Understanding Social Media: Opportunities for Cardiovascular Medicine

Cardiology professionals have used social media platforms such as Twitter to gain exposure to new research, network with experts, share opinions, and engage in scientific debates. The power of social media to communicate openly, with wide-reaching access worldwide, and at a rate faster than ever before makes it a formidable force and voice. However, evolving individual and institutional use has resulted in uncertainty for all parties on how to optimally advance this newer digital frontier. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to: 1) introduce the basics of social media usage (with the focus on Twitter); 2) provide perspective on best social media practices in academic and clinical cardiovascular medicine; and 3) present a vision for social media and the future of cardiovascular medicine.     

Disability symptoms and the price of self-sufficiency

OBJECTIVE: Disability symptoms are tiredness, slowness, and pain doing daily tasks made difficult by health. The authors study factors that increase and decrease disability symptoms, especially effects of equipment and personal assistance. METHOD: In National Health Interview Survey Disability Supplement Phase 2, people with personal care and household management disabilities were asked about fatigue, taking a long time, and pain when doing tasks on their own and with assistance. The authors study persons ages 55 and older. RESULTS: Poor overall health or disability and severe disability in tasks increase disability symptom chances by 11% to 18%. Assistance users are 19% to 20% less likely to have symptoms than nonusers. Personal help, alone, or with equipment, relieves symptoms better than equipment only, by 9% to 13%. DISCUSSION: Equipment-only users are self-sufficient, a highly prized situation. Because they actively engage in tasks, symptoms are still likely. This trade-off of psychological gain with comfort loss may be preferable to personal help.     

Novel Mannich ketones of oxazolidinones as antibacterial agents

A few Mannich ketones of piperazinyl oxazolidinone derivatives have been synthesized and their antibacterial activity in various Gram-positive organisms such as Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Enterococcus faecalis were evaluated by MIC determination. Compound 12 showed comparable activity (MIC) to linezolid and superior to eperezolid.     

Disseminated Acanthamoeba infection in a human immunodeficiency virus-infected infant

Infection with Acanthamoeba is difficult to diagnose and treat. We present the first case of disseminated Acanthamoeba infection in an HIV-infected infant. The infant survived 2 years with treatment with several agents having anti-Acanthamoeba activity in vitro.
