Effects of Stimulus Intensity on Cardiovascular Activity 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A between-groups design (N = 75) was employed to investigate the effects of stimulus intensity and repetition on cardiovascular activity. It was predicted that as intensity increased, the pattern of physiological activity would change, indicating a transition from the orienting to the defense reflex. Cardiovascular activity was represented by measures of heart rate, digital pulse amplitude, and cephalic blood content. Subjects received 12 presentations of a 1000 Hz tone of 45, 60, 75, 90, or 105 dB. Stimulus risetime was 30 msec and the duration 2 sec. Analyses of variance revealed reliable effects of intensity and repetition on all cardiovascular variables. However, neither these results nor additional multivariate analyses supported the differentiation of orienting and defense reflexes as suggested by Sokolov (1963) or Graham (1979). The importance of the startle reflex in the interpretation of these findings was discussed. 相似文献

Summary Electrical stimulation of the substantia nigra of rats elicits a burst of small amplitude waves with a latency of 4–6 ms that may last for 10–15 ms throughout much of the neostriatum. Frontal cortex stimulation also elicits a burst response, which can occlude the substantia nigra response. The substantia nigra evoked burst response was still present after chronic neocortical ablation or thalamic transection or both treatments combined. The response corresponds to the first sharp negative wave of the substantia nigra evoked neostriatal field potential. Single substantia nigra evoked action potentials were recorded in neostriatum with a mean latency of 9.8 ms, ranging from 4–22 ms. These action potentials were considered to be antidromic because 1) they were occluded during appropriate collision intervals by orthodromic action potentials elicited by frontal cortex stimulation. Subthreshold frontal cortex conditioning stimulation did not alter the threshold for activation from substantia nigra. The refractory period for the axon was at least as long as that for the soma and ranged between 0.8–2.0 ms. The antidromic responses failed to follow low frequency stimulation (< 40 Hz for 3000 ms). This failure occurred in the axon between substantia nigra and globus pallidus. The burst response and first sharp negative wave of the field potential probably represent the antidromic activation of the ubiquitous and densely packed medium spiny neostriatal projection neurons. These responses 1) occur at the same latency, 2) respond in the same manner to twin pulse and repetitive stimulation and 3) are occluded by frontal cortex stimulation in the same manner as antidromic action potentials. 相似文献

Waveform patterns evoked by 4 intensities of flash in normal subjects were studied in relation to intersubject variability. Time-frequency distribution curves of all peaks occurring between 11 and 280 msec after flash onset and meeting minimal criteria were obtained from 46 males. These distributions closely corresponded to similar data reported by others for single intensity stimulation. An algorithm was developed which identified in 67 to 100% of instances a single “peak event’ within the time ranges of each of 6 peak distributions. Many peak events appeared and disappeared within the 4 intensity sets of individuals. Latencies were obtained for these peak events. Application of the algorithm to a replicate sample of 29 Ss, which included 8 females, indicated generalizability. Test-retest data on 15 Ss showed its reliability. The data suggest that methodology significantly contributes to the variability of peak identification among subjects. This may be reduced by employing multiple intensities of stimulation. 相似文献

Human cancer is an unpredictable disease as is its response to therapy. The intrinsic genetic heterogeneity and instability
of cancer cells could in part explain such behavior. However, it is possible that, individual variation in the genetic make-up
of humans may affect the relationship between host and cancer cells and, therefore, be, at least in part responsible for this
extraordinary variation. Human gene polymorphism has been shown indeed to play a role in immune responses; among the immune-related
genes, cytokines are often polymorphic. Some polymorphisms of cytokine and cytokine receptor may have direct functional significance
by altering directly and indirectly the level of gene expression and/or its function; other may only demarcate a genetic linkage
to a particular haplotype associated with a given clinical condition. The majority of polymorphisms found in cytokines or
their receptors are located in the promoter, intronic and 3′ untranslated regions. These sequence variations can still affect
gene expression and function. In this review will we summarize the current knowledge about the role of cytokine polymorphism

