Summary The contribution of the maculo-ocular reflex to gaze stability was studied in 10 pigmented rabbits by rolling the animals at various angles of sagittal inclination of the rotation and/or longitudinal animal axes. At low frequencies (0.005–0.01 Hz) of sinusoidal stimulation the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) was due to macular activation, while at intermediate and high frequencies it was mainly due to ampullar activation. The following results were obtained: 1) maculo-ocular reflex gain decreased as a function of the cosine of the angle between the rotation axis and the earth's horizontal plane. No change in gain was observed when longitudinal animal axis alone was inclined. 2) At 0° of rotation axis and with the animal's longitudinal axis inclination also set at 0°, the maculo-ocular reflex was oriented about 20° forward and upward with respect to the earth's vertical axis. This orientation remained constant with sagittal inclinations of the rotation and/or longitudinal animal axes ranging from approximately 5° upward to 30° downward. When the longitudinal animal axis was inclined beyond these limits, the eye trajectory tended to follow the axis inclination. In the upside down position, the maculo-ocular reflex was anticompensatory, oblique and fixed with respect to orbital coordinates. 3) Ampullo-ocular reflex gain did not change with inclinations of the rotation and/or longitudinal animal axes. The ocular responses were consistently oriented to the stimulus plane. At intermediate frequencies the eye movement trajectory was elliptic because of directional differences between the ampullo- and maculo-ocular reflexes. 4) In the upright position the coactivation of the optokinetic reflex (OKR) eliminated the eye disalignment with respect to the stimulus plane and the elliptic trajectory. 5) Combined vertical OKR and VOR gain in the prone position (VOKR + VVOR 0°) was higher than that of the combined VOKR + VVOR in the 90° nose up position. The VVOR + VOKR 90° gain was in turn higher than the VVOR + VOKR gain in the 180° upside down position. 6) We suggest that, in the dark, the maculo-ocular response tends to reduce the disalignment of both eyes with respect to the horizon rather than inducing oculocompensatory responses. In the light, this maculo-ocular reflex increases the gain of combined optokinetic and vestibular responses.  相似文献

The influence of visual experience deprivation on changes in synaptic plasticity during postnatal development was studied in the ventral part of the rat medial vestibular nuclei (vMVN). We analysed the differences in the occurrence, expressed as a percentage, of long-term depression (LTD) and long-term potentiation (LTP) induced by high frequency stimulation (HFS) of the primary vestibular afferents in rats reared in the light (LR) and those in the dark (DR). In LR rats, HFS only induced LTD in the early stages of development, but the occurrence of LTD progressively decreased to zero before their eyes opened, while that of LTP enhanced from zero to about 50%. Once the rats' eyes had opened, LTD was no longer inducible while LTP occurrence gradually reached the normal adult value (70%). In DR rats, a similar shift from LTD to LTP was observed before their eyes opened, showing only a slightly slower LTD decay and LTP growth, and the LTD annulment was delayed by 1 day. By contrast, the time courses of LTD and LTP development in DR and LR rats showed remarkable differences following eye opening. In fact, LTD occurrence increased to about 50% in a short period of time and remained high until the adult stage. In addition, the occurrence of LTP slowly decreased to less than 20%. The effect of light-deprivation was reversible, since the exposure of DR rats to light, 5 days after eye opening, caused a sudden disappearance of LTD and a partial recover of LTP occurrence. In addition, we observed that a week of light deprivation in LR adult rats did not affect the normal adult LTP occurrence. These results provide evidence that in a critical period of development visual input plays a crucial role in shaping synaptic plasticity of the vMVN, and suggest that the visual guided shift from LTD to LTP during development may be necessary to refine and consolidate vestibular circuitry.  相似文献

Birth defect-related demise is mainly due to congenital heart defects. In the earlier stage of pregnancy, fetus problem can be identified by finding information about the fetus to avoid stillbirths. The gold standard used to monitor the health status of the fetus is by Cardiotachography(CTG), cannot be used for long durations and continuous monitoring. There is a need for continuous and long duration monitoring of fetal ECG signals to study the progressive health status of the fetus using portable devices. The non-invasive method of electrocardiogram recording is one of the best method used to diagnose fetal cardiac problem rather than the invasive methods.The monitoring of the fECG requires development of a miniaturized hardware and a efficient signal processing algorithms to extract the fECG embedded in the mother ECG. The paper discusses a prototype hardware developed to monitor and record the raw mother ECG signal containing the fECG and a signal processing algorithm to extract the fetal Electro Cardiogram signal. We have proposed two methods of signal processing, first is based on the Least Mean Square (LMS) Adaptive Noise Cancellation technique and the other method is based on the Wavelet Transformation technique. A prototype hardware was designed and developed to acquire the raw ECG signal containing the mother and fetal ECG and the signal processing techniques were used to eliminate the noises and extract the fetal ECG and the fetal Heart Rate Variability was studied. Both the methods were evaluated with the signal acquired from a fetal ECG simulator, from the Physionet database and that acquired from the subject. Both the methods are evaluated by finding heart rate and its variability, amplitude spectrum and mean value of extracted fetal ECG. Also the accuracy, sensitivity and positive predictive value are also determined for fetal QRS detection technique. In this paper adaptive filtering technique uses Sign-sign LMS algorithm and wavelet techniques with Daubechies wavelet, employed along with de noising techniques for the extraction of fetal Electrocardiogram.Both the methods are having good sensitivity and accuracy. In adaptive method the sensitivity is 96.83, accuracy 89.87, wavelet sensitivity is 95.97 and accuracy is 88.5. Additionally, time domain parameters from the plot of heart rate variability of mother and fetus are analyzed.  相似文献

