, ethnicity, education level, diabetes education, and family history affected diabetes attitudes. Among volunteers, diabetes education was an important factor associated with positive diabetes attitudes. Whether the volunteer is a healthcare professional or student was related only to one aspect of diabetes attitudes, seriousness of type 2 diabetes. The results, indicating free clinic diabetic patients and volunteers shared similar levels of diabetes attitudes, were positive for maintaining and developing diabetes education programs at a free clinic. Unfortunately, the average length of volunteering at this free clinic was short and student volunteers likely leave the clinic upon graduation. Future research should examine issues of volunteer retention in free clinics. Diabetes education for patients may need to be diversified according to ethnicity, family history of diabetes, and educational level. Finally, non-healthcare professional volunteers could potentially be involved in diabetes education at a free clinic.  相似文献

The mechanisms behind autoimmune reaction to nervous system antigens in autism are not understood. We assessed the reactivity of sera from 50 autism patients and 50 healthy controls to specific peptides from gliadin and the cerebellum. A significant percentage of autism patients showed elevations in antibodies against gliadin and cerebellar peptides simultaneously. For examining cross-reaction between dietary proteins and cerebellar antigens, antibodies were prepared in rabbits, and binding of rabbit anti-gliadin, anti-cerebellar peptides, anti-MBP, anti-milk, anti-egg, anti-soy and anti-corn to either gliadin- or cerebellar-antigen-coated wells was measured. In comparison to anti-gliadin peptide binding to gliadin peptide at 100%, the reaction of anti-cerebellar peptide to gliadin peptide was 22%, whereas the binding of anti-myelin basic protein (MBP), anti-milk, anti-egg and anti-soy to gliadin was less than 10%. Further examination of rabbit anti-gliadin (EQVPLVQQ) and anti-cerebellar (EDVPLLED) 8 amino acid (AA) peptides with human serum albumin (HSA) and an unrelated peptide showed no binding, but the reaction of these antibodies with both the cerebellar and gliadin peptides was greater than 60%. This cross-reaction was further confirmed by DOT-immunoblot and inhibition studies. We conclude that a subgroup of patients with autism produce antibodies against Purkinje cells and gliadin peptides, which may be responsible for some of the neurological symptoms in autism.  相似文献

Studies suggest that some lead-induced toxic effects may occur through free radical production and oxidative stress. This study examined the relationship between brain histopathological alterations and oxidative stress in subchronic lead exposure. Male Albino rats received lead acetate at 0.01%, 0.05% and 0.1% w/v in their drinking water for 30 days. Animals given sodium acetate (0.1% w/v) served as control in the same period. At the end of exposure, blood-lead levels, blood catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and malondialdehyde (MDA) content (in blood and brain) were measured. The brain tissue samples were prepared and analysed by light and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that, the blood-lead levels in treated animals were higher in comparison with control. CAT and SOD activities in animals treated with 0.01% and 0.05% w/v did not increase in comparison with control (P > 0.05) but these values were higher in animals treated with 0.1% w/v lead acetate (P < 0.01). MDA content in blood and brain of animals treated with lead acetate 0.1% w/v, increased significantly (P <0.01), but these values were not significantly increased in other treated animals. No major histopathological alterations were detected in the brains of animals treated with lead acetate at 0.01% and 0.05% w/v. In animals treated with lead acetate 0.1% w/v, demyelinization and collagenous scar formation with neuronal atrophy in hippocampus region was observed. It is concluded that lead acetate induce oxidative stress which has an important role in brain damage in rats.  相似文献

Over 90% of craniopharyngeal brain tumors are cystic, which enables the injection of beta emitters such as phosphorus-32 (32P) radio-colloid into cysts for their treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and theoretical modelling of Bremsstrahlung radiation dose resulting from stereotactic radio-colloid therapy of cystic craniopharyngioma tumors with 32P. 32P radio-colloid with appropriate activity concentration was injected to a head phantom, and then the Bremsstrahlung radiation spectrum and planar images were obtained using a gamma camera. Both phantom and gamma camera were simulated using MCNPX code, and the results were compared with practical results. Bremsstrahlung radiation spectrum was measured using a handheld gamma spectrometer for two patients treated with stereotactic radio-colloid therapy with 32P in different positions and compared to Monte Carlo simulation. Results of counting and determining sensitivity coefficients in the air and the attenuating environment were obtained. Also, comparing the counting sensitivity from practical and simulation methods indicated the agreement of the data between the two methods. Comparison of the spectra from different positions around patient’s head indicated the ability to use this detector to quantify the activity in the operating room. Selection of the spectrum is important in Bremsstrahlung radiation imaging. We can take advantage of spectrometry measurement using gamma camera, handheld gamma spectrometer for patient, and theoretical modeling with Monte Carlo code to evaluate radiopharmaceutical distribution, leakage, as well as estimate activity and predict therapeutic effects in other adjacent structures and ultimately optimize radio-colloid therapy in cystic craniopharyngeal patients.  相似文献

In this paper, we apply a tightly binding Hamiltonian model in the presence of a magnetic field for investigating the electronic and transport properties of γ-graphyne layers. We also consider the effects of in-plane biaxial strain on the electronic behavior of γ-graphyne layers. Moreover the impact of strain on magnetic susceptibility and specific heat of the structure is also studied. In particular, the temperature dependence of static thermal conductivity of γ-graphyne layers due to magnetic field and strain effects is studied. We exploit the linear response theory and Green''s function approach to obtain the temperature behavior of thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient. Our numerical results indicate that thermal conductivity increases upon increasing temperature temperatures. This effect comes from the increasing thermal energy of charge carriers and their excitation to the conduction bands. The temperature dependence of Seebeck coefficient shows that the thermopower of an undoped γ-graphyne layer is positive on the whole range of temperatures in the absence of strain effects. The effects of both electron doping and magnetic field factors on temperature behavior of the electrical conductivity of γ-graphyne are investigated in detail. Moreover the effects of biaxial strain on thermal conductivity of single layer γ-graphyne have been addressed.