Summary The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of knit structure in underwear on thermoregulatory responses. Underwear manufactured from 100% polypropylene fibres in five different knit structures (1-by-1 rib, fleece, fishnet, interlock, double-layer rib) was evaluated. All five underwear prototypes were tested as part of a prototype clothing system. Measured on a thermal manikin these clothing systems had total thermal resistances of 0.243, 0.268, 0.256, 0.248 and 0.250 m2 · K · W–1, respectively (including a value for the thermal resistance of the ambient environment of 0.104 m2 · K · W–1). Human testing was done on eight male subjects and took place at ambient temperature (T

Skin wettedness was calculated. The differences in knit structure of the underwear in the clothing systems resulted in significant differences in mean skin temperature, local and average skin wettedness, non-evaporated and evaporated sweat during the course of the intermittent exercise test. Patients with chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC) succumb to persistent infections with the opportunistic yeast Candida. Impaired cell-mediated responses to Candida have been repeatedly reported while antibody responses were mostly found to be normal. The underlying defect remains poorly understood. It has recently been shown that CMC patients are also susceptible to infections with encapsulated bacteria, and may have associated IgG2 and IgG4 deficiency. Our previous studies demonstrated altered cytokine production in CMC patients. As cytokines can influence production and isotype of specific antibody, in 10 patients with CMC we measured the levels and isotype distributions of serum antibodies to Candida antigens (CAg), pneumococcal polysaccharide (PPS) and tetanus toxoid (TT) antigens. Peripheral blood lymphocytes were also stimulated in culture and the antibodies made in vitro were measured. Our data demonstrated that in vivo, CMC patients had very high levels of IgG and IgA CAg-specific antibodies. CAg-specific and PPS-specific IgG1 was markedly higher than in controls. Children but not adults with CMC had significantly lower levels of IgG2-specific antibody to CAg and PPS compared with age-matched controls. Patients had significantly higher levels of IgG3-specific antibody to all three antigens tested. These findings were in accordance with increased total IgG and IgG3 levels seen in CMC patients. In vitro, CMC patients, particularly children, did not respond as frequently to antigen stimulation as did their healthy controls. The level of specific antibody produced was also lower to all antigens tested, as was the amount of total immunoglobulins following antigenic and particularly mitogenic stimulation. Addition of interferon-alpha (IFN-α) or IFN-γ to cultures had variable, sometimes marked, effects. Our results demonstrate that CMC patients manifest subtle alterations in specific antibody responses to CAg, PPS and TT, which are most pronounced in children. Introduction: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease characterized by autoantibodies production and immune complex deposition with systemic clinical manifestations. Interleukin (IL)-17-producing cells play a crucial role in disease pathogenesis and represent an attractive therapeutic target.
Areas covered: This review provides an update on the possibility of targeting IL-17 in SLE. The rational for this approach as well as currently available and future targets are discussed.
Expert opinion: Although human expression studies and animal models indicate that IL-17 blocking may be a promising therapeutic strategy for SLE, direct evidence for IL-17 inhibition in SLE patients is unavailable. Biologic therapies and small-molecule drugs that target IL-17 production are required for the achievement of a favorable clinical effect in SLE patients. 相似文献

CD1d-restricted NKT cells are a novel T cell lineage with unusual features. They co-express some NK cell receptors and recognize glycolipid antigens through an invariant T cell receptor (TCR) in the context of CD1d molecules. Upon activation through the TCR, NKT cells produce large amounts of IFN-gamma and IL-4. It has been proposed that rapid cytokine output by activated NKT cells may induce bystander activation of other lymphoid lineages. The impact of CD1d-restricted NKT cell activation in the induction of B cell-mediated immune responses to infection is still unclear. We show here that CD1-restricted NKT cells contribute to malarial splenomegaly associated with expansion of the splenic B cell pool and enhance parasite-specific antibody formation in response to Plasmodium berghei infection. The increased B cell-mediated response correlates with the ability of NKT cells to promote Th2 immune responses. Additionally, antibody responses against the glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored protein merozoite surface protein 1 (MSP-1) were found to be significantly lower in CD1(-/-) mice compared to wild-type animals. P. berghei-infected MHC class II (MHCII)(-/-) mice also generated antibodies against MSP-1, suggesting that antibody production against GPI-anchored antigens in response to malaria infection can arise from both MHCII-dependent and independent pathways. 相似文献