Acute exacerbations of asthma are very common reasons for a presentation to emergency departments. This paper focuses on defining the high‐risk group, consideration of the concept of phenotypes of acute asthma, the assessment of severe and life‐threatening exacerbations and an emphasis on the management of the more severe end of the exacerbation severity. A number of evidence‐based guidelines exist throughout the world and are all slightly different. This reflects the poor evidence base for some of those recommendations. Thus, a large variation of treatment drugs, doses and regimen are used and clearly not standardised. This paper aims to present a summary of the best evidence and discuss some of these controversies. The most important aspect of treating an exacerbation of acute asthma is to review regularly and assess response to treatment. Severe and life‐threatening episodes should be treated with early use of intravenous treatment in a stepwise manner following the local guidelines. Non‐invasive ventilation and high flow nasal cannulae delivery of oxygen in the emergency department are evolving modalities, but evidence for their use is currently limited.  相似文献

METHOD : It is possible to induce increased fetal resorption in a number of inbred murine matings by injecting Poly (I) Poly (C12U) 3.5 days postconception, a maneuver associated with natural killer-mediated damage to the feto placental unit such as occurs in spontaneous fetal resorptions. RESULTS : We show here that alloimmunization can block this effect. In addition, maternal immune responses induced by alloimmunization against isolated mutant class I or class II, as well as by immunization with class I MHC alloantigens (Kd) transfected L cells are sufficient to restore normal fetal viability. It is not necessary that the maternal immune response be specifically directed against paternal alloantigens fr the fetal protecton to ensue, since the effect occurs in inbred matings when the mother is immunized against unrelated class I or class II alloantigens. As in previous studies conducted in the murine species, not all MHC alloimmunizations are protective. In addition, as control, immunization with a monomorphic class I MHC molecular (37), transfected L cells, sheep red blood cells or hen egg lysozyme is without effect. CONCLUSION : These results indicate that defined MHC antigens can mediate fetal protection from induced fetal resorption, and suggest that one driving force in promoting MHC antigen polymorphism in mammals is their capacity to confer protection from NK mediated fetal demise.  相似文献

We analyzed in rabbits the relationships between the temporooccipital nystagmogenic cortex (NGC)—the region sited at the border between cortical areas 17, 21, and 22—and the nucleus of the optic tract (NOT). Two experimental approaches were used: (a) eye movement analysis before and after electrolytic lesion of the NOT region provided an indication of the importance of the NOT for the interaction between the ocular nystagmus elicited by natural optokinetic stimulation (OKN) and the nystagmus evoked by electrical stimulation of the nystagmogenic area; (b) NOT direction-selective and velocity-sensitive units were tested with single shock or repetitive electrical stimulation of the nystagmogenic region. Single-shock stimulation evoked single or multiple spikes in 50% of NOT units analyzed and repetitive stimuli induced prolonged facilitation and inhibitory rebounds in 70% of the units tested. Comparison of orthodromic activation latencies of the NOT cells (3.2 and 6.1 ms) after cortical stimulation and of antidromic activation latencies of cortical nystagmogenic units (2.6 ms) after NOT shocks, suggested monosynaptic as well as polysynaptic connections between the temporooccipital cortex and the NOT. The existence of such cortical-NOT linkage indicates that the NOT is intercalated between the cortex and the oculomotor centers and represents the most probable site of interaction of the cortical nystagmus pathway with the optokinetic reflex arc.  相似文献

To elucidate some of the brain stem mechanisms involved in tongue motility, extracellular microelectrode recordings were made from single neurons in the region of the hypoglossal nucleus in 10 decerebrate and 23 anesthetized (chloralose) adult cats. The antidromic response characteristics and the synaptically evoked responses of 71 motoneurons that supplied tongue protrusive (P) or retrusive (R) muscles were documented. Protrusive motoneurons could be synaptically excited by temporomandibular joint (TMJ), glossopharyngeal (IX), and/or superior laryngeal (SLN) nerve stimuli, whereas R motoneurons could be activated by lingual and/or IX nerve stimulation. Conditioning effects revealed that the inhibition of the antidromic responses was shorter in duration than the inhibitory effects noted when synaptically evoked responses were conditioned. Conditioning stimuli delivered to the lingual, TMJ, IX, and SLN nerves were most effective in inhibiting the synaptically evoked responses of P and R motoneurons for conditioning-test intervals of as much as 400 ms. Those conditioning stimuli which also could synaptically activate a motoneuron tended to facilitate the cell's synaptically evoked responses at conditioning-test intervals of about 10 ms, whereas conditioning stimuli which did not synaptically activate the cell resulted in only the long-lasting inhibition.  相似文献
